They will work it will just take longer. All hot takes is someone driving by with an apple device, phone, watch etc and they pick up the signal and transfers it to the next device until it finds your missing device or pet. The AirTags work off of Bluetooth best case up to 800ft. If an another Apple device comes within that 800ft feet the signal; of missing device is picked up an d then transfer to the next device.

You can't turn off WiFi, Bluetooth nor location for iOS system. Meaning it's always on even of your iphone is turned off

Great explanation. So, if my backpack (with an AirTag in it) is out in a remote, sparse location, (let's say 500 miles away from me out in a forrest covered area) the only way the air tag will "ping" or me receive any notification is if someone with an iPhone or iPad comes within range of the backpack???? Have one attached to my dog! Don't plan on her getting lost but it's best to be prepared! Also, should be noted that these cannot be used to track someone against their will. If an airtag that doesn't belong to you is following you around (thrown in your bag or car by some one else), you'll be notified that your location is being tracked. There have already been several cases where exes are tracking and harming their former lovers.

It’s hard to track my cat down because when I go to his last detected location he is long gone. My cat roams a distance up to 2 miles away from our house. And stays at various houses that feed him.

It will show the last known location it pinged from when it had any contact with an iPhone close by, if you know the general area you can also proximity scan for it and it will lead you to the direction of it.

You can open them up and it’s one of those small circular batteries inside, that will need to be replaced since they can’t be charged. They last 1-2 years typically.

If the airtag is traveling with the stranger for a period of time it will notify that person that there is an AirTag near them in their phone. But I haven’t noticed it if it’s a stationary AirTag and the person is just near it, I’ve only noticed this instance if the person is moving around and the AirTag is moving where they go. So if someone has an AirTag on their keys and you go near it, it won’t tell you. But if you grab the keys and start to travel with it will let you know on your phone there’s an AirTag around you. Hope that’s makes sense

It uses their phone on the back end, they never even know it happens. You don’t need to know them, their phone will just auto ping the location so you can look it up.
