This is the 1965 recording of Paul Harvey's Christmas story classic titled The Man and the Birds. Christmas Day in 2013 I spent the morning putting it all together with a picture slideshow to illustrate the story. I hope you enjoy it. Please share with others.
❆☆✡☮
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Michael - It’s sad that you would feel the need to speak about ANYTHING negative in comments about Paul Harvey. Your negative thoughts are also a bit odd, when you consider the subject matter of the story which he told here. You could just let others have their own beliefs, and not try to make them look like idiots. I don’t think Paul Harvey would do that.

I was born in 1950 and first heard this in December of 1974, living all alone as a ranch hand/ caretaker on a ranch in Gillett Wyoming. As you can imagine, that's a rather lonley life style. Then on a AM radio station out of Tulsa Oklahoma I heard Mr. Paul Harvey present this story. It lifted my heart beyond measure.

Eighteen years ago we lived up north where winters are very cold and bitter. My husband was in the hospital for tests and I went outside for a few minutes to be alone because I was scared of what the tests might show, I didn't want to cry in the hospital because I was afraid of my husband finding out how scared I was for him. So outside into the silent, snowy winter I went. Standing there with no one around I cried. Cried and asked God why my husband? A good man, kind and compassionate, should suffer. Then I heard a sound -- The two note song of a Chickadee. In the winter up north we would set out food for those hardy wee birds. Suet blocks with rich seeds and chopped nuts and cranberries in them. Because winter can be hard on people but harder on those creatures that bear the winter outside. Yet here, in the deep of winter, sitting on a bare branch, snow heavy on the ground and the air icy, a little bird was singing. I stood there for I'm not sure how long and listened to that little bird and I didn't feel as alone. If a tiny wee bird could find within them the strength to sing, to not huddle in the dark of a warm hollow or nest, to come out and sing despite the cold of winter, could I find at least as much strength to face whatever was to come? I went back inside and waited and waited until the tests where done. Waited with my husband for the doctor to come in with the results. We both knew that the news wouldn't be good but we also knew that whatever it was, together we would face it as we'd always faced our life: Together. The news wasn't good, the prognosis was bad, the doctor spoke of odds and options and warned that nothing was certain. My husband, the bravest, kindest, most loving man I've ever known accepted the the doctors words with silent resignation. But I heard the Chickadee in my mind and knew that we had strength inside we might not realize. My husband fought the odds and beat them many times over and proved the words of the doctor wrong. He battled for 16 and a half years. Never complained, never pitied himself. He and I together faced each challenge and found moments along the way to simply be glad of being alive -- No matter how bitter the winter, how frightening the odds. It's been two and a half years since he finally faced a battle here on earth he could not win. Yet even in those last dear hours we were together, he would look at me and I saw all the love of our life together reflected in his eyes. I would lean over and kiss him ask for just one more smile. One more memory, one more silent song to remind me of life together. Life is a blessing, we are all stronger than we might think. And nothing, not the bitter cold of a winter could stop a Chickadee from their song anymore than death can still the love shared by two souls.

Americans loved him but He loved America and it poured out from his soul...his heart. He was prophetic as well. He gave an address in the early 70's that speaks volumes today. The road we have chosen and the consequences of taking the road...wide and easy. Now we kill each other, even our own unborn babies..now we promote lust and defilement as lifestyle choices...now we suffer at the popular culture of nice...where Truth is relative and feelings are King. Well not for long. Truth is watching us. He is allowing us to make decisions that will lead to our eternal rest. God doesn't send anyone to Hell that hasn't already chose it for themselves. You will know them by their fruits. You will see the King coming upon a cloud with His angelic army. Coming to separate the chaff from the wheat. Coming to take what is His....leaving the rest for what is Lucifer's. The Truth prevails and those that hear His voice follow Him. Paul Harvey heard His voice and we in turn were able to hear Truth. God help us. Children killing themselves because their parents weren't parents at all. "We don't believe in teaching our children about religion. We don't want to influence them. We want them to decide for themselves." Great job Mom and Dad. Let them be eaten up and spit out by ravenous wolves. Lead them to hopelessness and show them how cheap life is by supporting abortion on demand. Rant over.

This story was told to us when i was in a Sunday school class for young adult 48 yrs ago. It may take a day, a week, a year or the rest of one's life to find a personal answer for you that only can be answered by God. At that moment when revealed, you know from where the answer comes. Thru the telling of this little story, I could then forever know why Jesus Christ came to us.

Hell I listened to him on lunch break at work. Fond memories of his voice at grandpa and grandma house in the summertime. The man had a unique way of telling a story. Calm & comforting.

When I got my first job at 18 I worked with a bunch of older people. Everyday at lunch they would listen to his broadcast and inside I would roll my eyes and groan..this again... But as the days went on I started enjoying listening to him, although I'd never have admitted it. After a few months my friend started working with me and at lunch she always wanted to talk, I was like girl!! Be quiet I can't hear what he's saying!! 😂😂 She looked at me like I was an alien and we started laughing! But she ended up liking it too and now every time we hear Paul Harvey we laugh. But I am glad we got to listen to him, otherwise we would have missed out. ❤

I miss him. Just one of the things I liked about his AND THAT'S THE REST OF THE STORY was how at the end he would let it lay for the listeners to GET IT on our own. Sometimes the jist of the story was blatantly obvious. Other times not. More subtle. That's why, even though the comment by Susan just at the end of the program was sweet, when someone EXPLAINS what everyone ALREADY knows, it takes away from the good feeling of the told, previous story. Like when a funny joke is told and some stupid loud mouth pipes up and EXPLAINS the punch line!! So annoying. Sorry Susan. 😢

Susan SAULS not COWAN. Was referring ti the mother telling her child about it being Jesus' birthday. Nice sweet comment but, as I said, explaining a beautifully told story just kind of spoils it.

My father had a big old-fashioned radio (I still have it) in his office at his factory. My mother's father, "Grandpa," worked there part-time. EVERY weekday, Grandpa and Dad would listen to Paul Harvey's show on that radio. After college, I was working as an itinerant speech/language pathologist for the county, so I traveled to two or three different schools during the day. I was, usually, on the road at 12 Noon, when Paul Harvey came on the air with his show called "The Rest of the Story." I carried on the tradition of listening to Paul Harvey most weekdays, while driving to one of my assigned schools. I thought about Grandpa (who we lost when I was 19 and in college) and Dad every time I listened to Paul Harvey, and I thought about their close friendship (there was only a 12-year difference in their ages, since Grandpa was 21 when Mom was born, and Dad was 8 years older than Mom). I've lost them all by now ... parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and youngest brother. Listening to Paul Harvey brings back good memories, as I am sure that he does for many, who listen to him now.

The Story is Open Ended left for us to Figure it out and interpret the meaning. Its a wonderful parable. To Me, the Man was doing the Exact Same Thing the Birds were doing (Running From God) and the Birds helped the Man Realize the True Meaning of the Season. It also means we must come to Jesus of our own Freewill and that we can't be Shooed or made to do so. When Paul Harvey Paused b4 Finishing the Sentence, that's when it hit the Man like a Ton of Bricks.
