Indeed, it's a fair price for this amount of work. I absolutely love the Apple 1 and probably looking forward into buying a kit. And also I'd like to build my own case, like you did, cause it looks awesome with the cathode tubes in it haha

You don't understand what a slow computer is until you try working with A Timex Sinclair 1000. That was my first PC back in the early 80s. My parents got it on sale for $70.00 and also bought bought the 16K RAM extension module for another $30.00. It would take days to finish a game a chess on the hardest level..

@mspeter97 You gotta make your own case, and use your own keyboard. It kind of puts you back in time because when the original apple 1 was sold, it was just that, the mother board only, you had to find everything else yourself.

@helium73 You could add a cassette interface to save and load programs. Slow, but it worked pretty well. Not sure if that's incorporated in the Apple I replica kit though.

@Pentomino The cassette card ran at 2400 baud, but it was much faster than the 2400 baud serial. The serial interface in Briel's replica 1 inputs characters just like key presses. Since the displays circuit is so slow (60 herts) the host has to delay 10ms between chars and 500ms at line ends.

@helium73 You had a number of options. For loading youcould hand-key in a program using they keyboard in either BASIC or raw hex codes. With only 4k of RAM, or about enough RAM to store 50 lines of text, programs had to be short, and you could learn to type them in by hand pretty quickly with enough practice. Or you could buy the Apple-1 cassette interface that allowed you to dump or load a memory image from a standard cassette player.

what did they do without a disk drive? How did you save your work? If you typed a text file on the apple would you be able to save it at all? Could you save your basic programs?

@robfilmmaker How did you display the output of your Apple I to your MacBook?
@robfilmmaker
@robfilmmaker 13 жыл бұрын
@KartSeven1 Its actually the other way around. I'm using ZTerm (serial terminal program) to send the program code from my macbook to my apple 1. Its much faster to do it that way rather than typing in the whole program by hand.

What made you want to purchase a replica? Was it due to an interest in programing for older systems or did you do it purely for the fun of it and/or nostalgia?

@Pentomino I used cassettes for a Commodore 64, and trust me, it was slow as HELL, especially with some bigger programs.

I think I was in a mode where you could set up the board, which is why the king disappeared. But I don't know for sure, I didn't spend much time with the game. As far as the cassette interface, I don't think it would be any faster than the serial port at 2400 baud. I've heard they were pretty slow, but I have never used one so I don't know for sure.

@Apple1builder Included in the kit are some .txt files of games with all the hex code. You may be able to download the txt document from Briels website or somewhere on the web. All programs have to be entered by hand, or the way I did it, using Zterm, which allows you to paste the code into the window and it loads it into the apple 1 for you.

I wonder, is there not a way of hooking up e.g. a tape deck? Kansas city standard etc. If it could fire raw bytes into memory rather than pretending to be a keyboard, you could triple or even quadruple your loading speed... and make saving a lot easier too.

Really interesting video! I thought that there could have been problems because some really old computers with serial RS232 ports used different voltage levels than the ones used in newer computers such as PCs. Did you had to make any adjustments or did it run fine like it is?

@TrickyMagic12 Actually, had you done some research you would know, Apple 1's were sold as just the motherboard. You had to build your own case for them. Some people made them out of wood, some didn't. Mine is acrylic. The cases weren't standard until the Apple II was released. My motherboard is a replica reproduction, see description for info.

I guess if it's maybe about 300 baud (fairly typical for the time), or a little under 30 characters per second, and then instead of sending raw bytes it's chucking space-delimited hex pairs at the monitor... so 10 bytes/sec... or a little more than a fast typist, but continual... Standard memory was 4k or 8k depending who you believe... a program that would fill up 8000 characters, at 10 cps, that's 800 seconds, a bit under 15 minutes. Add a little extra fudge time for any other overheads...

@ITSbigwillystyle Yeah, only that computer was an IMSAI, which had in 8080 Intel processor IIRC, it also didn't have monitor or keyboard, but it did have its own case and it was fully functional out-of-box because you could input programs and data through its front panel switches (each being one bit) and see the results on some flashing lights. I admit it was kind of boring.

The kit alone for just the board costs $200. I took about 8 hours to build/solder, about another 8 hrs to make a case. The cost of the case materials was about $75, Power supply $15, the keyboard was $50. The Apple //c monitor I used is worth about $250. Add that up, about $600 invested + 20 hours of work. I think its fair price.
