How to use the apostrophe S in English.
Where do I put the apostrophe?
When do I put apostrophe S and when just an apostrophe?
In this English grammar lesson we look at when to use the apostrophe S and when to only use an apostrophe.
We start by looking at the three meanings of Apostrophe S at the end of a word. Then we start focusing on Possessive Nouns which is a word ending in apostrophe S which is then followed by a noun.
We look at the following rules:
✅ Singular nouns NOT ending in S
✅ Plural nouns ending in S
✅ Plural nouns that do not in S
✅ Singular nouns ending in S
✅ Names of people that end in S
✅ Apostrophes with two or more people
✅ No noun after apostrophe S
✅ Apostrophe S with periods of time
✅ Decades / Years - No apostrophe
✅ Plural forms of Acronyms
Apostrophe S is also know as the Genitive Case or Possessive Case.
It is important to learn these written English grammar rules if you are taking an International English exam such as IELTS or TOEFL.
Practice these Apostrophe S grammar rules with these exercises:

Why in the singular sentence you said ( where are the dogs bones) you didn’t said ( where is the dogs bones) And in the plural sentence you also said ( where are... ) you didn’t said ( where is..)
@WoodwardEnglish
@WoodwardEnglish 5 жыл бұрын
Because we are talking about bones (plural) Where are the dog's bones? = Where are the bones? = Where are they? THEY refers to the bones. The possessive noun (dog's) just tell us who or what owns the bones. We are not asking where the dog is, we are asking where the bones are. I hope that helps.

@@WoodwardEnglish Thank you. I guess my main question is regarding the pronunciation. Growing up, for my friend Phipps (Phelps in my book/audiobook I'm working on), we would always say it simply as "Phelps' house" without even pronouncing the second S. Do you think it's permissible to follow the classical/religious rule when it comes to modern last names like Phelps or Strauss, i.e. omitting the second S in both written and spoken form? It's always just sounded more natural to me that way
