This video is amazing. thank you so much for all the hard work! What determines your test load percentage? I'm deciding between the 67W and 96W chargers for my new MacBook Pro, which I will likely have plugged in most of the time. This means the MagSafe charging will be active most the time and trickling energy slowly, I believe. When dealing with a charging state like this, are the 67W and 96W effectively the same?

The load state percentages come from the EU and DOE guidelines on testing power supplies. 0, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100% load are the required modes. I throw in the 0.1W for ultra light load testing to check how they behave when a device is left plugged in. If you had to pick between those two I would go with the 96W. The cable being left plugged in could be that 0.1W test case. The thing I don't do is show how they perform if a higher voltage is negotiated for while not using any power. Many of these use over 1 watt in that state while doing nothing.

I don't have anything on that specifically. It is true that keeping a battery at full may not be the best but I find that generally when the battery starts to go in the laptop, the laptop is slow enough, inefficient enough that it's really time to send the whole thing into the recycler. Setting a charge limit is one way to combat that, but it is a relatively minor effect in comparison with using the battery. In general newer systems manage the batteries more effectively so they should also last longer.

On the 96 and up, they're going to do well with a laptop plugged in since it will hold the 20V mode, then idle down very low when not plugged in which is the advantage of apple, they really optimized the two ends of the spectrum where the adapter is intended to be used. If you use the 96W to charge your phone, which it will do, it won't be anywhere near the most efficient option. The 67W falls into the bin of 65W chargers where it may be good at real power efficiency but the apparent power is terrible so it will end up losing a few percentage points in the real world on efficiency. Apple does have some nice features with these adapters like the ability to ground the USB side with the three pin extension cable.

Nice review! But I have a question. If I am using macbookpro 14 with M2 Max, can I use anker 65W instead of 96W? Will it provide enough juice for my laptop and good for the battery? (Fast charging is not important)

It looks like for average power usage that chip can work with a 65W adapter. It will throttle if you are doing heavy workloads (rendering a video or something) but everyday use it will be fine.

awesome work! do you reckon getting the 140w charger for my 2020 13” M1 MacBook pro would make it charge faster or should i just get the 70w? I currently use the 61w one that comes with the laptop though i do notice that under extremely heavy load it only uses up to 59.6w. Do you think the 140w is ultra overkill for it? Thanks!

As far as performance of the AC charging adaptors, how does any of the bad performers affect the devices they are connected to?

I will mention in the video if the DC side goes out of tolerance of the USB specification but in general if things are within tolerance I stick with the efficiency (AC to DC) and the AC power side of things, they are really isolated from each other so not much effect. I want to add ripple on the DC side to make the DC metrics more thorough.

They still sell the extension cables for the Mac which those power bricks were made for in the extension cable is maybe around $2.99 at Goodwill, but they’re usually $19.99. Online I’ve got a 65 W brick.

Probably the 96W. The 140W crosses the line of bulk and doesn't add 'that much'. Unless charge time is all you care about, then the 140W is the go to.

Wow fantastic video. It makes we wonder. I have a 20 year collection of working MacBook chargers and would like to repurpose a couple to power other diy devices, if possible. My oldest is the Power Mac G4 A1036 12v 65 watt charger. Can any of them work as DC power supplies for a small bench power supply if the connector is replaced with a DC 2.1mm barrel connector? Would the voltage brackets (non variable voltage) like you described in this video be a problem or would the bench power supply just take the maximum voltage at all times that the Apple adapter gives (for example 24v in my oldest G4 Powerbook adapter with the barrel connector). I’m guessing that earliest Adapter would have the most straightforward circuit (?) however I cant find the specs on it. 🤔

Yeah, the older power supplies will supply whatever their nameplate voltage is all the time. You can certainly modify them for other purposes though. They make a bunch of modules that can adjust the voltage too, higher or lower. I had one in one of my videos, I don't even remember what year that was.

