😂😂😂 This reminds me of my Grandma's old sayings. We were raised all around the world in the Airforce. I was 13 when I was introduced to the Southern ways. Grandma told me to go out yonder to the turtle hull and fetch her those taters. I looked all over that property for a Turtle hull and realized I had no clue what it was. Grandma came out and said, "Child, what's taking you so long? She walked over to the trunk of the car and popped the trunk lid. There, in all their glory, were the taters Grandma asked me to fetch. She called a Chimney, a Chimilee. She asked me to fetch her an in-velup out of the desk drawer. 😂 What she was referring to was what I called an Envelope. 😂😂😂
@JaredKingTV7 ай бұрын
Lol now the turtle hull is a new one on me BUT my Pa seen a motorcycle rider with a helmet and said "HEY BOY, WHATCHEE DOIN WITH THAT TURTLE SHELL ON YE HEAD!?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I say envelope and chimlee like she does though 😂 guess that's the mountain in me lol
@djspatriqt22905 ай бұрын
@JaredKingTV 😆 🤣 😂 That's funny. I was sittin in a local cafe where our elders always met up since the Old General Store closed down a few years back. We heard a very loud rumble of motorcycles 🏍. It was even louder than the train 🚆 that passes, many times a day, across the street. A group of men walked in with their full gear and helmets on. Those elders quickly greeted the men and kindly asked them to remove their Turtle Shells before entering next time. 🐢 🐢 🐢 Helmets do look like a turtle shell. 😆 🤣 😂

I live in East Tennessee in the Great Smoky mountains.. my grandmother always said if a bird flies in the home, death is coming. And to never wash clothes on the first or last day of a year.. it will wash someone in or out of your life. If you're ever in the room when someone dies quickly cover any mirrors, it's thought that it could keep the soul from getting trapped. Never carry out a body as a loved one who passed away in the home head first, for if they're faced to be looking inwards towards the home, they could get attached in death.. not able to cross over easily. (Make sure they're carried out feet first) Never set your purse on the floor or you will always be broke.

Dont have the front door and the back door open as it means money coming in and flying out of the house, just as quickly. If someone dies in a room, open the windows and cover the mirrors so their soul can go to heaven. If a bird flies into your home, its bad luck, if a bird flies into your window or pecks at your window its bad luck. Just a few for you. Take care, God Bless and Thanks for sharing.

Greetings, Kin Folk, from the Foothills of the Ozarks of Arkansas. Grannie raised pigs. She was also fishing all the time. She would say, Never take a pig on a boat. It’s bad luck because it was believed pigs can’t swim. For the same reason, never say “pig” on a boat. She taught me how to tell if we was gona have a bad winter. Look at the barbed wire fence in August. Birds will catch bugs, mostly grasshoppers and stab them on the barbwire tines. If all the tines were full, it was gona be a long bad winter.

My mother came from Stoneville, NC. The following superstitions came from her. If an unmarried woman lets someone sweep under her feet, she will not get married for over a year. If a woman goes visiting on New Year day, she brings a year of bad luck to those she visits. If the corn shucks are tight on the ears of corn, and the hornets nests are high in the trees, winter is going to be very bad. If you steal anything from a grave yard, someone you know and love will have to pay for your theft. Whistling girls and crowing hens always come to some bad end. If a tall thin man comes to visit on New Year day (and he has a lump of coal in a pocket) he will bring good luck to those who offer him food and drink. Any man who carries a buckeye in a pocket brings good luck to those he visits.

