How is Sgt. Pepper not even on that list? There is no record in my lifetime that had the cultural or musical impact of that album when it came out in 1967. You couldn’t move without hearing it and it was hugely influential. Ridiculous list, but aren’t they all?

You said it perfect .. "There is no record in 'MY' lifetime (you said) that had the cultural or musical impact of that album when it came out in 1967" .. well .. not me. I never was a fan of the Beatles so its just your opinion. Sgt Pepper was a very over hyped mess to ME. I loved street American R-n-R (still do) not whatever that album was. All in all its just an opinion.

But that was 1967. It's 2024 now - the people voting on this list weren't around to be impacted by Sgt Pepper in the same way. Taylor Swift connects better with people in their teens now than Paul McCartney singing about being 64 or a frankly pretty dull Indian inspired Harrison number. I'm a Beatles fan and really like Sgt Pepper but it's not great in parts and over half a century later it's easy to understand people not being won over by it purely on musical preference.

This was a fascinating list....thanks for presenting it. I'm 67 and grew up listening to Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and Pink Floyd on Rotel turntables powered by Pioneer amps in dark smoke filled basements in a beer fog. For someone of my generation, I wonder...where is Court Of The Crimson King?...Selling England By The Pound?....Close To The Edge...? But answer is simple. Most 20 or 30 year old's have either never heard of these bands....or may be familiar with some of the music because Dad still has a few dust covered albums under his 40 year old wedding photos. In 40 years the same will be said of Taylor Swift and Harry Styles who may or may not make a top 100 list in 2065. Change and transition. But the best part of this list was exposing me to a lot of music I've either never heard of....or never explored. Time to discover!

So, it's the 100 best albums from North America and Britain, right? The rest of the entire world was represented by Bad Bunny and AC/DC? I always look at "Best of x" lists as opportunities to learn about albums and artists I don't know. There is no point in arguing over what should or should not be included, fun as it may be for some people. Having said all that, the overrepresentation of hip-hop but no funk at all was really hilarious. Also, Dillon, I hope your Taylor Swift / Barbra Streisand parallel is going to be food for thought for folks. Although I'd probably swap out TayTay with Beyonce there. Hey big hip hop/classic rock fan here. To make sense of why hip hop was hugely represented on Apple's list, I believe it is because 1. It's the biggest genre right now besides pop and thus the influence of those classic 90s records is felt much greater than ever before, especially considering its influence on the sound of house and modern pop music and 2. Hip hop is becoming a senior genre as seen with its 50th anniversary recently and thus because of its long lasting popularity the genre is undergoing critical re-evaluation like classic Jazz and rock records back in the 70s and the 90s

You have to see it for what it is. It's a list that was specifically curated for a younger demographic, with a handful of old trusty classics that are well-known by practically everyone. I have no idea who created this list, but it gives me the impression they were trying to meet certain genre quotas. Like, we need this many hip-hop albums, this many pop albums, this many rock albums, etc. I don't think they took the ranking very seriously because having the Arctic Monkeys above VU & Nico is a musical war crime. Everyone involved in that list has to know how ridiculous that is.

Yeah, the absence of early rock (especially Elvis, but also Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, etc.) is mind-boggling, but then again you could argue that those artists were singles-driven because it wasn't really until the Beatles, around the 1965-66 period, that the concept of an "album" as we know it today really took shape. Before that it was often the two or three hits (if the artist was fortunate enough to have that many), or at least the songs released as singles, sandwiched in with a bunch of filler. But where's Van Morrison? The Who? Only one Dylan record? Only one Stones record? No Al Green or Otis Redding? No Sly and the Family Stone (especially "There's a Riot Goin' On")? And, as Dillon said, no James Brown?

Your music knowledge and openness are refreshing. I clicked this link expecting you to be an old fart about it. I don’t agree with a lot of the list, but I’m trying to see it as a list of what’s best right now, otherwise we’d have a bunch of 50 year old albums dominated the top 20.

Perfect pace for this type of video. Overall, the list is simultaneously encouraging and head-scratching. It's to be expected that a lot of the list would be pop-oriented and relatively new but there were some definite surprises. For example, Bob Dylan has so many albums that could be considered his best, and he's not very pop, but at least he's appreciated enough to make the list. P.s. I thought "where's Sabbath?" right when you asked it. I suspect that their debut album and Paranoid would appeal to Guns and Roses fans more than Appetite but those fans aren't acquainted with those albums. P.p.s. I think you're right that Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed are more generally liked than Exile. P.p.p.s. Can't Buy a Thrill is of course better than Aja. That's not even under dispute by anyone who's being honest. 😉

It's a reggae dub cove of the whole album and it's (let me be controversial a bit here) nearly better than the original... No, it's different but if you like reggae and OK Computer, this is a must listen. Those guys have done Dark Side of The Moon, Sgt Pepper, Thriller and Ziggy Stardust. No matter what they say, what you have to understand is this list is based on downloads. It's what they do. The fact that any pre-iTunes music is on the list is a testament to their timelessness. As for me, I've been a huge music fan for over 50 years, spend hundreds per month on records, but can I can literally count on both hands the number of times I've paid to download anything. In fact, I've made far more money from songs I've written (that are on iTunes) than I've ever spent on iTunes. So this list has NOTHING to do with taste, importance, or influence. So the idea of comparing Beatles to Beatles, or Zeppelin to other Zeppelin albums on this list is a big stupid waste of time. Sure, they've pretended the list is based on "expert" opinions, but it's counterintuitive to think a downloads only "record company" would use some other criteria.

These lists will always be made relative to the era they were curated in. Imagine a similar list being made in 1942. There would be a bunch of people just like us saying "You gotta be kidding me! Glenn Miller is number 8 but Jelly-Roll Morton is at 42?? Where's Bix Beiderbecke? He's not even on the list! Outrageous!" If we just kept all the same records that top the lists year after year after year, it's sort of like moving back in time as opposed to making progress and allowing room for other records made in the modern era to be viewed in the same light as all those other classics that people hold so dear. I'm not a fan of this particular list, but I understand why certain records were included over others.

Well, to be fair, outside of greatest-hits compilations, Motown (by which I mean the main label) really didn't produce that many great *albums.* Great *songs,* to be sure, but most of Motown's greatest output was prior to the concept of the album as an organic whole as we think of it today. Motown's subsidiary label Tamla, on the other hand, did produce many great ones in the 1970s: those mentioned by @Shah-of-the-Shinebox plus others.