That is a tough question. I use a 100W charger with PFC that is on for all the modes. So, the Baseus 100w desktop or wall charger are my go to chargers. I do use the Anker Nano II 30W for portable charge though. I have the new nano III 20W which hasn't been tested yet and maybe that one will take the 20W crown.

Hello. Thanks for the interesting video. I have a question: the apple 140w does not have PPS mode as you say at the end of your video. I ordered the Anker 140w, but it has PPS mode. At home, I'm charging my MB air m2 with Anker 65w and I can see that the charger is delivering exactly that much current, but the coconut battery app shows me that it REALLY charges with a lot less to keep the battery running probably: between 36 and 24 watts. Accordingly, PPS keeps the laptop from fast charging, and maybe that's why Apple chargers are PPS-free? Then my Anker 140w makes a bit of sense, don't you think?

Hmm. PPS shouldn't prevent anything from happening. The device (not the charger) picks the mode it wants to run in. So, an Apple device should just pick the fixed voltage mode it wants and ignore the PPS modes. The one thing I have noted about Anker adapters is the voltages tend to run on the low side. Apple adapters tend to run a little higher on the voltage side so there may be some decrease in power capability from that. It is all about device implementation though. The adapters are fairly dumb, they deliver what they are asked to deliver. Besides the USB trigger devices, I don't own anything that uses a PPS mode.

Hello, got a weird question for you. I bought an asus Rog Flow Z13 device. Manufacturer says it will only charge with the full 100W if only it’s original charger is used and it limits every other usbc charger to 65W no matter how many Watts it can deliver. There is some hearsay going around that apples 140W charger can also deliver 100W to this device somehow! Is there any way to make sure that this is true without me buying one, and if so would you recommend this to me. Thanx a lot.

Oh, that is interesting. The cheapest way to check would be to get a USB tester (you do have to get one that supports the higher voltage (50V) and plug it in line with the Asus charger and observe the voltage supplied by the charger. If it goes up to 28V then a good bet any extended range power (EPR) adapter will work, if it instead increases current for additional power then it won't work and the Asus charger is proprietary. It's still the first one, it isn't the only one. The 70W charger is GaN also. I'm not sure on the others. The 140W apple charger is one of the better ones out there though mostly because it lasts longer.

The charger itself gets hotter since it has to deal with extra current. From any testing I’ve done the correlation to output from input is limited and depends on several factors. I have seen adapters with good and bad power factor both with good and bad outputs.

I charge through my usb c instead magsafe using apple TB4 cable. And the result show that only 60watt by AC charger information. I dont know what the problem is. Did you ever try this? I would like your explanation for my experience. Thanks..

The device ultimately decides how much power to use. There is also a cable limit. Some cables may not support 100W charging. Thunderbolt cables typically are rated for 100w. Apple may limit the charge on the USB C port though and that is probably the bottleneck.

@@adipop6880 Yeah, technically correct on the charging speed, at least during the fastest charging time period. The larger battery should be able to charge more quickly though so 100W versus 67W isn't a huge difference. I wouldn't expect any major change between using those two size adapters over time. The battery will degrade a little with every charge, if you charge it at 10 watts or 100 watts, the same problem happens. The best way to prevent degradation over time is to limit the charge and discharge amount. So, charge to 80% maximum and only discharge to 20% for example. Obviously, when more is needed a full charge once in a while doesn't hurt.

Which one is better for the health of the macbooks battery

Laptop batteries are pretty good size so there shouldn't be any health concern (beyond normal wear and tear of a charge cycle) charging a laptop battery with any of these charges. The smaller laptops won't take advantage of the charging speed of the larger chargers either, so the device will decide how fast it can charge. The larger mac book pro's have larger batteries and will take advantage of the 140W or 96W chargers.

I have realized that after plugging my new macbook pro (13 inch m2 2022) into the wall socket with it's original charger the surface of the laptop gives me an electrical "static" like feeling that isn't there when the device is not plugged in. I am living in Europe and using a converter to plug the charger, could that be causing issues?

Use the apple power extension cable, it grounds the adapter, also make sure your adapter has a connected earth pin.

