Appalachian State University ( App State) is a public university in the town of Boone, NC. The university has a little less than 20,000 students. This beautiful university covers a little more than 1,300 acres in the beautiful town of Boone.
App State was founded as a teachers college in 1899 by brothers B.B. and D.D. Dougherty and D.D.'s wife, Lillie Shull Dougherty. The University began to grow soon afterwards and expanded in 1967 to include other programs. Later App State joined the University of North Carolina System in 1971. Today - the University offers more than 150 bachelor's degrees, 70 graduate degree programs, and 2 doctoral programs.

Here is a couple of cool things to note about App State:
. App State has one of the highest elevations of any university in the United States - East of the Mississippi River with an elevation of 3,333 feet above sea level.
. The town of Boone has a population of 19,205 in which the enrollment of App State is 19,108.
. App State has approx. 1,300 acres which includes a main campus of 410 acres, 20 residence halls, 3 main dining halls, 30 Academic buildings, and 11 recreational athletic facilities.
. The center of the campus is nicknamed "Sanford Mall". This open grassy quad is named after Terry Sanford , a former Governor of NC.
. App State won 3 consecutive Division I FCS (1-AA) in Football in 2005 to 2007. App State was the first to win 3 in a row since the playoffs began in 1978. After moving out of the Division , App State has won bowl games , the last being the New Orleans Bowl in 2019 when they beat UAB 31-17. The Mountaineers have a impressive history in Football. Many enjoy the games at "The Rock".
. App State is also in the center of a very popular area where many love to vacation and enjoy the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. The area is very busy year round but very busy during the fall time of the year when many come to see the breathtaking colors of the mountains. Then after a day of sight seeing - many enjoy a nice meal at the Daniel Boone Inn.
