But when news broke last week that AAPL was looking to partner with GOOG in AI, it definitely got an eyebrow raise from me. This looks more like caught with pants down than later but better. Apple A11 had .6 TFLOPS Neural Engine, A12/A13 5.4 TFLOPS, A14 11.6TFLOPS (M1), A15 15.8 TFLOPS, A16 17 TFLOPS, A17 (M3) 35 TFLOPS. The latest iteration is now 58x the original apple neural engine. With that said, inference on an a Mac Studio is usually done on the GPU not neural engine. It isn't fake, they've been doing neural engine work long before other laptop makers - having it on Mac laptops since M1. And the steady innovation has been there. But, they also are very behind NVIDIA on ML libraries and actual performance, and they are way behind other players in understanding LLM. But can we somehow understand a difference between NOTHING and all HYPE - which is not the case, they have a very real lineage and work in AI, and simply state the TRUTH, which is they fell behind and they are now playing catchup.

the biggest reason they fell behind is because they refuse to buy Nvidia tech. That was their mistake. for training models you have to go to Nvidia. Now they have no choice, not only they need Nvidia but Nvidia isn't the same company and will surpass Apple very soon in market cap. Jensen was praising the Apple Vision pro in an interview. I fully expect Apple to have spent like half a billion on Nvidia GPU's and now getting their act together. Nvidia are so far ahead with AI hardware that Apple would need more than a decade to create anything equivalent to blackwell

@@percy9228 I agree but in the context of this article, I will just add they are praising Microsoft for claiming from the get go that the new surface is AI enabled, when the thing impressing most viewers is they added a "button to the keyboard!!!", and an NPU that is of no particular importance today. Now Microsoft is plenty involved with AI with their partnership with OpenAI and Azure OpenAI is frankly good - but the point I'm making is, if one is selling consumer hardware, and looking at it from the angle of selling iPhones and Laptops, Apple can form partnerships and catch up. If looking at it from the perspective of a chipmaker, Apple is not behind Intel or AMD. But if looking at it from the perspective of a pure AI play - yes Apple is woefully behind, and not likely to catch Nvidia.

Inference is like you have the equation and just plug in the variables, very very simple compared to finding the equation (training). with the equation you can't do any inference... Nvidia is the hardware Apple needed to research and come up with equations. Apple refused to buy nvidia hardware and because of that , they never did much. They probably relied on creating their on training tech and got caught with their pants down when AI advanced so quick. apple will still work on their inference tech but they need hardware to train.

It's not all bad for Apple. Their Apple TV+ is making some impressive content as of late. Their ARM chips are actually really good. Apple vision pro is an amazing device compared to alternatives. They are a little with their pants down. But they have some much potential.

It seems the Engineering team misread Tim Cook's handwriting, thinking he wrote "A1 Steak sauce" instead of "AI". Apple has totally missed the boat. They can't buy their way out of this one. Open AI and Nvidia are streets ahead. Apple is a consumer electronics brand. Consumers are not paying big money for AI yet. Microsoft, the main owner of OpenAI, is a corporate IT provider. The corporates are putting huge money into AI. AI is software. Apple is terrible at software. Compare Microsoft Office with Apple Sheets, Apple Pages. Etc... failures by any measure.

I’m VERY bullish MSFT. Was 25% of my portfolio at one point. Satya Nadella is a genius. And yes, they are preparing the mop and bucket for a sloshing of the competition. (And not just in AI - they will squash the cyBErSeCUriTah names like a beetle.) That said, AAPL is the type of company that will pull an ace out of their sleeve, be it a revolutionary take on a product, or a reimagination of something that is commonplace.
