Apple Car Play Hack for Harley Boom Box GTS!

Ryan, always enjoy your love for riding H-D's and the content you put out. I found this video from John Maxwell's latest video. You got a couple things wrong here that John clears up in his video. You don't need a WHIM to get the Car play to work (without Digital tech hack). The hard wire headset will work just fine and that doesn't require the WHIM. You only need the WHIM if you want to go wireless. The Street Glides and Road Glides Require a cord that has to be installed to get the female end of the plug to plug in the headset. The limited, and Road Glide Ultra already have this female port to plug in the headset. These bikes also come with a headset so there is no additional expense to use the apple car play at all. The CVO Limited comes with the WHIM Installed and with a wireless headset. The thing a lot of people don't know is that Apple requires a very involved application process for vehicle manufacturers to go though to get approved for apple car play. Apple wants to make sure that the apple car play user has the best "user experience" possible. They won't allow for that experience to be short-changed by a vehicle manufacturer not facilitating the max functionality of their software and interface. For this reason, unless voice command is active (by having a mic active) the apple car play isn't supposed to work because you don't have the full functionality of the software. So, I don't believe there was a secret update that H-D put out and didn't tell their dealers. I think (speculation) that it's against the agreement H-D entered into with Apple to allow the car play to work without the voice functionality. So the hack is just that - a hack. It isn't a viable option that dealers have been educated on to offer their customers. Anyways, hopefully this sheds a little more light on things. Keep up the vids. Enjoy the ride. As a side note: At the 2019 Model year Dealer meeting I was told that H-D just barely got the Apple car play approval right before that models were announced. At one point they were worried that they wouldn't even be able to include the apply car play in the GTS because they were still going back and forth with Apple.

I’ve said in past videos on this channel that Apple likely requires a microphone for full functionality. Apple is very good at controlling their user experience. That is why I was so surprised that with the latest update you don’t need a microphone to get Apple Car Play to work? Hopefully this clears up any points I wasn’t clear on in this one particular video. But, I guarantee I’ve covered it all in detail on other videos. I bought a brand new 2019 road glide special and the HD phone app doesn't even transfer routes properly to the radio. My dealership even called Harley tech support directly and all we got was that it was a known issue with no ETA for when a software update would be released. That paired with the constant rerouting attempts (admittedly better the 2016 version) has left a lot to be desired when the phone syncing was a major factor that kept Harley in the running against getting another brand of motorcycle. It leaves you feeling duped when the Harley GTS Radio doesn't work as advertised and in order to use CarPlay you have to plop down close to $1000 with labor and taxes to mirror functionality of the HD Radio that should have worked in the first place. Existence of this hack sold four Harley motorcycles today that almost ended up being Indians or Goldwings. They weren't considering a Harley before I verified this "hack" worked after I was suppose to lead our group ride and a large number of people watched the ride transfer fail. We then found out later that every 2019 in our pack was also suffering from the same issues unless they had the much older version of the phone app and older radio software.

As a stand-alone video though, I was just very surprised you didn’t mention you could just install a $60 cord with a $180 headset to use the car play. The Whim is not required to use apple car play. Anyways, trust me, my intent wasn’t to defend all the points you made. I complaint about a lot of the same stuff. Take care Ryan.

I went to my dealer today here in Indianapolis and asked them to flash for the WHIM as you described. They asked if I had the WHIM installed yet. I replied that I plan to in the future and want the software to be ready. They charged $55 and I now can activate Apple Car Play when I plug my iPhone to the USB. My hope is to be able to use Car Play on the GTS in lieu of having my iPhone mounted to my handlebars to be able to control SiriusXM and Google Maps, and avoid ever having to purchase a WHIM. I have yet to experiment with my older Sena SMH10 wireless headset to see what functionality I get. Thanks for your videos. They're awesome.

Took my brand new Road Glide Ultra to the dealer this morning. They were unaware of this method, so did it for me as a test. Worked great to their surprise. With HD headset, all functionality seems fine, so no harm was done by flashing for a WHIM without one installed. With my Lexin Bluetooth wireless synced to iphone, I can receive calls directly and inititate calls by selecting from contacts on the CarPlay interface via touch screen or joystick, and get the non-call CarPlay audio bits (Music, Pandora, etc) through the fairing and trunk speakers. Overall, this is an excellent option for no WHIM and a non-HD wireless headset. Good Job Ryan!!

