Speaking about magic smoke, I just watched a Korean video that was eye opening: the guy wrapped cheap power supplies in towels while they were delivering their *rated* power. Some have thermal protection, so no harm done. The others started melting and I hate to imagine what could happen if left unsupervised. And it's not a completely unrealistic scenario, I've seldom connected my power supply to an extension cord while using my laptop in bed, with said power supply on top of the bed. I never let a blanket or whatever fall on top of it but that's not to say it couldn't happen. To someone. Somewhere. Once the magic smoke has left a capacitor, you can't put it back and I'm told that's pretty much the same with your fucking house. *Do not* let out the magic smoke of your house.

I thought the supercapacitor would charge quicker. 2 minutes seem like an eternity when you have shit to measure! The super capacitor should be hot swappable in V2. Power consumption: the Mytutoyo use WAY less current when off. They are also shipped with a better silver oxyde battery. Weirdly, my cheap chinese set of calipers use a lot less battery than others (like I don't replace it every year). No available rechargeable batteries: you could have stuck a AAA or CR2032 holder, soldered the leads and Bob's your uncle

Have you checked which capacitors Anker use in these units? Putting safety aside for a minute, would it make sense to drill ventilation holes in these cases? I remember when transformers (so, before the generalization of switch mode power supplies) had ventilation holes
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Күн бұрын
Drilling holes won't help, they fill these solid with glue. They're also so dense that holes would certainly expose something dangerous or break something. I have seen a few teardowns of the 'prime' anker series devices and looked up which caps they use and it's nothing premium. Even the early switch mode laptop adapters had ventilation, I have a 160W brick with a fan in it.
