A lot of people use iPads as drawing tablets, photo/video editing or other kinds of work that kinda stuff can involve big files that will quickly take up that storage. But if you are just using an iPad for streaming content and basic email services and a few games the base model will be more than enough.

I also draw a bit and usually game on my iPad instead of the iPhone cuz of the bigger screen. So I cannot possible make do in 64gbs... 128 probably but definitely not 64.

I'm currently using a phone (android), with 64GB of storage only using the apps I need and haven't had any issues in regards to storage. I had a 128GB iphone as my first actual phone (phone with service and a nuber) and with all the apps I needed, my storage already filled up to like 85-90%. 64GB is TERRIBLE for iphones and ipads. 128GB is doable for probably the average person who doesn't take a lot of photos or videos and only needs like 3 additional apps like WhatsApp and/or Facebook or some other socail application 64GB is the BARE minimum for android devices. 128GB is a lot better and I'm pretty sure is what most android devices start at nowadays. The main problem comes down to the amount of ram.

RAM prices too. I had a company-given Macbook Air at some point and I was pleasantly impressed with it so I figured I should at least consider a Macbook Pro since I kinda need a new laptop. Then I see 1.6k for an 8GB Macbook Pro and 2k for 18GB. That's absolutely hilarious pricing, as I need at least 24GB of RAM due to work. And that's for the 14 inch one. Every time I consider Apple products they have this habit of quickly reminding me why they don't deserve my money.

And base capacity isn't really a problem in itself, it's the asking price for that base capacity. Also, you'd be surprised how cheap that unified memory is. Apple banks on it not being popular and justifying it, but the reality is that shared memory such as that is still super cheap. I don't think they're spending even $10 for each 8GB of unified memory produced.

And there are plenty of other apps where the Mac version is less than half the size of the windows equivalent.!256gb goes a lot further on Mac than on windows.

We actually have a similar term for this in Psychology called, "Foot in the Door." It means getting people to do larger requests (in this case, buying a more expensive model) by first requesting people to do a smaller, more simple one first. I definitely had this issue when buying one. I didn't want lightning, and I didn't want the old pencil, which needed lightning, and thus you are already in Air and Pro territory. Then you get screen quality etc as well. Ended up getting a second hand pro 12.9 M1 for a 1000 with 1tb storage, magic keyboard and pencil. Very expensive, but also amazing device. Still my first and only Apple device, and have zero plans to add more.

Spot on observation Marques! The only thing I would add to what you said is that, when it comes to internal storage, once you're in the Apple ecosystem, they get that money from most people one way or the other. Either you pony up a lot of extra dollars to upgrade the internal storage, or there's a very high probability that you'll have to bump up your iCloud subscription to a more expensive level, which they collect every month, effectively for as long as you're alive. For the long term strategy and for a guaranteed monthly revenue stream, Apple would prefer that you sign up for the more expensive iCloud service level, but they'll get your money either way. It would be comparable to Home Depot and Lowe's being owned by the same company. The idea that there's a choice is an illusion.

If you want a tablet to actually use for creative work, you're kind of SOL outside an iPad. Not due to specs or power, basically every Galaxy Tab S9 model is competent, offers free upgrades on storage all the time, comes with the pen, etc. None of that matters when your software choices are tiny compared to iOS. Also n one seems to mention, Apple skips the very convenient storage spec of 128GB which would equal to the maximum amount of storage a regular person would use on a mobile device. However they made a gap of 4x between the two specs to act like you are getting a good bargain. The best bargain would be half of the what they would charge extra for 256GB, for 128GB of storage. Apple literally does this with ALL their products and it infuriates me everytime.

Apple doesn't do anything more. All phones, tablets and computers do the exact same thing. They may get there differently but serve the same purpose. The ONLY thing Apple really has going for them, and they know this, is crappy old iMessage tech. The differentiation in which color bubbles your text has leads kids to shame others. It's horrific. My hope is Europe's legislation (like for the USB C port) eliminates that crap.

But apparently I need to sync it to an Apple device, and all I have right now is an old-ass iPad Air. So no thanks, Apple. I ended up buying a Huawei GT3 Pro and a super-discounted Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. One is perfectly synced to my Galaxy S22+. One I take with me freediving (and looks great with a suit).

What competition is there that matches Apple silicon and, specifically, the overall quality and features of the MacBooks? Sure, you can buy a Windows machine that has upgradeable RAM or even 16 GB on its base model, but then you sacrifice screen quality in multiple ways. Or You sacrifice battery life and trackpad quality. The point is, Apple is putting out products that are overall much better than the competition because despite their crappy pricing of RAM and SSD upgrades, they are still providing better quality of everything else. I can spec an awesome Dell XPS with 32 GB of RAM, 1 TB SSD and it’ll have a great screen but guess what? Battery life is terrible and it heats up. What are you going to pick? Something that is nearly the same price as a 14 inch MacBook Pro, that has ridiculous pricing for upgraded 32 GB RAM but quality battery life, or the Dell that has significantly less battery life and heats up? MacBooks and Apple products, in general, just come in more complete packages. In fact, I would love if someone could show me a Windows laptop that has the battery life of the M series, glass haptic touchpad, 500 nit screen with all the colors and what not, and performance that matches with even just 16 GB RAM, because I would love to have one less Apple device.

For casual users, the best strategy is actually to buy the lowest entry level for that year. 2 years later, you can buy another lowest entry level. For less than the price of 1 ipad air, you get 2 tablets which can also be resold to offset your next purchase.

Upgrading every 2 years is a waste of money and is financially a bad idea. I guess if someone has a lot of extra money they could do that without it being a big burden but I think upgrading about every 4-6 years, when the device is starting to frustrate you or there really is something very very superior to what you have, that is the time to upgrade. The latter usually doesn’t happen for a few years anyways. Life isn’t about always having the newest thing.
