The latest revelations about a private IT company building malware for Russian intelligence services have again put cyber security in the spotlight. In Ukraine, the Kremlin's war rages on thanks also to cyber-attacks on local infrastructure. Meanwhile, tensions between the US and China are increasing over the question of whether TikTok poses a threat to American national security. Critics say the video sharing app is collecting way more information than it needs to, while its makers face the requirement of handing over user data to the Chinese government. The latest news surrounding China's Pinduduo shopping app has cyber security experts concerned as well.

Well. Opera browser is located and operated in Norway but is chinese owned. And it's a spyware. Perhaps ownership should be displayed. And warnings when its owned by autoritarian regimes. Also, the education system should tell children that apps are dangerous

@cykkm
@cykkm Жыл бұрын
@@flyinghorse1878 “How can I verify that Opera is Chinese-owned?” - Since Opera Ltd is a public corp traded at NASDAQ (as OPRA), all financial and other investment-impacting disclosures are filed with the US SEC, and are public and very detailed. The form you're looking for a foreign public corp is the Annual Report Form 20-F (in general, it may also be the Form 40-F, but Opera Ltd has indicated that it is required to file, and has in fact been been filing the report 20-F), and possible later amendments during the year, Form 20-F/A, triggered by special events. In particular, the latest to date amended Form 20-F/A has been filed on 2022-06-28. The Potential Risk Disclosures section, which must be written in plain language accessible to the public shareholder, contains a section (p.26) which confirms it, with additional details: BEGIN QUOTE *Kunlun, our parent company, and Mr. Yahui Zhou, our chairman of the board and chief executive officer, have control over our company and their interests may not be aligned with the interests of our other shareholders.* As of the date of this annual report, Kunlun Tech Co., Ltd., or Kunlun, previously named Beijing Kunlun Tech Co., Ltd., a Chinese public company traded on the Shenzhen stock exchange, indirectly owns 55.60% of our issued and outstanding ordinary shares. As such, we are a consolidated subsidiary of Kunlun. In addition, Mr. Yahui Zhou, our chairman of the board and chief executive officer, indirectly owns an additional 8.47% of our shares and is also a significant Kunlun shareholder, controlling 27.93% of Kunlun’s voting rights and serving on its board of directors. With his own holdings, as well as those of Kunlun, Mr. Yahui Zhou then may be in a position to effectively control 64.07% of our voting power. As a result of the foregoing, Kunlun and Mr. Yahui Zhou have the ability to control or exert significant influence over important corporate matters and investors may be prevented from affecting important corporate matters involving our company that require approval of shareholders, including: ● the composition of our board of directors and, through it, any determinations with respect to our operations, business direction and policies, including the appointment and removal of officers; ● any determinations with respect to mergers or other business combinations; ● our disposition of substantially all of our assets; and ● any change in control. These actions may be taken even if they are opposed by our other shareholders, including the holders of the ADSs [American Depositary Shares, i.e. the company stock units traded at NASDAQ. -Cy]. Furthermore, this concentration of ownership may also discourage, delay or prevent a change in control of our company, which could have the dual effect of depriving our shareholders of an opportunity to receive a premium for their shares as part of a sale of our company and reducing the price of the ADSs. As a result of the foregoing, the value of your investment could be materially reduced. In addition, the significant concentration of share ownership may adversely affect the trading price of the ADSs due to investors’ perception that conflicts of interest may exist or arise. For more information regarding our principal shareholders and their affiliated entities, see “Item 6. Directors, Senior Management and Employees-E. Share Ownership.” We have in the past, and likely will continue to enter into related party transactions involving entities directly or indirectly controlled by Kunlun or Mr. Zhou. See “Item 7. Major Shareholders and Related Party Transactions - B. Related Party Transactions” for details. Such related party transactions, while reviewed and approved by our Board’s Audit Committee consisting solely of independent Directors, may indirectly benefit Kunlun or Mr. Zhou personally, by virtue of their interest in the related party. END QUOTE

lol the DW journalist is out of line saying that China BACKED the Ukraine war. Pure nonsense. It stays neutral on Russia's sovereign decision to protect the country. China was not the only one that understood Russia's dilemma but didn't condone its solution. It was among 147 countries that didn't support the sanction levied by the US and the EU. China didn't support the war action and has sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine which only a handful of reporters mentioned over the past months. China and India took advantage of cheap oil offered by the Russians, so why not. It helps to boost their economies. Check your facts before asking him to host a show about China and the Ukraine war. btw China and Russia have fought 80 wars between them over centuries. This guest also didn't understand that the Chinese gov't doesn't exert control over the Tiktok platform for it is set up OUTSIDE China. She didn't check this basic info, so not a good person to give the interview. This is a very precarious time, if the media doesn't take care in providing a fair assessment of any situation, it becomes a vehicle for the state.
