Hey Ryan, great job!! Question I got is.... I don't want all the wireless headset stuff... I just want my music to play through the speaker and my Google Maps to show up on screen for traveling so I can eliminate having to use and keeping my phone out. One thing you should note is if you were in the market for a sena headset. The harley ones are the same cost has buying them from any where else. A regular sena buy itself is $300. The harley headsets in a pair are $521.00 on a quick search. Same model

Sad that Harley is one of the most expensive bikes available and fails to address customer satisfaction: 1. Can't pair standard blue tooth headsets 2. No Andriod Auto 3. Cant' change the old clunky 2014-18 units out for a slightly better one.... I was in Cox's Harley in Asheboro yesterday and mentioned that I was disappointed in failing to be able to update to the GTS system and the service guy said, "that was smart on Harley's part".... I guess it's all in which side of the counter you stand on. Thanks Ryan for another great video!!

I'm glad that I ran across this video. I own a 1999 Super Glide FXD and bought a 2016 Ultra Limited last fall. I've been at a loss for trying to figure out the Infotainment system until I found this video. We bought a pair of SENA50S speakers for our helmets, non Harley brand, and no I find out that unless they are HD branded that they are worthless. And I don't have an iPhone, I just bought a new Google Pixel 6 Pro less than 6 months ago. I'm retired, not made of money, but going to have to make some unwelcomed decisions soon. Thanks for the information and I'm still a fan of yours.

Last year I had to give up my Electra Glide as I required a triple bypass. I rode Harley's since 1970. I even rode a Harley when I was in the Army Military Police. I purchased a new Tri Glide and enjoy that I can still have my Harley. My question is I wish it would include engine operating temperature. Thanks John

Ryan, I have a 2019 CVO TOURING. I’ve had problems with the boom box intercom from day 1. The intercom breaks up or won’t activate even with push to talk. It breaks up more with speed on the open road. The radio and navigation audio come through clear. I’ve had Harley look at it, do updates, and configure it numerous times. I’m now out of warranty.. I’ve been looking for any videos you may have that address this problem.

I just got my new 19 RG ultra last week and so far I am loving the new system over the previous one. Yes there is a small learning curve but not bad. The one thing that is killing me is that under the information icon and then the engine information you can plainly see where it says “distance since service”. If we do our own service how do we reset that counter???

I'm not an iPhone user so I'm glad I did not wait for the 19's to come out. I upgraded to an 18 Limited in May. As far as not being wireless, The last thing I want to do when I'm riding is talk on the phone, I ride to get unplug from everything. Yes - the inability to install this in my 2018 SGS really hits a nerve. My guess (and I could be wrong) is that I've seen some screenshots that show some bike details (temperature/tire pressure/etc), and that integration has matching 'new' parts for those areas. But if I could install it, even if I didn't have all the functionality (but got carplay), I would be quite happy. I'm thinking someone will eventually make this work, as I've heard that the dimensions of the new unit are the same as the old.

Soooo still confused after all this. ‘Updated info” may help but still waiting on a response. I have a built in March 2019 CVO Road Glide. I just did a system software upgrade from Harley, newest version from a week or so ago. I have a new shoei neotec2 helmet and I bought the new Sena SRL unit specifically for this helmet. Can I pair the wireless SRL to the boom gts and have it all work correctly or not? Or do I have to use the low grade Sena they gave me with the bike? It seems like all Sena would interface the same.

