Sue is my first cousin, but we grew up like sisters. She is one of the sweetest, funniest people you will ever meet. She will keep you laughing constantly with her great sense of humor. I love her dearly and everyone who knows her or meets her are taken by her instantly. She is truly a beautiful soul. God bless my little Sue

My cousin worked as a lineman for the electric company in Ohio. He was part of the crews that went down to southeastern Kentucky to help restore electric service after storms. He liked it so much that he moved down there and got married. He really likes the people and instantly felt at home. He has been there at least 25 years.

yup I was born in 97 and was never allowed to play outside as a kid unless it was in a fenced backyard or playground and adults were watching. I feel like I developed a lot of problems because I didn't have the kind of childhood independence my parents' and grandparents' generations had. I recently read an article about "exploration playgrounds" (or something like that, I don't remember the name) in the UK; they are finding that letting children take risks in independent play actually helps them become better prepared to face those risks.
@float_sam
@float_sam 4 жыл бұрын
Where I'm at the population is now all old people really, so the density of kids in the neighborhood is really bad. So there isn't groups of kids to play with; with the fact the same old people circle around and stop and ask my kids where their parents are if I'm not RIGHT there with them.. is unsettling. Like wolves waiting for us to 'misstep' to get authorities involved.

The thing that jumps out at me about these Appalachia interviews is the lack of artifice. These people seem to be so straightforward and able to connect personally without the guarded posture so many people in the "modern world" seem burdened with. I guess everything is a trade-off. I don't mean to make too many generalizations or assumptions, but this is so refreshing.

Perfect advice.. I surely wish I’d had a wise person to put that into my head when I was young.. my life would have gone much different.. I’d have loved to grow up in nature except the killing part I’d rather not be around when that happens.. ever since I was 6 or 5 and my chicken had to get killed because it was sick.. that traumatized me and never got over that..seeing it running around the yard with its head chopped off put me in shock I’ve never forgotten.. the waterfall she described and blocking the creek so you could swim! Lordy I’d be in Heaven there. Thankyou I loved her talking..

I’m from Kentucky and I love it here I wouldn’t want to raise my grandchildren anywhere else . I only wish that they could have experienced a childhood like I had because it was good . We may have not been rich with money but we were rich with love . We got hand me downs from older siblings but at least we had what we needed . I remember one of the best Christmas’ that I ever had was when we didn’t have any electric but we had a little tree with no lights on it and my Momma had a pot of pinto beans cooking on the wood stove and Momma got us a little pink night gown and a tiny bottle of perfume & she played with us all day & we were so happy . Anyway , I could go on all day about my childhood but I won’t put y’all through all of it . I will say that we might have not been rich financially but we were rich in other ways & I’ll never forget it . 😊❤️

I’m in Washington state, never been to that side of the country and all I do is “wanna go back” I am falling in love with the appalachians and am discussing with my husband in taking a trip there. I am homesick for a mountain I have never been to. I want to learn to live the simple life. Life has become way too complicated. I gave up TV two and a half years ago and started trying to grow my own food. I crave it. So saddened that the drugs( I think brought intentionally into the area to weaken a strong people that couldn’t be controlled by propaganda and gov control) has invaded the young people. I hope they can learn to connect back with nature and learn to live like past generations.

These are the best interviews, truly. I've not heard a complaint , really, from *any* of your Appalachian interviewees. Reminds me so much of my sweet Daddy. He was raised in the mountains in Arkansas; 11 people in a 3 room shack. With holes in the floor so big, he used to shoot rabbits through them. Snow drifted in on him while he slept. But he doesn't complain about it. He always says, "You just make do. " Mark, I think you should totally go and do some tours of these folks' home-places. The 90 year old gentleman's house, etc. It would really be eye-opening for people today.

I can hardly watch these Appalachian interviews without feeling a dreadful sadness creeping over me. I feel so deprived. I was raised in the suburbs of New Jersey in the 50's, about as artificial an upbringing as you can get, plus my mom was an alcoholic. These mountain folk are so happy, and while they're so beautiful and wonderful to listen to and learn from, I feel an inexplicable sense of grief for times gone by.

As a poor person, I find this comment to be really weird. I understand the sentiment, but I literally do not know a single poor person that would say something like that. It’s probably because we’re all too worried about not making it for us to focus on our flourishing character. Maybe that’s just me but I doubt it. The comment actually feels like an insult. Whatever...

If you have never lived in a simple way in the Appalachians,you will never know. I was lucky to spend many many years growing in the Appalachians. The beauty of the area is you have a positive something to do,if you know where to look. Most of it is outdoors,living in a creek all day and running through the forest and building forts and having hidden places to go that no one knew where you were. I miss it.

In January I'm moving to south eastern KY, in the county nextdoor to Sue's. Back to rural life, woods, hills, hollers, and 4 beautiful seasons. I’ve watched most of your Appalachian videos and have to say that I’ve loved them all. I live in eastern Kentucky. I’m a nurse. I grew up in a home with running water and electricity. My grandfather was a coal miner and we had a very comfortable living. I never worked in a garden growing up. Not everyone from the Appalachians are poor or live in the hills. How about doing an interview with one of our hometown doctors or lawyers? Nurses? Businessmen? There’s a wide variety here in these mountains and it’s wonderful. That’s what makes us unique.