I'd say the UGREEN is automatically out. The Anker is good if you are using with a macbook. The baseus is great for lower power devices. I worry about Baseus quality and therefore longevity. I'd expect the Anker to last the longest.

Sure! The apple adapters are fully power delivery compliant so support the PD modes and work with other equipment as long as you don't need PPS.

If I were to leave my Apple USB-C power adapter plugged in all day everyday for convenience: will the power adapter wear-out faster, than if I were to unplug it after each use? In other words, is there any technology inside the adapter that will degrade if I left it plugged in all the time?

Technically, yes. It is a switching power supply so it is turning on and off tens to hundreds of thousands of times per second. The components that tend to fail are the small capacitors that supply stand by power for that power supply. The good thing is that under light load the heat generated is very low so the components aren't hot at least. Many of these also implement a 'skip' feature so the switching will shut off for several cycles in low power mode. I'd weigh all of that against the stress of a cold start up condition, where there are large inrush currents and start up conditions, that may be worse than leaving it on, not to mention mechanical stress of plug and unplug everyday. I doubt anyone is going through the process these days, but there should be a curve of failure and an expected list of causes. I would expect idle condition to be very low on the list of causes, that standby capacitor is the trouble maker though. The demise is often that little few cent part of many a power supply.

haha, well the standards change depending on the parameter. Of course that part is fully opinion. The data is there for you to make your own choice! So, on opinions, an instant disqualification is the lack of a safety listing, doesn't matter how good the power supply is. Apple always checks this box. Next is a little more subjective, size/weight/features, and Apple is not packing the most into these adapters, but they are made for and fully compatible with Apple devices. Then is where the technical bits come in, the power quality thing. Apple consistently falls in the bottom of each grouping. Finally, output performance, Apple does okay here. Everyone seems to get a piece of each category but no one gets them all. Anker has safety, size, weight, features on their side but they choose with software to limit performance, then the voltages are generally out of specification on higher wattage devices... I mean it is a power supply and it doesn't do the one thing it is supposed to do so hard to call perfection on that. I have a lot of these tested, many that don't have videos, 100's, so I have a good idea of where adapters fall, and generally they fall on the side of built down to a price, even the ones that do the final piece: charge a premium price for an inferior product. Baseus holds the power quality for the 100W class but they have known quality control issues, they build in 10 different factories so although performance is good, you may not get the same build quality day to day. You could say it is the hunt for a perfect adapter...

The difference device to device is valid in the EU. The main result is that the performance shifts a bit. The efficiency can be higher but some of the other metrics get a little lower. In the end the general criteria is about the same though. I have begun testing more at the 230V 50Hz rating.

You can per the wattage, the phone decides how much power to use so it won't overload the phone or anything like that. I don't know what charging modes the phone actually uses, and of course, as most manufacturers, they don't tell you anything about the charging modes or compatibility, it has a USB C port though so got that much. I guess being an apple charger it would work just fine though. The only charger apple actually mentions is this one: "Testing conducted by Apple in August 2023 using preproduction iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max units and software and accessory Apple USB‑C Power Adapter (20W Model A2305). Fast‑charge testing conducted with drained iPhone units. Charge time varies with settings and environmental factors; actual results will vary."

Product dependent, yes. My laptop tops out at 67W in. For any of these if you use the USB C port on any (large enough) macbook they will top out at 100W without apples special magsafe cable.

@@AllThingsOnePlace But can the third party adapters like the 140W Baseus USB C adapter make my MBP 16" (2021) charge with full 140W via the USBC-Magsafe3 cable? The USB PD 3.1 which specifies the modes higher than 100W was announced in 2021 but Apple's own 140W charger can charge the 2021 Macbook from a USB C socket in an Apple 140W Charger with 140W if it's connected to Magsafe3 port on the Mac. So my question is did Apple use a draft USB PD spec to enable charging with 140W from their USB C charger or is Apple using a propietary protocol when charging the 16" Macbook Pro 2021 with 140W? If I purchase 140W Baseus charger, can it charge my Macbook via Magsafe 3 with 140W?

