A Polyglot Diary

4 жыл бұрын

This winter I had a trip to some Caucasian countries, the first of which was Azerbaijan. Apart from the most typical touristic attractions I also visited a small mountainous village called LAHIC, which is very famous for its handicrafts and is usually visited by tourists in the summer. What I got to know then is that in this village they speak a different language from the rest of the country. This language is called TAT.
The Tat language is a Southwestern Iranian language related to Persian. It's spoken by the Tats in Azerbaijan and Russia.
During my trip I got interested in this language and decided to make a video about it. I also interviewed a Tat speaker. So, in this video I'm going to share some shots from the trip together with some extracts of my interview.

Very interesting, as an Iranian who speaks Persian and Mazandarani (a northwestern Iranian language spoken in south coast of the Caspian Sea), I almost understand this language even heard for first time. In my opinion it could be considered as a Persian dialect and every Iranian could interact with these people and and got fascinated!

I am native tat (from both sides, dad and mom). Can understand it since my grandparents spoke it all the time. However, can not talk, because my parents always spoke only Azerbaijani to us and we had school, education, everything in Azerbaijani. Even thought technically Tat is supposed to be my mother-tongue, in reality, it is not. My mother-tongue is Azerbaijani. Even my English and my russian is way better than my Tat language skills. Which is a shame, of course. And obviously, my kids in the future won't even understand Tat. So that's how Tat language is dying.

I am from center of Iran and I had no Idea that our local version of persian is a dialect of tati language , sometimes called pahlavi or middle persian , tat people are living in north, center, and east of Iran as well ,and their dreses specially women clothing is still same ! Some verbs have find their way to farsi spoken by isfahani ,iraki and khorasany people! Where I can learn more about this beautiful language? And you are right in some areas tats call themselves persian or fars , in east some call themselves tajik as well, some even say both tat and tajik are the words that turks called persian speakers in iran so at the end tajik, tat , persian and fars is one,I wish more studies would be done on this subject

Hello dear ! 🙂 Thank you for your interst about Lahic, our nation and our Tati language. İ want to correct a mistake. There is not a group of Tats that named "armenian Tat". There were grigorian christian Tats. They are named "armenian Tats" at the time of enumeration in 20th century. But this is not true name. Tats and armenians are different nations. Also one mistake is "Tat" toponym's history. İts not turkish word. This hypothesis is not true. This hypothesis installed by pan-turkists racists against Tat people. Because there is "turan-iran" (panturkists racist against İranian peoples) proplem in this geography Azerbaijan. Tat people are strongly assimilatied by Azerbaijanian "turks".
