I have been greatly blessed by this sermon. It has confirmed so much of what God has been showing me in His Word for at least the past five years concerning covenantal theology. I NEVER initially set out to learn these things. In fact I tried to avoid anything "covenantal" for most of my life, until the Lord providentially led me into this journey when I began writing ...."Christ Rescued the Thief's Testimony from the "Church of Christ." Since its publication, I continue to learn and teach Baptist Covenantal Theology, by first laying out how it pertained to the penitent thief on the cross, and how every false religion gets his testimony of salvation wrong, all because they do not understand covenantal theology, the absolute sovereignty of God and His glorious distinguishing grace.

Genuine question. Most dispensationalists I know will vehemently deny the kingship of Christ and claim that modern, ethnic Israel worships the God of the Old Testament while denying Jesus. Can we rightly say that those beliefs are compatible with the faith once for all handed down to all the saints? How can those things come from the brethren?
@Notworthy72
@Notworthy72 4 ай бұрын
I don’t see how that is compatible with the scriptures. I have the same questions and issues. According to the Bible if you deny the Son you do not have the Father. And the apostles confirmed the kingship of Christ in their ministries and writings. Makes no sense.

Does anyone have any good resoueces for understanding the differences between the Reformed Baptist perspective and the Presbyterian perspective on the Covenant of Works and the Covenant of Grace?

I don't know of an all in one resource but I have some recommendations if you are interested in a deeper dive. First is Sam Renihan's book "The Mystery of Christ: His Covenant & His Kingdom" which is supposed to be the gold standard for Baptist covenant theology. On the Presbyterian side is O. Palmer Robertson's "The Christ of the Covenants", which is probably the Presby gold standard. In addition to that is Richard Belcher's "The Fulfillment of the Promises of God: An Explanation of Covenant Theology. A fantastic read on who/what is Israel is O. Palmer Robertson's "The Israel of God: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow", which is lauded by both camps. I have only delved into "The Israel of God" so far and it's awesome. This is a topic that takes some time investment, as I soon found out when trying to figure out where I land. So far, I'm still undecided, though I would lean more Baptistic since I can't really see paedo baptism in the Word of God.

@@jamieadam575 similar conception of covenant of works (generally, there’s not exact uniformity on some of it because it gets so technical even amongst RB or Westminster camps), but Pascal Denaults book contrasts the view put forth in this video with Westminster federalism. I recommend just reading Berkhof’s section on covenant of redemption and grace in his “Manual of Christian Doctrine” (free online). It’s concise but does a good job of laying out the general Westminster view

21:40 presents a false dilemma/dichotomy. This presents a choice between a god that cannot save all vs a god that effectively saves only the few he chose. Neither of these cases are biblical, and are dangerously in error. God, in his love for his creation, provided a way of salvation yo anyone who believes on him and repents of their sin. This is 100% free and cannot be earned. The gift, however, can be rejected. Thereby leaving those who reject the offer of salvation guilty and accountable for their sins before the living God. No one was elected before the foundation of the world as a winner of a divine lottery. It is also a misrepresentation that all reformers and church fathers were Calvinists. That is wildly false. Calvinism is a highly flawed theology and should be discarded.

On another note, I have experienced the same thing but in reverse, having grown up in a dispensational church and having attended a dispensational bible school. Name calling and meanness has no place in this conversation, rather what the Bible says should be central (as I know you would agree!) I believe this gentleman did a fine job of that in this video. There is no Covenant with Adam only a command

@@jayhill3320Interesting! Do you understand that as the covenant of works?
@jayhill3320
@jayhill3320 4 ай бұрын
@@hardboard82 Not that verse alone but I believe it does elude to it. To be fair, Genesis does not use the word "covenant" with Adam in the garden. However covenant language is present in the commands that God gives Adam as well as one prohibition(in the day you eat..you will die). If Adam, as our federal head, would have obeyed then he would have earned righteousness for all his posterity. Instead he disobeys and his sin, guilt and shame is counted to all his posterity(Us). So he fails in the covenants of works. Romans 5:19 says, "For by the one man's(Adam) disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's(Jesus) obedience the many will be made righteous." So what Adam could not do, Christ did. Where Adam failed, Christ, as the last Adam prevails. So Christ accomplishes the covenant of works in the covenant of grace. Christ obeys in believer's stead and earns righteousness for them. So by grace alone through faith alone, Christ's righteousness is counted to us as a gift. Thats a quick explanation. God bless

@@jayhill3320 Thank you for the response! I’m tracking with 95% of what you said and am in agreement with that understanding. I’m still trying to grasp the concepts within covenant theology and I’d been lacking that verse from Hosea previously. Two quick clarifications if you don’t mind: 1) When you say “Not that verse alone but I believe it does elude to it,” are you basically just saying that Hosea 6:7 is a reference to the “covenant of works” although it doesn’t use such a title for that covenant? And by “not that verse alone,” you just mean to say that there is lots of other evidence pointing to a covenant of works being established in Genesis (as well as other references perhaps)? 2) Almost everything you said was clear but I don’t know if I fully understand what you mean when you say “So Christ accomplishes the covenant of works in the covenant of grace.” Could you explain what you mean there? Are you just referencing Christ’s active/passive obedience and federal headship such that in him we might receive the blessings of the covenant of works which he kept? Thank you!
@jayhill3320
@jayhill3320 4 ай бұрын
@@hardboard82 Yes to both of your questions. So Christ accomplishing the covenant of works in the covenant of grace is Him obeying in the place of undeserving rebel sinners in His life and then satisfying the curse of the law in their place in His death. So to put it more simply, Christ does for rebel sinners what they could not and would not do(Grace) solely because He works all things after the counsel of His will to the praise of His glorious grace.
