Question, curious- 1) what happens when someone gets out of prison and has no home to go to? 2) Do ex-prisoners automatically go to a halfway house first, or that depends on the crime?

The resources and services greatly varies around the world. Even if there are halfway houses available, not everyone is able to go to one as there are strict requirements and they are limited. Where I live, if someone doesn't have a place to live and have maxed out their time, the person will have to figure out things themselves. Often they have a really hard time finding work and a place to live so they end up being homeless. It's not uncommon for ex-convicts with no supports to reoffend just to go back because they don't know what else they can do. This is especially true for those who have served decades behind bars.
