It's called a "conditional gift" - the ring is considered a gift, on the condition that the two marry. Depending on where you are, that can be modified by the ring being given on the receiver's birthday or Valentine's Day or the like. In some states, who broke off the engagement is also a consideration. Except in Montana, where the ring is considered an unconditional gift.

A hard working man very much needs to rest and relax on their lunch break and it was very insensitive of her to interrupt him on his lunch break at work for something so trivial as ending their engagement and cancelling their wedding because his mother did not approve of her growing up in a single parent household (even if the parent was his boss). It’s not entirely a waste of time. When my husband and I first got together, he was a major momma’s boy too. Tbh, it was annoying and exhausting. His parents were exasperated as well. However, with a little time, I helped him let go of his obsession with his mom. Sure it took over a year, but when I saw an improvement within the first few months, I knew I could help him grow up. Now, 10 years later, he’s independent, and confident. He is the total opposite of what he used to be. Both of his parents are proud of him, and I couldn’t love him more.

My mother died from a disease called Systemic Lupus Erythematosus when I was a pre-teen. It wasn't a nice time for our family, and my father was thrown into the single parent category very suddenly. It's a sad situation. I do have to say that my siblings and I lost our mother, but we gained experiences that have helped us substantially, especially education and parenting. In a way, we also forced to mature very quickly. We learned independence and how to take care of ourselves, or family and friends. We learned that if we didn't do something, it wouldn't get done. If we decided not to study for Friday's test, we flunked it. We learned to take responsibility! We learned that we had to get ourselves up, to do the laundry and wash dishes and not let everything pile up because we wanted to hang with friends. I've heard many who never faced this situation think the exact opposite of what actually happened. Growing up with one less parent and no relatives from extended family anywhere near us made us who we are today. We have great kids and spouses. I wish Mom were still here, but we'd all have different lives, and more than likely, we'd not have the same immediate family, and I love my husband and children. Single parent families and children of them shouldn't be thought of as something less.

If the father was covering for his future son being inept or that future son in law only had job because of her family, the demotion makes sense. But if he was a good employee, the demotion made no sense at all and the company could be sued.

He convinced her to marry him...and broke off the engagement as well as his *other* engagement. His mother is "stubborn" so he obeys. The company doubts his judgment and independence. He said it himself that decisions didn't need to be made in conversation between two partners. Could you imagine him doing that in a business relationship? When you marry someone, always thinking of yourself can be a great and rewarding experience for both people. It makes me think back to a wedding back in my childhood. At the beginning there were two lit candles. When pronounced married, a third candle was lit and the other two were extinguished. The one lit candle represented the union of the couple. Back to topic, only thinking about yourself means always thinking of the union where. the couple is one unit, “yourself” includes two people and not just one individual. It made a huge impression on me back then and impacts decision making for my wife and I today. We make decisions together as one unit and have going on almost 50 years. We had long discussions with our son before he got married on this exact topic. When he was younger, only thinking about ourselves included 3 people but it was with one voice for my wife and I and the second voice was his.

It would appear that the broken engagement is a blessing in disguise. OP should tell her FORMER fiance that he should marry his mom, since he lets her make all his decisions. If OP has an engagement ring, it should not be returned. And, if "alienation of affection" is a viable grounds for a lawsuit, the mom should be sued for that. And, she should spread the word, far and wide, that the former fiance is a "Mama's boy", to all potential marriage prospects.

@@jakdolphi and even then, at-will states (though this doesn’t sound like America), without other regulations driving them, can pretty much get away with anything. They can typically fire you out demote you for your behavior in personal relationships. If someone used the boss’s child to get a leg up in their business, and their partner mistreated them, that shows poor character. Add to that, insulting your boss directly for being a protected class (single parent) is absolutely a fireable offense. Many supervisors would try to separate that from their work performance, but it’s not illegal to consider personality in work reviews so long as it isn’t in the realm of persecution.
