Appalachia Story of A Christmas Miracle in the Kentucky Coalfields and the Power of Prayer

Donnie, here is a true story about a miracle that happened to our family in Virginia. I had a Great Aunt named Nanny, we just called her Aunt Nan. She was married to Bob and they had three boys named Ervin, George and David. "I'm named after David." This was in the 1930s and as most people know the 30s was kind of a ruff time especially in the Southern Appalachians. At this time her boys were still in grade school. Bob was drunk and would be gone for a period of time just drinking, don't work and nothing coming in for the family. On the flip side, Aunt Nan was a very Godly woman, always Praying for Bob and her family. One morning Aunt Nan took the last six slides of bread and scraped the last of the peanut butter from the jar and gave them to her boys to eat for lunch at school. As soon as her boys left she went to her bedroom and started Praying for God's help, there was no money, no more food and no one to help. When she finished Praying, before she could stand up, someone was knocking at the door. She went to the door and a young boy was standing on the porch. She asked the boy if she could help him? He said, No, but my FATHER said you needed this. And handed her a $20.00 Bill. The boy just turned around and walked up the street never to see him again. And everyone knows in the 1930s what $20.00 could buy. She started rejoicing and thanking GOD for the miracle. That story is 95 years old and everyone in the family from Aunt Nan to right now knows the Boy was an Angel sent from God to meet her needs. Thanks for sharing your story Donnie. David

This story reminds me of how my good friend lived in the mountains of west virginia as a child. She passed away a month ago. She loved Christmas and Our Blessed Lord with all her heart. I’m a firm believer in the power of prayer! I’ve seen it. When I was working as a nurse tech while I was studying nursing, I worked on a rehab floor in one of the local hospitals. Every night I went into work, this particular patient would start vomiting around 10:30pm and continued throughout my shift. This went on for DAYS. One night I was caring for him and my heart was breaking for his misery. I put my hands on his forearm and forehead and just started praying. I felt this really warm sensation flowing through me through my hands and fingers. I just allowed it to flow through me. The next thing I knew, this patient stopped vomiting and it never happened again while he was in the hospital. I know God answered my prayer for that night. He’s answered other prayers too, but this one continues to stand out for me. I would pray for a lot of the patients I took care of when I was working as a nurse. After i became older me and mom and sister Darlene used yo make fudge, cakes, pies to distribute around to different families. Mom would buy a case of oranges, a case of apples and about 5# of ribbon candy, creme drops, bonbons. We would gohome and mo took brown paper bags and divided this stuff out to all the differet household with children. We couldnt always do it but it made me proud of my mother and daddy when we could. Mommy knewexactly how any children was in each house. So sometimes in a feedsack she would put the brown paper sacks and we would load up after dark ad daddy would stop and one of us kids would run up on the porch and beat on the door and leave the bag hanging on doorknob and run like hell. One yearg it really pressed us financially to do this but mommy and daddy and us older kids agreed instead of us getting presents wed keep up the fruit and candy bags. After we got done and came back home there were several boxes on OUR own front porch. It had enough food to make a huge dinner. Mom and us girls started cooking. At daylight daddy would take off and go around inviting people to dinner. We were blessed and passed it along. This didnt happen much. Only when Daddy wasnt drinking. But NOBODY in our community knew who was behind these bags of goddies dropped off on Christmas eve. .

I thank God, still men like Donnie Laws- to share these old memories and share real life .. Kids these days need to know how it was and is.. Still up in Appalachians - managing to survive even after what they have been through. The lose of loved ones, loss of their homes from the storm.. they are the survivors.. i love you all! My mamaw was raised up on a dirt floor in the Smokey mountains. They were the strongest hardest and most loving women . Hard men, yes.. my papaw was hard but he loved my mamaw and had lots of kids and food on the stove and prayers everyday. And I know they did the best they could at Christmas. But they weren’t people to want material things. They just looked forward to a good hot meal and time with family and play time with my cousins and family. Man I miss that!!

I love this video I remember my grandma and dad told me about all that they got for Christmas was an orange and a stick of candy in a brown paper bag. My grandma didn't have much but she always wanted to give you something a pair of socks or something. But what really mattered was the love it was given with. ❤😢

I left Kentucky years ago to find work. I go back every 8 to 10 years and I go to my old family homestead and I just cry. I love those mountains but they make me so sad to remember how hard life really was.

I stumbled upon this channel and it touched my heart. I’m from Harlan, ky but left when I was able to. My best Christmas memory was of my granny. She didn’t have much and there was a lot of us, so every year she would hand make us gifts. One year she made us Barbie doll furniture out of plastic canvas and yarn. It was the best gift I had ever received. I’m 40 years old and this year we cut down our own tree, put old fashioned decorations on it (even strung popcorn). It reminds me of Christmas in those mountains. I’m only missing the wood stove but one day I’ll have me a cabin in the woods. Thanks for sharing.

Aweee I just loved this story. I remember my grandmother said oranges ,apples and small peppermint sticks always made her think of Christmas. It's what they got for Christmas in their stockings, 1 of each when they were growing up. There was always bowls of oranges, apples and peppermint in the glass candy dish when I was growing up. There were spices in a pan of water on the wood stove, I still do this. 🥰 Im so proud to have been raised in the country, in the good life. I get the honor of living in my grandparents old log home. The dog trot has long been closed with porches on the front and back. I still sleep in the same room my grandparents did. We always had a bed in there as well as a couch. I grew up in the WVa. mountains and that's exactly how it was. No electricity and no running water. Mommy and four of us kids lived in a one room house. We lived off of government camotaties. Life was good and we walked a mile to the church twice a week. I still live here in the mountains and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

As always it’s good to hear these stories. Most of today the youth today really have no idea of how good of a life they truly have. I have told my kids and grandkids stories of growing up in my time. I’ve told them that back in the days we didn’t have cell phones, computers, air conditioning, and so forth. They would listen and then they would ask “ well what did you do? How did you look thing’s up? How did you stay cool and so forth?” I was like we didn’t have cell phones, computers, iPads, or air conditioning. We didn’t get all these things for Christmas. We did however have most of the time what we needed not what we wanted and was expecting to get. We slept with the windows open at night and feel the cool breeze cooling down the house. I told them how blessed we were back then compared to today. I taught them the to work and the value of how hard it is to make a living. Then I told them the true meaning of Christmas and how much he loves them and how blessed I am to have them and how much I love them. Keep passing along your stories. Donnie, I was feeling a bit of despair and then there you were with a story to tell. As I listened made me realize that in one time or another, we all struggle with finances. But after listening to this story made me realize it will be okay. I pray every day and ask God to place these prayers where their needed.
