This was such a great story! Years ago as a child I can remember a gentleman in our church who would sing real loud and off key. He was always the first one to get to church on Sundays and at that time we had a bell in our steeple and he would always ring it. I don’t think nobody realized how much we would miss him when he passed but we surely did. I just love these old stories you tell, especially the ones that bring sweet memories back to me. 😊🙏

Same! Brings back fond childhood memories. Looking back you would think we had a tough life, but I long for my grandma’s warm embrace, the days when we sneak down to the river bank to go fishing, and the hot summer nights when we’d raise the windows and listen to all the night crawlers. And how we would sing those old southern hymns at church; they brought mighty a souls to the Lord. Oh how I wish I could be back in those much simpler times.

JD, you made me laugh so hard *I* almost fell off the porch myself! I'm an old lady too, and that took me back to a time when I was in a choir with its own Uncle Jim. Everybody in church would sing good and loud trying to drown him out, but it seldom worked. He had lungs like a mule and he was as tone deaf as a hammer.

yup, lots of folks don't know it, but I was a choir director for a few years and we had an Uncle Jim too! Theres lots of truth in this story. Im happy you got a chuckle out of it :)

Absolutely get such a delight out of these stories. My Mom and her family used to sit around and tell stories such as this! We're all from the beautiful hills of Virginia. @@amybugg001 Both of my parents had mental illness and were brutal. It was safer on my own. Life was a very hard ride. Im 73 now and finally trying to deal with the consequences of it. You do not realize how important parental love and support is until you lived your whole life and look at the unnecessary traumas it created. I didnt know what a healthy relationship looked like. I have a malfunctioning partner picker.

Great story JD. When i was a boy i loved hearing the old timers tell stories of long ago. Being raised in church i can remember squirming when a person that couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, thinking golly does he or she have to sang all five versus. I remember when Brother Fain Jordan was preaching and told a funny/illustration about how a big yellow cat had eaten the white dovevsupposed to bee the (Holy Ghost)... my friend, James&I started laughing & couldn't stop, kept looking over at each other & started all over again.! Great story.... I went to church with a couple of elders who were like uncle Jim..... but we never minded...the Bible says to make a joyful noise, and also to praise Him with gladness. I love hearing these stories. Brings wonderful memories of my relatives telling stories about the past. I especially loved hearing about the ornery things some of them did as kids. I’m 54 and even now my parents will tell a story about me as a child that I haven’t heard. My kids love it. Keep telling these stories please.

I used to love sleeping over at my Grandma's house. She was THE BEST COOK I ever met and baked even better. She'd tell a few stories but you had to draw em out of her. Now she had a heavenly iron bed with a feather mattress in every bedroom with feather pillows, you'd sink so deep into the warmth of em. She always had a warning tho "don't pull the feathers out". I always spent an hour after waking, picking up feathers off of the floor and poking em back into the pillows. I couldn't help it! I had to pull the feathers, they poked out at me like they was taunting me! (I was just a little girl.) ha ha Grandma loved watching wrestling, and snored like a freight train when she slept. I LOVED my Grandma! They called her Ollie (cute, huh?) cuz her middle name was Olive. RIP Grandma.

What a fabulous recollection of a lost time! I truly believe we don’t have the warmth and sense of community like in the olden days. I would have loved to sit on the porch listening to my grandmother telling stories. I do remember when ever we got to visit we always got oatmeal raisin cookies bigger than the size of our hands and were told to go outside to eat them! The house always smelled like deer jerky, very smoky! Sometimes we could smell mothballs also. Boy did this story let me reclaim some old memories and make me laugh! Thank you JD you are quite the story teller!!

Wonderful story! Brings back memories of my great-grandparents. They helped raise me. Going to church and revival meetings with them was my favorite thing to do, even into my teens. I had an old organ that was shipped from England, with the paperwork from the church it was shipped from. Beautiful organ that was so grand. I had a friend pass a few years ago. His only concern in regards to what became part of his funeral was that they did not include Amazing Grace. His thoughts were that he had heard enough of the song at every funeral, service, or whatever, he'd appreciate it didn't get done. Break the mold, so to speak. Of course, he'd told his wife he'd sit up in his coffin if that song got played. Well, Preachers, being teachers and spreading the word of God just HAD to insert the words into his words about the dearly departed. No music, just the first line. Tastefully, I might add. However, both his wife and myself both took that moment to look over at him, laying in his coffin just in case we offended the Old Boy and he would do JUST what he said he would do. He would have if he could. That memory came back when that lady asked that the squawk box to NOT sing at her funeral. Another good story. I loved it. Thank you. 😊

Reminds me of my piano playing. Now I played the piano by ear. Now my cousin on my Daddys side was an accomplished piano player and song writer having many songs published. When we would visit my great aunt and uncle my fingers would just be itching to get at that piano cause I could play most of the songs my cousin had wrote just by listening to her play. Now my Aunt would hear nothing of that! This here is a delicate piece of equipment she would say NOT to be played with!!! Law how I remember that broke my heart.I still kept on playing my cousins songs and in church too.

These old church stories remind me of when I was a small boy and most folks attended church on Sundays. I remember sitting on our front porch and seeing pickup trucks passing by with people sitting in those old hickory bark bottom chairs, in the truck beds, on their way to church. Many people walked long distances to church. My parents didn't go to church, but they listened to those old church services on the radio all day on Sunday. It brings tears to my eyes to think what we have lost here in Appalachia since I was a child. Thanks JD for the great story!

What an amazing channel.. I experienced a little of the way life once was on the little island I was born on, Lastovo.. At 13 yrs old we went back for 1 year & it was a paradise, sea full of fish and vineyards with organic fruits and vegetables & people helped each other. How life has changed & for the worse, apartments & lot's of tourists and plastic washing in once pristine bays 💧

You brought tears to my eyes brother oh how I do miss my pawpaw I'm 40 years old and this new generation ain't gona get the stories we got growing up I grew up on a farm and was born in forrest city arkansas and my pawpaw used to take me and show me the hanging tree in town and tell me stories about Jesse James hiding out in a shack were we used to hunt when he was a boy man them good ole times will be forgotten without folks like you God bless you friend
