Yes indeed but I wouldn't be surprised if Samsungites will tell us they have the same thing. What's really great is if I'm driving to a trailhead or parking garage and have a walking route after, I go straight from planning it on Mac or iPad, into the iPhone as a little "briefcase" of it, get in the car and there's CarPlay, drive there with little "morse code" vibes on my wrist giving me haptic feedback for where to go right along with voice from CarPlay (or iPhone if I'm in someone else's car), to the trailhead or garage, where I get out and have it on my wrist. If I'm in someone else's car who doesn't have CarPlay, I find it's much easier to do a half second glance at the wrist, than take my eyes off the road and look at the phone.

The problem was that 1000 feet would take me through three intersections and the street signs were not in uniform places at each intersection and it was difficult to search for them while also watching out for pedestrians and drivers who knew where they were going. My wife seemed to be clueless that I might have needed help and didn’t pick up the phone to give me tips, but pointed out that I missed the turn after I missed the turn. I found later that Apple Maps would say go through two intersections and then turn left on some street. While I believe that Google maps may be more up to date, Apple Maps makes it easier in down town situations.

@Äpple-pie-5kАй бұрын
You are correct. It's surprising how many people can't think it through clearly. Driving is inherently risky and even dangerous sometimes. Having a clear map you can visually understand twice as fast, can be a difference of life and death. Because eyes on the road. Having more humanlike directions given in a more timely manner might be too. Because sporadic spastic last second maneuvers is bad juju. And feeling calm from a nice voice that tells you ahead of time in the clearest way possible, keeps your head in a better space for driving. As a final bonus, all of this leads to a calmer more enjoyable experience, which is a true quality of life consideration as well.
@nixl3518Ай бұрын
For a single driver, voice directions allows him/her to drive without having to look at the map, making Apple's version clearly safer, as it predicts and describes events such as traffic signals, stop signs and lane preference well in advance of having to take action. Then there is the EXTRA factor that has not been named anywhere I have seen so far: the Apple Watch. It provides haptic information to your wrist telling you of action that one should take imminently such as an upcoming turn even as it also shows more concentrated map actions, most useful if you happen to not have your screen easily visible as you drive. There simply is NO equivalent and it appeared longe before the vastly improved directions. Google has it's work cut out to catch up though it has no way of dealing with the Watch interface.

Apple Maps has three useful features: 1. It will automatically mark where you park your car so that you can find it in a sea of ever changing cars in a large parking lot, 2. When walking and looking at directions to get somewhere in a city with narrow streets and tall buildings, it shows a blue cone that radiates from you and if you walk in the correct direction the cone will be in front of you pointing the way to walk, 3, If you use Apple Car Play and your car has a heads up display, it will show you your directions in that display. I use this whenever I get out of my car in an unknown location and this gives me easy walking directions back to my car. Now, both apps do sense when you’re driving and usually save a “parked car“. But if you’re just trying to mark a place quickly to come back to, this feature in Apple maps doesn’t even require you to open the app to quickly save your location to get back to it.

One thing to keep in mind is that while Google Maps's core functionality is essentially the same on both iPhone and Android, the Android version generally offers more advanced features and deeper integration with other Google services on Android phones. Google Maps on Android often gets new features long before the iPhone version. For example, the whole pinning of your location is on the Android version of Google Maps. Also, generally, Google Maps still does better, more reliable directions than Apple Maps globally. Also, Waze is owned by Google. You can use Waze and Google Maps interchangeably. Not to mention, some Waze features are migrating to Google Maps. Google Maps also has greater AI integration than Apple Maps. Most people will prefer Google Maps since it is technically still superior to Apple Maps. However, personal preference and what works will always depend on the end user. Apple Maps is still a good maps app. If it works for you, then I would stick with it. However, Apple Maps isn't going to threaten Google Maps' dominance any time soon. Also, as a side note, Google Maps has fully flushed out desktop version.
@Äpple-pie-5kАй бұрын
You're right about the platform differences. To add even more, you can't do Apple Maps on an Android except as a web page. So the app comparison is only relevant for iPhone users who can pick which maps app to use for different contexts. If you're on Android you're stuck with Waze or GMaps, and on iPhone you can pick from all 3. "Most people will prefer Google Maps since it is technically still superior to Apple Maps." For those who have a choice--that is, iPhone users--this is debatable and the main point of the video. My second main use for Maps is integration with messages, calendar, notes, browser, and so on. For people with a CHOICE between AMaps and GMaps, AMaps is superior because of Apple ecosystem. My MAIN USE for maps is getting in-car directions to navigate. And for this, Apple Maps is Mike Tyson and GMaps is a scrawny contender twitching and bleeding with a black eye on the floor and moaning "mommy mommy!" . After switching from GMaps to AMaps, the number of missed turns and wild dangerous traffic maneuvers to hit a turn just in time, has gone from "common" to "almost never". This isn't just about subjective preference. It's about the risk all of us undertake that SOMEONE ELSE using Google Maps might do a wild move and kill or injure us. Also, as a side note, Apple Maps has a fully flushed out desktop version, web version, and tablet version, so that whatever you figure out on one device is instantly ready for you when you go to your car.

Glad someone said it 😅 Using Google Maps on Android vs iOS, you enjoy better integration on an overall more complete mapping application. A lot of the integration features Apple users mention as a plus for Apple Maps, Android users already enjoy with Google Maps. Apple Maps is doing well considering that it excludes over 70% of global phone users, but its that exclusion that will likely see it never seriously rival Google Maps.
@GalaxyFurАй бұрын
@@nmeister67@nmeister67 Yeah, it's not mathematically possible for Apple Maps to ever catch up with the limited Apple ecosystem. It would have to expand beyond Apple's ecosystem onto competing platforms. This is also why the Apple Maps community needs to be bigger to give Apple Maps the details Google Maps provides on a global level. Apple Maps is good in the United States. However, outside of Apple's home turf, it's not as flushed out and doesn't perform at the same level as in the United States. Apple Maps is the most reliable in the United States. It's also decent in some EU countries. But it's not as flushed out as Google Maps on the global stage.