You mentioned that your headset is bluetooth connected to the phone & works with the phone to make & receive calls, I assume you mean when the GTS is in Radio mode. But does your headset & iPhone still work together when you have GTS Carplay mode activated w/o a whim? My understanding is that headsets must be connected to the radio in order to use voice control/communications when Carplay is active. The GTS Carplay mode takes over your iPhone completely & disables a wireless headset connected to the iPhone. What is your experience with Carplay mode using a wireless headset connected to the iPhone w/o a whim installed on the radio?

Kevin Morris .... here’s a long answer; but even better news. I can now get CarPlay to play through my wireless headset, with Siri, and no WHIM!! To start, I have a new Lexin B4FM Bluetooth wireless headset on my helmet. I first connect my Lexin to the iPhone via Bluetooth, then connect my phone to the GTS through the USB. I then enable CarPlay on the GTS. At this point all application generated CarPlay audio comes through the bikes speakers, but all phone audio routes through my Lexin headset and mic. Call comes in, CarPlay silences the GTS audio to bike speakers, Lexin answers the call, and I have my conversation. When call ends, GTS resumes playing through bike speakers. At this point, Siri functionality doesn’t work through headset. Not sure why, it just doesn’t. HOWEVER....The best news (which I just discovered thanks to your question and my additional testing) is that pressing the power button twice on my Lexin headset module, tells the iphone to route ALL audio through the B4FM so I now get CarPlay music, calls, prompts and phone calls wirelessly WITH Siri functionality; WITHOUT A WHIM!!!😀😀😀. I’m deliriously happy right now!!! Side note: I have to control audio volume via the headset controls and can’t toggle audio back to bike speakers without cycling the power on the Lexin. CarPlay app selection control still works via bike controls; just not audio volume control.

I watch this video last night. When I got off this morning I went to Harley Davison. I told them about the video and I wanted them to turn the whim on and they said it had to have a whim before they can turn it on. He even went and asked his service manager about it they said they’ve never heard of this it was $54 to do it and they could not guarantee that it would work. They really did not want to try it but I told him to do it anyway. So when they got done I hooked up my iPhone and I had Apple CarPlay I told him it was working they said on the next update if Harley finds out they probably will change the setting. I told them that was fine. I got Apple CarPlay to work for $54 instead of $800. Thanks for the video

LOL. Sounds typical. EVERYONE SAVE THE CURRENT BOOM BOX SOFTWARE UPDATE!! That way if HD tried to stop this in a future update, you can revert. Once HD takes it off their website it's gone, UNLESS YOU SAVED IT. Always save software updates so you can always revert when stuff breaks with HD updates. It sucks we even have to worry about this.......

Thank you for this video, Ryan. I was on a trip this weekend on my 2019 TriGlide and thought i had Apple Car Play....guess what? NO!!! I guess $35,000 doesn't buy you Car Play. Such greed on the part of HD. I called my Harley dealer and was told i had to buy the Wireless Interface Module...$375 plus installation...so Harley wants another $500 from me. NO WAY! Hi from Mexico City, Ryan! I want to thank you for the video on the hack. I just had my bike flashed as per the video; it worked flawlessly. It took the dealer less than three minutes to get it done. When I told the dealer what to do, they actually they initially thought I was nuts, but together watched your video and they said they were going to try, but were skeptical it would work... Surprise, surprise it worked like a charm. Obviously, Carplay worked with the wired head set, but wirelessly now is great! Hi Ryan. I used the information from your video at my H-D dealership and Apple Car Play now works without the headset on my 2019 Roadglide. The dealership was concerned that the procedure could result in confusing the Boombox software and cause it to be dysfunctional. But after two weeks of use there have been no problems and Apple Car Play works fine. Thanks for your research.

Hey Ryan, I saw this a few years ago and had it done on my 19RGS and I just added a WHIM and I still had to bring my bike back to Harley to have them re flash my system as it’s not seeing it !!!

Has anyone else done this exactly as prescribed and not had it work? Updated the software, although the version I have doens’t have the “Y” after the “M’, took it to the dealership, flashed the radio, they checked the WHIM checkbox, I ensured “Projection” was enabled....and ZERO. No CarPlay. Am I missing something? **UPDATED** Make sure at the dealership when they enable WHIM that they select “Wired” as the CarPlay connection. If they choose “Wireless” it won’t work as I found out above. Second trip back fixed the problem, thanks Ryan!

