At last, a decent video from someone who hasn't got tens of thousands of subs, or a million views in a month, and doesn't pretend he's a comedian whilst reviewing his gear. And no annoying rapid cuts, and no shilling for big companies. Thank you. Liked and Subbed.

Good information. However bad information also makes it Dangerous. Watch his video of how much it all cost. This bag was 0.1% of his gear. He stopped at all restaurants, motels, shelters and all the people and companies sending him packages on the trail. Let's all get together and walk these trails with just our wallets and a bottle of water.

Love darn toughs. It’s the only socks I use. I have a pair that has been through countless military operations. It’s finally starting to wear down, but still doesn’t have a hole. Another thing is there anti microbial properties are insane. I did a 6 day field event and wore the same socks in 90-100 degree weather the entire time. No problems with athletes foot or trench foot.

Great video. I hit the AT in 2024, and I also have the Nemo Hornet 2P. It’s great to see someone who provides practical advice, rather than pushing a Z-Pack tent system as a must, or $400 rain gear. Much thanks, at the tender age of 62 I’ll need all the luck I can get😂😁

Good discussion of what is available today for the trail hiker. In '72 a good friend and I did the AT with Frostline packs that we had sewn ourselves, external aluminum frames. We did splurge on good 15 degree bags from REI but otherwise most of our gear was from our Boy Scout days or the Amy surplus store. I had Vasque boots and IIRC Denny wore Bass(?). Clothing was mostly wool with cotton cargo shorts. No tents, hammocks and nylon tarps for cover as needed. The next summer we did what is now the Great Divide Trail in Alberta and British Columbia with the same gear. In 75 we did the AT again but southbound. Again same gear but I got a little extravagant carrying a very small cast iron skillet for our special 'after town' meals of eggs and fresh meat. It was luxurious!

I will say, after a thru hike attempt of the AT last year, that your gear represents what you most see on trail. We need more of these. On KZbin I see a lot of frameless packs. On the trail I saw a lot of Osprey packs and Amazon tents! And I love that. And what I loved is that it's a reminder that it can be done with a range of gear. You don't need the best and lightest to go out there. And as you know, you learn as you go! Thanks for sharing. I'll be returning this summer for a SOBO thru attempt and I can't wait

Hey Hollywood! Thanks for the video and the amazing quotes from mighty bones and no rush. I keep a list of quotes I love and those are definitely going on the list. Solid gear load out. I always enjoy it when I meet a hiker that loves their gear. Does it mirror my gear list? Not even close! But at its core it is identical! Just as your gear made you happy and safe my gear does the same for me. As you so perfectly said: gear is personal. To me, it’s as personal of a thing as what you name your first born or who you decide to choose or not choose as your life partner. I say If gear makes someone happy and keeps them safe, You should keep your pie hole shut and be happy knowing that the hiker is out there living their best life! Don’t be a Mary Ellen! So many great points in this video. I look forward to seeing more of your adventures. 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. -Grateful

Hey thanks for this! I'm new to hiking, and the AP is my big goal to go for while I do smaller treks around England to practice. After watching a number of 'big' KZbinrs I have to say that, while they've been great, the videos like this seem to be way more useful. There's no brand allegiances, it's literally all just personal experience from the trail. After worrying about equipment it's very refreshing to see the reality of what the trek can actually look like - I honestly thought you were joking about the crocs to begin with, but hell yeah if it works it goddamn works. The poles too! It's pretty funny, I'm a total newbie who's been researching into hiking poles, the different handles types, folding vs telescoping etc etc - and then I run into you, a dude whos *actually* done it, who's like "oh yeah, I didn't even pick these ones, I just found some poles and used them" and they're seemingly not even the same type! Two random-ass poles thrown together, but if it works, it works!

Love this comment! Thanks so much for leaving it. I know exactly what you mean, it’s hard to cut thru all the bs sometimes with the influencer backpackers. Don’t get me wrong, it’d be nice to have all the latest gear, ultralight etc, but it wasn’t worth the price tag, at least for me. And honestly, being “hiker trash” out there with a bunch of ragtag gear actually feels really nice. As long as you got it in your mind and heart that you wanna do the trail, all the rest couldn’t matter less.

Man I'm learning allot. I want to through hike the AT. I have never done anything even close. I am 350lbs. I am 7 foot 2 though. I think I can do it. I will try something smaller first. Maybe a 3 week trail. Or something like that. Though I havnt hiked any major distances. I have camped probably 20% of the nights of my life. I'm kindof a working by choice homeless person lol. I'm not paying rent I'm not doing it, or hotels gtfoh. Maybe once in a while... I've climbed quite a few 'small' mountains. I'm saying. I think I can do this. It's gonna be a battle against myself to keep going. I know I'll lose weight. That'll be the challenge though. All the camping and stuff, I got it. But this video is very helpful I'm making a list. I may cut things may add things. I want to do the AT in 2026. I can save up enough money by then to quit my job and that gives me next year to do at least one shorter one. I'll probably take a month off next year to do something. Idk what trail. I definitly think I should do something shorter to get a better understanding first haha. But anyway thanks for the video

@@PackAndSoul I had a mini Sawyer with Sawyer one gallon clean and dirty bags that were more duct tape than bag in the end...lol! I just got a Katydyn screw on filter directly on a collapsable Hydrapak 3 liter bag. Its so much lighter and more compact than my old set up. I also love my hydration pack...so convenient.

Totally on board with the one ziplock bag. Go back to the inconvenience of using the flask(if you must). Either you lug around little glass empties or put more pieces of plastics out there...... yeah?
@PackAndSoul
@PackAndSoul Жыл бұрын
Totally hear ya. Gotta figure out how to fill the flask without having to buy those little plastic bottles anyway. Would have to buy a bigger glass one, then drink the rest that doesn’t fit in the flask, not a bad chore lol. Appreciate the comment

@PackAndSoul
@PackAndSoul 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! I found cold soaking to be a great way to "cook." I'd usually put some freeze dried food (backpackers pantry, mountain house, ramen, etc) in a talenti jar around lunch time, noon or so. Fill it to the brim with water. Then by 7pm for dinner, it was perfect. For the cheap ramen meals, an hour or two usually did the trick.

Thanks for watching! Man, I’d absolutely love to do a thru with my dog one day. I have heard it’s really challenging though. Injuries, sickness, fatigue, even saw one dog who got bit in the face by a rattlesnake. And some people at shelters get pretty worked up if a dog barks at night. It’s daunting for sure, but I imagine the reward of doing something like this with your best bud has to be worth the hassle. I suppose just do a bunch of test hikes with your buddy. A few days, a week, see how it goes. Let me know too, I’d love to hear what you learn!