@GalaxyFurАй бұрын
@nmeister67 , indeed, Google Maps will always remain the top map application since its Community is vastly more prominent, and it's available on many more devices and across the world. Apple Maps works well in the United States, but when you enter other countries, it gets a lot more iffy and sometimes doesn't work well. Apple Maps is tailored towards the United States since that's Apple's home turf. Not to mention, the United States is one of the largest car markets on the planet. So, it only makes sense to dial in the United States for the maps. However, fewer resources are working on the improvements for Apple Maps globally.

One very important point (to me at least…): on Apple Maps the map while navigating is pretty neat, with the building in perspective and so on, but if you are just roaming around without a defined destination the map graphics are completely different and not that good at all. The map gats practically flat (even in 3D) with very pale colors all over that make it very difficult to understand what’s in front. On Google Maps (as well as in Waze) even without a destination the 3D map is slanted enough and is giving a much better view of what’s coming. That is a pretty significant thing and it’a also difficult to understand why Apple doesn’t allow at least to use the same navigation map…

Sometimes it didn't even save the locations you last searched for, let alone the whole multi-step route you configured. Just like Google's other apps like KZbin, there's zero attempt to seamlessly pick up where it left off, and that's a problem when your hands are busy driving.

You're right about Apple Maps on the navigation factor. I recently traveled to Avon/Hartford CT, and had opportunity to use both via Carplay in a Nissan Rogue to navigate. Consistently, Google Maps made it hard to navigate, sometimes didn't present a "route forward" view (and I couldn't change it), and several times gave me vague directions that led to me missing my turn. In one case, I circled a block trying to find a restaurant. Google wanted me to drive off the road, up the sidewalk, and into a parking lot. Crazy. Apple Maps won out. As a long time Google/Android/Chromebook user now using Apple devices, I'm a bit surprised.

Google maps was three years behind on updates to interstate and major road changes.

As someone deeply entrenched in Apple’s ecosystem, Google Maps is still by far and away superior in late 2024. It does everything that Apple Maps does (including dropping pins and locating) but better. Almost everything. Apple Maps does do contextual navigation better. 1 point Apple, all the rest Google.
@Äpple-pie-5kАй бұрын
Interesting. So if you're giving an accurate and unbiased score here, let me tell you how that translates into the most typical scenario: I tell Apple Maps I want to go somewhere and go there with contextual navigation. Then I arrive. So 100% of meaningful points, Apple. All the rest of the points that don't matter for my trip, Google. HOWEVER, if your score is biased, it might be that Apple Maps is useful in more ways than you're saying. Like * listening to uninterrupted music while navigating because of ecosystem integration to Apple Watch * handoff between Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Watch, for different stages of your trip from planning to driving to parking to walking to finding parked car * better contextual navigation is SAFER (500 points), and less likely to miss a turn and add 25 minutes to my trip (150 points) * the UI/UX has less distracting info / icons / options, so that I glance at the map and in 0.2 seconds get the info I need and put my eyes back on the road, vs. stare at it for 3 seconds and get in a rear-end accident. This is without even mentioning the fact that the map is on my watch and I can see it in peripheral vision while keeping eyes on the road... * the UI/UX looks nicer * the voice is more calming, more timely, I find myself much less stressed. I may not even need the voice at all because my Watch taps my wrist to let me know when it's time to turn, allowing me to listen to Bach, Mozart, or DaftPunk in a bubble of musical experience I'm sorry, can you please tell me again what Google Maps does so much better than Apple Maps that I'm missing out big time? I really want to know and get the most out of it. Thanks.
@SebastianBlixАй бұрын
@@Äpple-pie-5k Of course I'm giving a biased score based on my use case, but I also don't believe my use case to be different from most. In the example of contextual navigation do remember that it's not an "all or nothing" scenario, there's nuance. Google Maps (GM) contextual navigation is not bad, it's actually quite good. Apple Maps (AM) is just slightly better. In that same vein AM is not bad, it's also quite good. It's just that GM is still much better. For example: * I can and regularly do listen to uninterrupted music while navigating because GM is also integrated into my Apple Watch Ultra. And my old Android phone. And my Windows laptop for work. * In the rare instance that use my Mac Studio or iPad Pro for navigation (realistically as does the majority by far I use Maps mostly on my iPhone) I can easily switch between devices because GM also remembers different stages of my trip between devices (both Apple and non Apple devices), including where I parked. * AM's slightly better contextual navigation is slightly more convenient. Both AM and GM offer the same level roughly the same level of safety while navigating. 1 point AM. * AM UI/UX is literally based on GM UI/UX. While I prefer GM more rich interface they both look roughly the same and function roughly the same. In either case please don't distract your attention from the road long enough to cause an accident. * Both GM and AM have multiple voice options. GM also silently taps my wrist (or speaks to me through my Watch if I so choose). And can do the same for my non Apple devices as well. So while I don't believe you're "missing out big time", in my (and I believe most) use cases Google Maps is still the better navigation app in late 2024. It can do everything that Apple Maps can do, and on multiple platforms. I will say, that if you lived in a COMPLETELY enclosed Apple echo chamber, and never used or interacted with a non Apple device, and never interacted with another person or entity that used a non Apple device, then Apple Maps would indeed be just as good as Google Maps.