I really like your videos but I was hoping you were going to address the GPS functionality (or lack thereof) in this video. I just traded a 14 Street Glide Special for a 20 Street Glide and some of the GPS issues I am seeing are just baffling. First, the Next Street does not show a distance until the final mile. So when you turn onto a new road you can't tell whether you have 1.1 mile until the next turn or 250 miles. Even on the "Maneuvers" display it shows the distance for all of the subsequent roads but not for the next road (unless the turn is less than a mile). Very frustrating. Another strange issue is the compass. If you have it set so your direction of travel is always up (you can also have north always up and there is another option) the red arrow for East and West are reversed - East is left and West is right (which is wrong). If the white side of the arrow is supposed to be the pointer then North and South are wrong. I first noticed this on my 14 so I can't believe it made it into a completely new model. I don't believe it was like this when I got the 14 but changed with one of the software updates. Another issue I had with the 14 (jury is still out on the 20) is the route selection. I was on a trip to Gettysburg and I had the GPS set to fastest route, avoid highways and it said my ETA was 7:15 (current time was probably between 3 and 4 PM). I looked at the route and didn't like how it headed toward Philadelphia so I switched it to shortest route, figuring getting there a little later wouldn't be that bad. When I changed to shortest (still avoid highways) my ETA changed from 7:15 to 5:45. This was so bizarre I switched back to fastest and back to shortest and it still had 7:15 for fastest and 5:45 for shortest. I went with the shortest route and did arrive around 5:45 so it's not like it was saying 5:45 AM or anything. This was an extreme example but I have frequently seen it do things like this, and have ignored turns for various reasons and seen the ETA improve, frequently 10 minutes or more, from the calculated "fastest" route. Some of the issues I have seen on both models make me wonder if the QA department for BoomBox ever actually tested this on an actual ride.

My big complaint after going the whim route with the required HD branded headset a 30k, as soon as I'm over 50MPH the mic thinks the wind is a voice and shuts down all functions so you can talk on the intercom, no matter how I adjust the vox sensitivity the problem remains.

I'm an old fart and had a 2014 Dyna with very low miles. It was beating me to death so I called a couple of the dealers in the Nashville area to see how they would trade. Two of them offered me nothing for my Low Rider but the third wanted it pretty bad so we started a dialogue. I knew there were new 2017 Street Glides still in the mainstream and thought I could get a deal on one. The dealer talked me out of it saying that the new 2019 Boom GTS 6.5 was leaps and bounds ahead of the old system and he would give me a deal that I couldn't refuse - - and he did! I didn't walk away! Thanks Cool Springs Harley! I love my new Street Glide with the Boom GTS 6.5. It's Great! Wish it had the WHIM which it will have soon.. Great video Ryan!

Thank you for this video. I just purchased a new 2020 Road Glide Limited and wanted to know how to get the CAR Play function to work. I just cannot find why this years model cannot have a CD Module installed. Do you know why it works with the 2019 Road Glide and 2020 Ultras but not the Road Glide Limited ? Also, I was told by the dealer that the Android Auto option can be turned on by the tech using the computer.

BTW, the only maps software that was available on CarPlay was Apple Maps. However, Google Maps had an update last night that now makes Google Maps work with IOS 12 and CarPlay. So as of this morning you now have Google Maps available directly on the bike! Waze has announced compatibility but not released it yet. Expect Waze to have an update any day now to provide the same thing.

If you look under the parts on HD website they provide the button replacement in the kit which goes from information to back button? www.harley-davidson.com/store/boom%21-box-gts-radio-kit I believe it is somehow tied to the VIN and ECM. This should be plug and play on all Rushmore models but seems HD isn’t concerned about selling upgrades just bikes. I am hoping they are getting a ton of pressure over this the fix the issue and let us upgrade.

Your right and i am glad you brought that out. I have a 2017 and they think people are going to get a new bike just to get that new GTS which i say NOT. I have had 3 HD bikes in my life time and none of them had a radio until my 2017 street glide spl. If harley davidson really wants to upgrade something they can get rid rid of the chain primary drive & go with a gear drive primary and eliminate a lot of BS maintenance.

Car manufacturers are actually starting to put both CarPlay and AndroidAuto in their head units now. Ford, GM, and Dodge/chrysler/ram. For me, the biggest killer is the no stereo sound unless you have their branded particular wireless headset. That is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Harley is going the Apple method.... "do it our way, we don't care what your preferences are". Looks like I'll still just pick up a '16 RGS, save $15k, and mount my phone over the boom system screen.

Russ D. The GTS only is available for 2019 bikes per the fitment guide. So even a 2015 cannot upgrade to the new GTS. Rumor has it the GTS head unit is somehow tied with the VIN so only 2019 bikes can install it. This was a HD move, not an Apple requirement either. It is also sad that they couldn’t build a system that with a software/firmware that you could choose Apple CarPlay or Android type system. The effect on HDs treatment on this. I am never buying a new HD again. I will continue to buy used HDs but buying new is no longer on the table for me so really HD MOCO will not be getting any $$$ from me for new bike purchases.

