Apothecary Cabinet For Screws and Shop Organization

Everyone has those cheap little plastic drawer things and I gotta tell you... They are the worst. I've had the same little organizer for years and it gives me no joy. I finally got around to upgrading. I like the Apothecary drawer concept because I need everything labeled. I also like that I can take each drawer out and bring it with me -- to the project. I'm very pleased with how it turned out!

I see it's been a while since you posted this and I"m hoping you're still reading the comments. This project is exactly what I need in my small shop to sort out my kazillion screws, nuts and bolts that as of now are just loosely thrown into a couple of coffee cans. My question is: where did you get those dividing calipers that you used to mark out the drawer sizing? I really need one of those as my math is almost nonexistent. Thanks so much for this great post. You have truly inspired me to get busy in the shop once again!!!

@@bobbyt9999 Fabtastic! Thank you for sharing this feedback. I’m energized that you are inspired to get back into the shop! Those gauges are really handy. I found out (later) that they are typically used in sewing to line up buttons on a shirt. You can find them around $10 on Amazon if you search for “expanding sewing gauge” or sometimes called a “button gauge”. See you in the shop!!! 🙏

@@ckngmad1357 oh, good eye! That’s a Dewalt fold out table. It’s great. It has dog holes and clamping holes so you can slide an f-style clamp through the middle to clamp pieces down. Home Depot calls this product “DEWALT 33 in. H Plastic Folding Portable Sawhorse Workbench”. I use it all the time for a quick popup workspace.

What ended up being your outside dimension of the whole cabinet? Looks great and also hello from a fellow Minnesotan.

The outside dimensions are 18” wide and top-to-bottom outside measurement is 24.5”. I used 1/2” Baltic birch, which is really 7/16” if we’re splitting hairs. Each box from the face is 3.5” tall x 3 7/8” wide. I chose the cabinet dimensions because I wanted it to be a perfect fit in between the face frame of the cabinet I was using.

@@TenThousandMakes right there with you. I enjoy 3D Printing so it would be interesting to combine your style of drawers with custom dividers or holders. The plastic ones I also underestimated how much saw dust gets in them

Nice work. I never graduated to the Dado Stack. I still either do multiple passes on table saw or I do one pass on the router table. I find it much faster on router table to use a 1/4 or 1/2 straight bit. For bigger than a half or an 1/8 I use the table saw. My advice to others is only use new or quality bits on router for Dados. I’ve used old cheap ones and it burns bad unless you make several shallow passes at which point you might as well use table saw.
