My oldest son and I set out for a section backpacking trip in the Shenandoah National Park. Thanks for following along!

Hi John, just subbed and liked your vid. I've heard your name in the hiking community previously but didn't know you had a YT channel. Glad I found you. I am a section hiker & vlogger myself and will the doing the Shannies soon. I'm using your vid as research. Looking forward to watching the next ones.

Awesome! Fair warning - if you hike SoBo through the SNP, the climb out of Mary's Rock is a grind. NoBo may be better overall. Thanks for the sub and HAPPY HIKING!

@@JohnPetrie My plan was to do it NOBO. Most of my VA sections have been SOBO since after my NOBO thru MD I came back down to HF and started SOBO. I skipped that 105 miles of SNP so I could do it in back to back longer trips. I have done a ton of day hikes in SNP since I am from central VA. So I am pretty familiar with the park.

My last night at Zion National Park a week or two ago, it was 90 degrees at midnight... talk about struggling to get some sleep.

During a section hike of that same area, we too had water issues. After Calf Mtn shelter, we strayed from the current AT route and took the old AT route, which took us along the river and then back up. Plenty of water and the river was spectacular!

Interesting. I do not know where that trail is.

The "trail" that we took was the North Fork of the Moorman's River Road just after Calf Mtn Shelter area. It Run's along the river to the bottom of the Mtn (drops about 1500 feet) and then along the river at the bottom and eventually goes back up to the area right below where the AT then goes to the BlackRock Hut. It was about 1 miles farther than the current AT route, with a loss and gain of elevation, but it was very pretty. The river had water falls and deep pools.

Hot hot hot! Good thing the spring was flowing nicely. I did the Northern end a couple weeks ago...it was a sweatbox! That's a hard section when it's hot with no midpoint water spots.

Agreed and who wants to carry 4 or 5 liters of water for 12+ miles?

One of my favorite sections. When open the wayside restaurants were great.

We were looking forward to Blackberry milkshakes, but the lack of water sources ended this section early.

Very nice video John. Glad to see you back on the trail and enjoying some time hiking with your son. Smart that you played it safe after getting overheated and dehydrated. That's nothing to mess around with. Thank you for the video. Catch you on the next one. Stay healthy.

My wife and I hiked the Shenandoah in the fall if 2003. There was a fire and stove ban We also ran into water shortage. We collected water from a shelter gutter during a shower one night and hiked to a concrete well that belonged to the USFS. A ranger told us about it.

Good to see you back hiking. I was worried some medical condition was keeping you off the trail for this year. Do you ever plan to start up where you left off in the spring and finish your thru hike or just going to do section hike? Hope to see you back on trail soon.
@JohnPetrie4 жыл бұрын
Due to my responsibilities, I will likely section hike the trail. This was really the best year timing wise for the next several to attempt a thru, but Covid had other plans. :-(