Not that I am going to buy a new Road Glide, but this was a MAJOR FAIL on Harley's part. They will do anything to keep making us spend $ on their bikes. To me they are not very customer friendly nor do I think they give a rat's @ss about the customer. Everybody has been complaining about the Boombox and they didn't change anything. You still have to spend $300 or so for a WHIM? Also have to buy the Harley branded Sena? You are kidding me. I made the mistake of buying the Harley Sena and I won't be buying the WHIM! I hate my 2018 boombox in my Road Glide and will be replacing it very soon. Harley should have put a WHIM in every Street Glide and Road Glide from the start. @ReconDMV, I have the 6.5. I would have something that is much easier to use. I can run my Google maps through it. Yes I lose the oil pressure, the NAV, and the EITMS, but I can hook up an aftermarket oil pressure gauge. I can still activate the EITMS, even though I dont ever use it. The Harley NAV. The Harley NAV is slow and takes to long to program in a destination. I would lose dealership feature for finding the nearest dealer. To me the Harley Boombox is not very user friendly and is behind the times. Oh and I don't need to purchase a WHIM to use my Sena bluetooth.

Can’t hear my phone paired to the 2019 road glide. Everything else works perfectly, but I can’t hear incoming or outgoing calls. I have tried everything. It is on speed 4 and my phone is turned all the way up. What can I do?

Ryan, believe it or not, the new Honda Gold Wing has a very similar unit that is also manufactured by Harman-Kardon. And just like the MOCO, Honda also disables Apple CarPlay if you don’t have a headsets paired with the unit. The reason? Hands free. They are protecting themselves legally by having you use the SIRI feature for voice commands to navigate through the unit to help you keep your eyes on the road.

From my experience, both Car Play, and Android auto require a hard connection. The data is too large (album art, etc) for the amount of info that these aps can share.

the only thing i dont like is the navigation map. it only gives you 1 way to get somewhere, where the apple map gives you about 3 different ways like avoiding hiways and tolls. so, in order to get the apple map i need the whim ? unless theres another way to use the boom box system to give me other options to get somewhere. if anyone knows, please let me know.

Ryan, for Apple Carplay, I understand you need a WHIM, you need the iPhone to be plugged in, and if going wireless it needs to be a Harley branded headset if you want stereo. My question, will Apple Carplay still function with a non-Harley branded headset that I have on my Shoei Neotec II? I presume it will still work, but not have stereo on the helmet. Am I correct in that assumption?

Depends on the Headset. Many Sena and Cardo will pair among other. Just have to try. Yes Apple Car play will work if you can get the headset to pair.

thanks for the review Ryan, I like the concise nature of your videos. I ride a 15 FLTRUSE and added the WHIM, and bought 2 HD Sena 20s EVOs even though I already had 2 Sena 20s. There was no mention of maps. Whoever they get their maps from lags the real world big time. There is another upgrade path for the gen 1 Booms. I had seen several videos where the boom was removed in favor of aftermarket radios with Navs.... and WITH Android Auto too for much less than a replacement boom would cost. Sometimes we must look outside the box. That solution also removed the HD branding sabotage from the headset choices as well.

had the WHIM installed on my 2015 CVO Road Glide Ultra, left the wired connection. Result: Wireless appeared to work okay for Speaker and Microphone but on Wired only Speaker worked ;-(. Local Dealership said was not compatible and removed so I could still use wired connection. Not sure if this was real reason or not?

Yes, the WHIM install breaks the wired mic inputs. It's either the WHIM or the Wired. Can't mix them.

You'll need a WHIM installed. You'll only get mono sound with the Calvary and you won't get all the Sena headset settings inside the Boom Box.

Unfortunately the Harley Davidson App is only available in USA, they are more than happy to sell the bikes in New Zealand, but looks like they don't really care about the rest of the world once they have the money. Also such a long wait for andriod auto, any ideas of a new timeframe?

As stated, it will pair, but you won't get all the integrated headset menu settings on your Boom Box and you'll only get MONO sound. The only way for stereo sound and Sena headset settings to appear on your Boom Box is with an HD stamped Sena headset.

Ryan , I noticed when viewing map the view is plan which makes it harder to know which streets are coming up . I have a garmin which when viewing maps is more a horizon view and this give more time to react to streets coming up. Do know if it's my settings . I know there is azoom in or out but this does not help with the problem . Help.

