I told my husband there are two things that are deal breakers. You cheat on me or hit me, we're done. There will be no second chance. Once that trust is gone, its gone.
@astrofan19933 ай бұрын
I'm the same way. There are only two dealbreakers: cheating and violence. Maybe fiscal irresponsibility, too. But definitely cheating and violence. Even an emotional affair is still cheating in my book. That last sentence of yours is exactly why the Ninth Circle of Hell in Dante's Inferno (the deepest part of the realm) is reserved for traitors: all relationships are built on a foundation of trust. Once you betray someone, you break that trust, and it is near-impossible, if not completely impossible, to get it back. You can never look at someone who betrayed you the same way again. Your relationship with them is forever tarnished, if not outright destroyed.

Hearing these people saying cheating is no big deal and "it's just something men do" makes me SO mad to hear. No, all men do NOT cheat and there are many of us that will not put up with it. I adore my husband and have for 3 decades now, but cheating is a one way ticket to divorce.
@TiffWaffles3 ай бұрын
The whole 'it's just something men do' is very outdated. Back in the day, women were expected to turn their faces away at their husband's indiscretions. They weren't to call out their husband's for stepping out on them and taking on mistresses and if they did, they would be bullied into silence or shamed. There was actually an interesting opinion piece I found in some Victorian newspaper (which was lovingly posted online by some historical committee somewhere) where an anonymous man defends stepping out on his wife and children, practically blaming and picking on his wife, saying how his life was dull as a father... and because divorce was rarely obtained to end a marriage- he kept harping on about being trapped to a 'hideous nag' or something similar to that. And you know what is even more outrageous? The fact that I think I read a response, reportedly written by some woman where she agreed that a husband was allowed to do whatever he pleases because a woman was meant to keep her mouth shut and accept her lot in life.

@TiffWaffles3 ай бұрын
It was a very common thought process well into the 20th century where women were expected to ignore their husband's indiscretions. Some people actually still believe this kind of thing. Know somebody who got married to somebody who is ultra religious and conservative whose had multiple affairs with women, and her church told her she can't get a divorce because it's not like her husband's mistreating her and that she'd be happier in her marriage if she were to ignore her husband's cheating. I think it's absolute bullocks and told her to seek a divorce the usual way without getting her church elders involved, but she's been made to believe that something's wrong with her if her husband steps out on her and takes up with another woman. She actually showed me this really disgusting pamphlet that had been handed to her by one of the church's so called 'marriage counsellors' where it tells her what she can do as a wife to 'appease her husband' and how to make him happy. It's absolutely outrageous.

Well, sometimes in real life it can be hard for people to leave their cheating spouse because they think they won't find anyone else and be alone for a long time or they won't do better. Sometimes that happens but it does take time for people to gain courage to leave their abusive families/in law family

So he was cheating with many other women, quit his job 3 months into their marriage, he kept his monthly income of $600 for himself, she kept sending $700 every month to her deadbeat husband's mother, she was doing all the house chores, she paid for the rent and utilities, she paid for all the groceries, and was getting abused and insulted by the MIL, and yet she stayed in this marriage, and only got divorced after they kicked her out of her own house and was presented with the divorce papers from. What if they didn't kick her out and asked for divorce? She would have continued to live with him, does it even make sense. Even doormats have some spine and are courageous to leave such a marriage.

Alimony is decided upon in the divorce proceedings - if the divorce was granted, then it is over and done - you can't come back later for alimony. Plus, if she was the breadwinner and he made nothing, she would have to pay him alimony in normal situations, but him cheating would probably have negated that.