My Mama's People were from the Appalachians. She had gobs of these sayings. I still use them. Most of the time they're right on. Also since I can remember I get visions in my dreams. I also just get gut wrenching feelings about people & things that come true. My Granny said I had " The Gift." She said it was not witchery but a gift from God and that many times He picks Little Children to bestow it upon. I have that. Always have. Like the first one I remember was when I was just three or four. We lived next to the RR tracks & back when the passenger trains would just fly by. I woke up crying one morning & told Mama that the train hit an old man at the intersection & killed him & his eyeballs were hanging out. She said it was just a nightmare & forget about it. Within a week at best I was sound asleep one morning when I heard the train whistle,,,the brakes screeching & a crash. I bolted out of bed. My dad wS out in his shop working ,,, him & the men with him went running up there. My older brother,,, the next to youngest & a real tough guy did too but immediately came running back screaming that a neighbor man we called OLD Jack was coming home from working graveyard shift had gotten hit. It pushed his car from our intersection almost to the depot 2 blocks away and ,,, yes,,, his eyeballs were hanging out & my brother was freed totally out!!! That summer was the beginning of my knowings. It grew over the years til even Mama who'd never admitted she believed it ,,, did. As did my entire family & neighborhood. It was crazy. I'm now 67,,, I don't encourage it but it still happens. People you've passed on visit me & such as that. When I was grown & newly married my Uncle, the last of Daddys brothers passed. He always had money & was always tight with it. His siblings who were left & Mama started going thru his things. The sibs were hunting money as they were the same way & wasn't giving up. He kept PA cans in his bedroom for storage. Mama laughed at how they rummaged thru them like rats finding nothing. We'll I drove the 30 miles from my new home to Mama's. She told me what was going on. I laughed too & said I wished they'd find the one full of eggs & they'd all be rotten. Mama while around from the stove & wanted details. I told her I'd dreamed that in the corner behind old Aunt Molly's hope chest where it had always set angled there was some sort of container full of eggs. She says that's it & said when u dream eggs it means money. So after breakfast they all went back & behind the chest was a stack of PA cans from biggest to littlest each can containing money. From hundred dollars to pennies. I think it was like 13000. 00 all together which they split. That was a lot of money in 1975. Especially when you're a broke newlywed howsoever they never offered me one cent. Lol. But... because Dad was dead we got his part which we all signed over to Mom. TRUE STORY from the foothills of Oklahoma. PS... Im also at the foot of Cavaugh hill which is touted as The Highest Hill in the world only a few ft. Shy of being a mountain even though we call it our mountain. It it said to be the home of Bigfoot which the Choctaw called Sasquatch. Theyve also been sighted in the Quachitas as well as other very close areas near me. Like im looking out my window right now at Cavanaugh which is 9 miles away. Starting in the fall they give camp outs and tours. I have no need to go there. I Know They Are There.

Never sweep your feet. If you accidentally sweep your feet, you must spin on the end of the broom or have bad luck

I so love these!!! My dad always said if an old dogs to howling at night to stop him. That it knew death was coming. I wish I knew more about that. My dad would get after the dogs of they did it I do too just in case. Then for a few weeks in July you can't swim in the river no matter what or you could die. That one was proved true scientifically but how did they know? A black cat crossing your path make an x? zcan you tell us about these?

Did anybody ever hear "If you dream of the dead, you'll hear from the living - or it will rain?" I have to admit, this was has got about a 60% accuracy. Her is an odd and eerie on. That if a woman/girl fixed a meal and set a plate on the table (this was at a certain time, I believe) you'd see your future. There was a story my grandmother told me. 3 girls decided to do this and then stood back. One girl saw a man walk in and sit at the meal she made(future husband), another saw a dog walk in and sit at her spot, the last one saw a casket float in and sit at her plate (meaning, she'd die before marrying). I asked her what the dog represented and she said it probably meant she was going to be attacked by a big dog. Some of these tales she told me made me think people expected mostly bad to happen.

If someone gives you plants or seeds don't say thank you. The plants will die and the seeds won't grow good. Mama was real strict on that one. If someone hands you a pocketknife to use, if the blade is open hand it back open and if it's closed hand it back closed. Don't whistle outside after dark or a haint will come calling and if you hear something call out your name calmly walk back inside and make sure the door is shut tight. A feather crown in a pillow means death. Hang a horseshoe open end up so your luck don't run out. For every day it thunders in February it will frost that day in April. A rainbow around the moon means really bad weather is coming. If you dream about a snake someone is trying to conjure a hex on you. If a black cat runs in front of your vehicle wet your finger and quickly mark 3 x's on the windshield. If a news bee hovers in front of your face something good is coming. Put a coin in cooked cabbage on new years day so more money will come than the year before. A female on her monthly (we call it moontime) is to never go in the garden or every place she walks the plants will wither and die and don't can or make fudge. The jars will bust or not seal and the fudge won't set. Every place you plant a bean seed, step on it so there will be an abundance of beans on the vine. Never put sassafras in a fire.

Evening, Kin Folks. Granny used to say if a woman was pregnant and she was severely startled, the baby would be marked. When i was 7 months pregnant with my daughter, we had bad moles in the yard. They left tunnels everywhere. My husband got one to come to the surface. He kicked it and it hit me in my pregnant belly. Granny started screaming and saying my baby was gona be born looking like a mole. 😂 She didn't.

My mom said if you sewed on Sunday you'd have to root the stitches out with your nose before you could go to Heaven. If a bird flew into the house or a dog howled ( that usually didn't) there'd be a death in the family. If you're stirring something (cooking) don't change direction stirring or it would burn. If you burned supper someone was mad at you. If you dreamed of snakes you had enemies. What you do on New Years day you'll do all year long. If a lightning bug came in on your clothes with you there'd be a death in the family. If a herd of cattle were laying down it was a sign of a weather change. Gosh there's so many more I heard all my life- im 66. I've seen some come true! My mom's side were Cherokee and Irish from Georgia. My dad's side was from Kentucky. I've heard these you talked about and more all of my life. I really enjoy your stories- I've been listening to them, precious Donnie Laws sent us your way. Thank you for helping keep the old stories alive. Stay safe and GOD bless