Just like the previous Boom Box system, it is a stand alone satellite GPS unit. It has nothing to do with your cell phone.

To adjust screen brightness: Select HOME>SETUP>DISPLAY>SCREEN DISPLAY. You can select AUTOMATIC and brightness adjusts via a sensor. Or you can select MANUAL and adjust yourself.

I have a 2019 Street Glide CVO and love the bike. I have major issues with the Boom GTS System. ​​​​​​​ 1) CarPlay needs a mic (wired or Bluetooth) to work. Fyi, I have a friend who just purchased a 19 Street glide S and he is able to plug in his iPhone with no mike connected and it works. his software version is M19.18.42.01. Not sure why his would work like that when all I see is that you need a mic hooked up. 2) The pocket for the phone doesn't fit my iPhone max with the plug unless I leave the door open. all they had to do was make the pocket a little deeper and it would have been fine. 3) the fader isn't working correctly, if I fade to the rear the rear speakers are on, If I fade to the front the front are on, if I fade front top the lowers are on and if I fade to the front bottom the top are on so the front are backwards. 4) the sound is terrible with all of the speakers on, it sounds like the lowers fronts are blown and the bike is brand new. 5) the CarPlay does not stay connected, when plugged in, it automatically connects then disconnects then sometime reconnects on its own. I am vary disappointed, for over $40,000 you think Harley would get this all right! Anyone else having these issues?

Nope. Apple music will, not Spotify as far as I know. You can still play those through the Boom Box system, just don't use Apple Car Play for that. Just go direct to the Boom via Bluetooth and stream whatever audio you want.

Hey, Ryan, I'm curious if you or one of the guys have any experience with the HD 4.3" non touch screen standard radio? When I ride in temperatures under 60°F the screen frosts up and gets to be unreadable. Can I simply install another radio without having to take it to the dealer to get the computer flashed or have the radio coded? I bought a gently used one off eBay and hope I just didn't throw away $121.00. So in other words, is it a simple plug and play?

No chance. Not even 10 years from now...unless replacing with a new unit is what you're talking about. I've worked in IT for years and you're talking about a 5 year shelf life max for this stuff, especially with all the vibration. That being said, I bought a 2018 anyway.

It looks like I will stay with my 2016 Ultra Limited and continue to use my Garmin Zumo 660 on a T&T Mount and UClear wireless headsets. Yep, that is right I don't even turn the Boom box on, it's is such a royal pain in the @ss to use. Map updates for the Zumo are included in the price I paid for it and the maps are easy to install. I'm not forced to go to a third party and pay and pray the download will work. Harley Davidson seems to be focused on getting as much money from its customers as possible. And telling us HOW we will use its features. If HD had included a true Bluetooth Headset Profile in the new GTS system I would trade up to a new bike. I predict we have seen the last firmware update to the Boom Box on pre 2019 bikes. Great review Ryan.

You can't really go to a dealership and get much information because they just want to sale you a bike or they don't know. I have a 2012 ultra limited and I will get a 2019 ultra limited. I'm glad I waited. I do have an android phone. I guess my next phone will be an apple product. If you can't beat them join them.

I heard you mention it took 4 times to pair the Harley wireless headset to the CVO. I recently upgraded to the latest firmware level of 2014 Limited Boom Box software and it took me 4 tries to get my Iphone to pair to my bike. It would not recognize it after 3 attempts to pair. On the 4th try it paired. May be some lagging old technology problems incorporated in the new version. Just a thought.

Hey Ryan, Enjoy your videos. I just traded my 16 Road Glide in for an 18 Road Glide M8. Love the bike, suspension and power are major improvements, but I noticed an oil leak coming from the air intake after longer trips. I just finished a 1100 mile trip down the coast and oil leak is to the point of being a safety hazard as far as spewing onto pipes, side bag and rear wheel. I checked oil level and it was low a quart. I have brought the bike to my dealer for the 1K mile service and they are trying to pass this blow by as normal and said they would check it out but may not be able to do anything. I have heard other riders having this same problem. Have you've seen this issue with any of your customers, and what is your dealership telling them? I have other friends with M8's that don't have this problem at all. I hope Harley addresses this issue with the new bikes...Please give me some advice on this problem...Thanks Tom