Hey Ryan, it's now June 2020 and I talked to two local H-D dealers about what you showed in your video and they both told me that H-D has since pushed an update that blocks the technicians ability to set the microphone to disabled and therefore we must have either a wired headset or a WHIM / wireless headset or CarPlay will not work. If you see this and could provide an update that would be greatly appreciated!

FYI, you can use the HD cb mic if you have the connection port. No headsets neccessary. That port will not work with whim installed.

No shot you might actually answer this but I'm so confused and you're the only one to get me this far. I've got a 2020 CVO Limited and I just updated to the newest firmware. Projection is turned on, but when I plug my iPhone in through the USB plug I don't get any sort of carplay options. Is there something else I need to do, or something else I'm missing? I went to Harley a few weeks ago and they told me that Harley did an update after they found out people where flashing for this and they put a patch in to keep you from being able to do this have you heard of that’s true? I seem to be unable to get them to do this. 2020 Road glide special I just bought in January. I use a half helmet so no headset so I don’t want to buy all the extra wim stuff. Any suggestions?

@@RyanUrlacher So two years later I got a 2021 SGS. When I asked the same dealer to flash the for carplay they looked at me like I had six heads. Didn't know what I was talking about. I said two years ago you did this for my last bike. They claimed ignorance. I went to four, yes four other dealers all claiming they didn't know what I was talking about. I bought the plug jumper but haven't installed it yet. Do you know if that works on 2021 GTS models? Are the dealers catching on, can you actually still flash the GTS, and are they lying to me?

HELP: I just installed the “cheat” device on my 2021 Street Glide Special so that I could get CarPlay. My phone has been paired however I am not getting the CarPlay icon on my motorcycle. Vicarious Biker ... CarPlay works only with the corded headset, by design, and requires that the headset actually be plugged in. What you described is the “normal “ approach. This “hack” means you don’t have to plug in the headset cord to get CarPlay and don’t have to actually buy and physically install a whim, or even plug in the headset cord, to get CarPlay working.

Vicarious Biker Understood. For my bike without a WHIM, updating the GTS software to MY19.19.03.00 and getting my dealer to turn on the WHIM setting let’s me route ACP audio to my bike’s speakers without having to plug in the corded headset. ACP audio can alternately be sent to my Lexin B4FM Wireless BT headset directly from the iPhone.

Just took my 2020 RGS to get it flashed so I could use car play. The tech had never heard of this- not surprised- and we worked on it for about a hour (he said since I was teaching him something we’d figure it out for $$free$$). It looks like a new update has been pushed. We couldn’t get it to work. I guess instead of Slip-Ons I have to buy a WIM.

Hi Ryan thanks for the help... I just had my dealer flash the software as you suggested and it all works.. I'm running a Packtalk Bold paired to my Iphone and I have fully Siri voice command (Itunes Maps etc) which is awesome so thanks a ton! I do have question, regards using Apple maps as the directions are still coming through the HD speakers and not my Cardo PTB... do I need to do something with the audio rerouting or is this just going to be a limitation (not a big one IMO)... which I find strange in that my Itunes play through my Cardo PTB, just not the map directions... thanks again!

Love your channel, actually it has helped me a lot with the boom box. Only one thing, without the whim, you can make apple CarPlay work by plugging the wired headset that comes with the bike... off course this comes with the huge inconvenience of having that cord hooked in your helmet and the bike. BTW, in my Ultra model I tried to connect the wire headset in the passenger conector to see if CarPlay would work, but it was unsuccessful. Thanks for the videos!!

Yup, they purposely updated software to block that hack. Now you have to definitely buy only their HD headset. That's why many stay with older versions of software. Many won't every update.

Hey Ryan great video. I took my 2019 Street Glide to my local dealer today to have this done. They installed/flashed my system (no charge) I turned my projection on as described in your video. I noticed that you said the update was MY 19.19.03.00 when I went into software on the bike it says M19.19.03.00 so it’s missing the “Y” so I didn’t know if this made a difference. according to John Maxwell and his video you have to have the dealer turn of headset in the GTS....if you have an ultra or limited with headset 7 pin plug you can plug in wired headset and it should work....Just passing along what I have seen on other video bloogs!
