Apple Jacks (1965)

In my opinion Apple Jacks is a very underrated cereal that doesn't get as much love as it should. Sure, it doesn't taste like apples, but it's still delicious.

Just had my first bowl of Apple Jacks! I had to get them at an import store, as for some reason kellogs will release most of it's cereals in Belgium, but not all. Very good cinnamon taste. For my second bowl I mixed them up with Froot loops and that works very nice. It sorta takes the fruity edge of the Froot loops wich I find a bit much at times.

I've been taught as a kid to always eat cereal with warm milk, and until literally few years ago when my boyfriend pointed out otherwise, I thought all other people did the same way. I've tried using cold milk few times since my discovery, but it's just too crunchy for my taste. (Sorry, I know you keep saying "Stay crunchy!", in my case it's probably "Stay soggy!")

Maybe it's just me but I feel like Apple Jacks doesn't taste the same as it did when I first tried them back in the late 60's with the weird apple face on the box. I wonder has there been a recipe change since it was first introduced. Side Note: I was all the way grown when I realized the face on the front was suppose to be an apple. It just didn't look like an apple to my 4 yr. old eyeballs.

Another great video Gabe. I too liked the Apple Jacks with marshmallows. In regards to eating cereal with warm milk is something I'm surprised you didn't experience until now. Nevertheless I personally only think it's good with certain cereals. To be more specific, good ole fashioned Cheerios are awesome with warm milk. Matter of fact it's the only way I eat Cheerios. Looking forward to next weeks video.

Ok, here's a dusty memory from the netherworld of cereal obscurities.... When I was growing up in the late 70's, the was a TV commercial for Total (I think) that had some guy pointing out the outrageous amount of added sugar in breakfast cereals. He had a black marker and kept circling the word "sugar" on the list of ingredients in various boxes of cereal. He would say "19% sugar...31% sugar..." And when he got to Apple Jacks he said "52% sugar". That blew my mind as a kid and still does today, but my questions are these A- Does anyone remember the commercial I just described ? Was it a Total commercial ? B- Since they reformulated Apple Jacks, what's the sugar content? I haven't bought a box in years, but now I want to...and try it with warm milk. Thanks in advance....Mo

I just have to note that the Apple Jacks produced today are very different than the ones available before around 1999-2000. The texture is much softer, far less crunchy and the cinnamon flavor is wan and insipid compared to the spicy sweetness of the original formula. I suspect HFCS and added fiber are the reason for this and in my opinion ruined the appeal of the cereal. Normally, I might attribute my taste preference for the previous recipe on childhood nostalgia if it wen't for the fact that I continued to eat them into adulthood. I stopped buying it after it was changed, The same thing happened to two other favorite cereals I grew up on that I no longer get, Lucky Charms and Froot Loops...they were reformulated ca. 2000 as well. At least they haven't messed with my Cocoa Puffs too much.

In addition there is less sugar in all of those cereals then when we were kids due to some FDA rule changes with cereal marketed to kids in the late 90s, early 2000s. Apple Jacks is very different as Gandy74 states.This is why a lot of those cereals taste different because there is less sugar (Fruity Pebbles, Fruit Loops, Lucky Charms, Alphabits, etc.)
