A comprehensive gear list. You also gave some great insights into how things really work on trail. I have an orange Zip as well and enjoy the ease of access. I use individual dry bags for extra water protection but we don't get the heavy. sustained rains in my area.

Their education office is in the Community Building between the Mule pens and Maswik Lodge. That two night Indian Garden trek was their last scheduled trip. I used to carry wet wipes as well. But I found those lil compressed towels and soap sheets. I pack them together in lil tiny zip locks for daily pill doses. Weighs virtually nothing and only requires a bit of water from your bottle

I had watched your cold camping video and thought a mummy bag is nicer in cold weather, saw you got a WM bag, expensive, but top of the line. An experiment to try on a cold night at home, take an empty bread bag, take off shoe and sock, put empty bread bag over bare foot, then sock and shoe. Go stand outside with winter coat and see which foot feels warmer. Years ago I backpacked a portion of the AT in snow wearing sneakers that stayed wet all day. Ok while I hiked, but when I stoped to set tent and cook supper I got cold. Got into sleeping bag cold. Finally I took an unused garbage bag, cut hole for head and arms, took off long Johns, placed garbage bag over bare skin with head and arms thru holes I had made. Placed long Johns back on, slept like a baby, very warm. In the morning I easily crawled out of sleeping bag, NOT feeling the usual cold jolt in morning. Ate breakfast, took tent down and repacked, as I hiked on, had to remove garbage bag, was over heating. A double wall tent with no screen or screens covered adds warmth in winter. I have a Big Agnes Slater 1.5 person tent that is warmer in winter because the screen door has a zippered nylon cover and a smaller screen at foot of tent. I can feel the difference when I go outside the tent. I may try to cover the foot screen in winter. 4 season tents typically have zippered covers over the screens and usually a pole structure that handles snow and wind better. I wonder if a bivy sack beats out a 3 season tent in winter.

those topo's gave me a ton of foot pain on the tendons on the tops of my feet. but when i went back into the store to try and return them, a different employee than the guy who fitted me who had been there as long as the store had been open helped me and i learned i was sold shoes 2 sizes too large! went with something different to minimize the chance of the pain happening again. still nervous to give the shoes a second chance even though i loved everything about them. especially the color. my timp 3's are hideous

My max with food and water was around 30 lbs. It’s hard to tell others’ weight because, while we obsess over it so much before the trail, it’s not really mentioned once you’re hiking. But as far as pack sizes go, there were not many larger than me towards the end. Everyone carrying too much had either smartened up and dropped excess items or quit by then. In the beginning, you see all kinds of crazy oversized packs…

Having a hard time justifying buying a $500-700 tent right now. Also, my pack is what I would consider light weight, but not Ultra Lite. I’m sure that will change before I go! 😉

By any chance did you try the non-pro Ultraventures before you decided on the Pro ones? I used the non-pro for a long time and just recently upgraded to the Tereventure 3. Also... any idea how much all of your ziplock bags weighed combined (just the bags)?

I did not try the non-pro version, so I can’t compare. I like the idea that the pro version has a rock plate though. I know, I have a ton of ziploc bags, right??!? They probably weigh a few ounces all together. Worth it for my sanity in staying Uber organized.

They were both about the same, weather-wise. I was surprised at how few women started in late February though. I only met about 3 on trail that first year!

If you mean how much lighter it was not carrying a stove, it evens out. Those with a stove carry lighter, dehydrated food, whereas my food is comparatively heavier. If you mean me as a person, I didn’t have any extra weight to lose. I actually gained a few pounds. 😆

Too Tall, thanks for asking that question. I'm not man hating when I say a man - whether he needs to lose weight or not - loses 10 pounds as soon as he says, "Hiking," but women don't seem to lose much weight - even if the need to - on the trail. (Unless, of course, they're trying to do the trail in under 100 days. Then they seem to get skeletal.)

Why get the zip version if your using a pack liner? You can't use the zip function that way. You said your stuff got wet, I'm curious how easy it was for the pack to wet out?

Understood. I originally bought the zip version hoping that I wouldn’t have to use a liner. I was soon proven wrong on that front. If you pack properly, that zipper isn’t needed though. I do still enjoy the outer zippered compartment though. It rains so much on the AT that it wouldn’t take too long for stuff to get damp. You want to avoid that at all costs, so I quickly added the liner in my shake down hikes.

End of November can be a bit cold. I think late September to early October is the best time. Weather should be not too hot, not too cold then, and pretty consistent.