@ The point of the new 140w chargers with the EPR mode is to work with the Apple mag safe cable to be able to charge the laptop at faster than 100 watt speeds. The Baseus and the others are designed for this use. I don't have one myself so I haven't specifically tested the fast charging ability of various devices but I expect them to all be about the same.

Sorry I don't understand the numbers and stuff. Which should I get for my base macbook? Apple is providing 67W by default and I can upgrade to 96W. Fast charging is not a concern. Just want to minimize battery wear and tear.

If Apple provided the 67W and that is meeting your needs I'd stick with it. Unless you need a spare charger, then I would recommend going with at least the 96W size.

@@jshjx Yeah, on sale always changes the game. The apple 96W on sale isn't a bad idea. I've been daily driving the 165W for a bit now, it charges all my smaller devices fine. I have had it turn off power to the laptop twice. I purposefully had it set to stay on and it cut the power anyway, that may have also been the USB C to blue tip cable I was using (3rd party adapter).

@@Challengerlion Ah ha, no damage, since the device decides how much power to use, it will negotiate for what it needs and the power adapter will supply. Apple is pretty good about keeping the charging within a safe level for batteries.

While I like your videos and testing, from my own real world tests; people need to take your results with a grain of salt. Bottom line is stick with the well known brands and you will be fine. I've tested the anker 737 120w charger against the 67w apple charger and differences are minimal and to be expected from the difference in output. The latest macbook pro 14" only fully charges in 10 minutes less. It still charges to 40ish % in 30 mins and fully charges in just over 1.5 hrs.That's 67w vs 100w. I have also tested the ugreen cable vs anker...minimal difference if any. Will be doing more tests but people should just buy a known brand with he best current price. We'll see if the Baseus 100w tells a different story.

Absolutely. I focus on the efficiency of the device really, not the time to charge since really that's the device being charged decision. In general calculation is probably enough here if you know the charge curve shape of the device and what current it uses maximum during its constant current phase but yeah good luck getting those details. The final few percent of efficiency or energy cost most people don't care about.

@@AllThingsOnePlace Thanks for the reply. I agree that efficiency is important. Also, maybe i misunderstood the videos a bit, IDK. I have tested charging times a while back and equal rated chargers and got different results. I was always under the impression that the device controls charge behavior but I think the charger also plays a small role as well. I don't want to draw this out with details. From your response, I'm seeing that there is minimal difference because the device controls most of the charging habits. I got pretty much identical results from the Baseus 100w and anker 120w on my iphone 14 pro. I have seen a difference between anker cable and ugreen though but it could have been a glitch, idk. Anker charged identical until the last 2%, but Anker ened 3 minutes faster. Nothing to write home about. I do still enjoy your videos, keep it up👍

I had to go through 3 of 65w nano before switching to anker dual usb-c 65w charger. However if you want bang for the buck then apple adopters can outlast the laptops!

Ouch yeah, apples older designs do last but it almost exclusively has to do with oversizing the input electrolytic capacitance, which has an effect on efficiency I won't get into, unlike ultra compact adapters. Speculation after tearing a bunch of these apart: as the capacitors dry out the apple adapters have a longer usable lifetime versus a compact adapter with a lower starting value. Example, starting with 20 versus 10 then after 5 years one will be at 15 and the other will be at 5. 5 is too low for stable operation and it burns out...

It is sad that Apple introduced only one Apple USB-C GaN 140W charger. I thought that the Apple USB-C 67W would have GaN technology. Unfortunately I was wrong. As I calculated that Apple will gradually innovate and introduce more chargers with GaN technology. I thought that he would make a gradual upgrade, that the 61W adapter with silicon technology would be an upgrade to USB-C 67W GaN. So that GaN chargers will gradually become the standard at Apple over the years.

haha, well, the quality may be high, but it isn't the BEST. I kind of understand why though, they want these to last not necessarily be the best performance.
