Iowa and Hawaii are both in the United States, so while it is overseas, it is the same country, so no passport is needed. When putting your story in another country, it is a good idea to check basic rules for that country.

My god, Hawaii is the same country as Iowa -- they're both states of the United States of America. So you don't need a passport to travel between them, and traveling from Iowa to Hawaii is not usually considered "overseas". Good work on making such a ridiculous error that I was forced to engage.

For anyone thinking the Passport argument is dumb: A passport can also be used as a form of I.D asides a Driver's License. You can't travel without documentation they can use to verify its you. Safe to assume he didn't bring his Driver's License

I live just north of Iowa (still in the States). If I want to take a vacation to Hawaii, all I need is my driver's license. Personally, I would leave my passport in our safety deposit box since I wouldn't need it.

Dismissing the whole "Hawaii is a part of US" passport discussion everyone is focusing on, I'd rather focus on the fact that it IS the wife's responsibility to be aware of EVERYTHING in her bag when travelling. When you check in to flights you need to confirm that you packed everything yourself. So the Wife is at fault too.

Is this story based in the US or Canada. If you live in the US you don't need a passport to go to this place. If you live in Canada you may need one. It's more likely after such a short time you would get the marriage not a divorce. How about fact checking or proof reading? These stories are always good for a laugh.
