Apple TV: Can it Really Replace Sky Stream in 2023

I've ditched sky TV and gone broadband only, I'm now using my Apple TV, Shield TV our bill has gone from £117 a month to £35 a month. On the TV guide app, I wish it would be able to deep link even further so when you click on a channel it opens up the stream directly without the extra steps. Great video as always

In Poland it’s a lot more complicated. Terrestrial tv is a mess thanks to our authoritarian government. Also no television has an app that integrates with Apple TV app. That being said with Getflix I am able to use iPlayer ITV CH4 my5 on Apple TV using UK iTunes account. Problem is despite another iTunes account is treated just like another user profile Apple does not allow British apps to be connected in polish account in TV app. I hope this be addressed in tvOS 17. Also this would be cool if such guide be available inside TV app. That being said you are watching TV on wrong hour - 2 hours later on Channel 4 there is “Countdown” with lovely Rachel Riley :)

The wife’s finally decided it’s time to bin off Sky, so yesterday with 7 days left to go and thanks to you bigging up TV Launcher I pulled the trigger and bought the app. Really impressed with it, absolutely love the top shelf functionality as that’s just brings things to another level for sheer convenience. Lots of tweeks to be made such as channel preferences and regional settings are all great additions. One thing this apps also done it make me realise just how much content I do have access to without a sub as there’s a few apps I didn’t even think had free channels available.

went from virgin, to sky q, took the plunge to switch to stream and for my viewing habits etc, honestly i can't fault it yet. i know apples stuff is usually well thought out etc but i've never really taken a liking to my mates apple tv, and that tv launcher looks a bit too cheap, like one of those ropey android tv boxes folk would but to bang iptv on.

Great video, the TV guide is a game changer and only found out about it via your previous videos. Got stung by Sky price rises so cancelled and switched to Apple TV, works out to be cheaper and far more flexible for our viewing habits. Would never have cancelled and switched if it weren’t for your videos. We are using both sky Q and Apple alongside each other during final weeks of cancellation term and much prefer using Apple, it makes Sky feel very clunky! Definitely would recommend others switching especially if you can grab a Now TV discount so you don’t miss out on the Sky content you actually want.

Been an apple TV owner since 2012. I upgrade whenever a new one comes out. It's by far my favourite streaming device. Very slick, picture quality is fantastic and easy to use with different user accounts. As a box for ditching Sky, I'd probably say no. I'm still a big live TV watcher and as much as I could ditch sky tomorrow and save a lot of money, I just can't break that chain.....just yet.

Apple TV doesn’t record as everything is stored in the cloud so you watch. What you want when you want it. The TV Launcher is an app and it goes through your broadband.

Remember the TV Launcher just launched the app the program is associated so like BBC iPlayer is HD and ITV to my knowledge is and now is all HD as well.

New to your channel really enjoying it. I’m coming to the end of my BT contract and been looking at different ways to watch TV. My only problem with Apple TV and this method of watching TV, is that you have to search in the individual apps for a program that was earlier in the day or week, instead of being able to just select it from the TV guide as BT or SKY. Not a problem for me but the rest of the family just want to be able to select it from the guide and watch it. Which I can understand as it can be a faff in some apps.

No, the launcher opens the app but only what is showing on that channel at that time, not the program that was on in the past. You have to then search for the program manually.

Brill mate, been balls deal in the apple eco system, but just showed Ma your review & it convinved her. Only thing she doesn’t like is the wobbly highlight thing when you’re on the apple screens, are hard to use for boomers who are new to it…an outline on selected objects would help. Cheers mate.

Another great video Steve. I audited what channels I watch most a long time since and found many were available on Freeview. I unsubscribed from Sky although I am tempted by the Sky Stream box. I currently have a Nvidia Shield which is a beast of a box.

Yes it does but remember the more Wi-Fi enabled devices you have the more congested it can get unless you have Wi-Fi 6

@Dwayne Barker I pay £55 and that gives me sports (minus BT Sport), movies, ultra HD, multiroom. This then also includes Paramount Plus, Netflix in ultra HD and Discovery Plus. Basically a lot cheaper then having all those and Now TV, separately!

I have sky stream find it very buggy freezing and needing reboot, I like the Apple TV had now tv but I got rid because no 4k uhd support whereas sky stream does support 4k uhd and Dolby sound, now the Apple TV in general watching iTunes movies or likes of Disney the picture and sound is really good especially on surround sound system

It can only replace Sky Stream if it can allow full access to ALL Sky Sports & BT Sport channels in HD as well as Ultra HD...If only Apple TV; Sky Stream, also provided the means to directly & simply record like one can with Sky+; SkyQ; Virgin Media, and BT TV!....One day maybe? 😙

It was thanks to your reviews that made me switch from Sky Q to Sky Stream and I have zero regrets. I also have a Firestick 4K max and that’s a beast of a device for streaming too. I’m a huge Apple fan and was always put off with the Apple TV device due to how restrictive it is but this tv app is a game changer

I have ATV 4K, had it since Jan, have a problem with BBC IPlayer, you watch a program then another from the iPlayer the sound from the first program starts playing at the same time on my Sonos Beam, very off putting, I can pause the program but the sound is still coming through the speaker, the only way to resolve it is unplug the Beam & watch the program via the tv speakers, it only happens on the BBC IPlayer, I’ve rang Sonos they did diagnostic tests, said the beam is ok & it would be for Apple to investigate, all very weird, also Discovery plus, initially it put programs on UP NEXT now it doesn’t, don’t know how to fix that, other than that fine😮😮

We pay Sky £117 a month which is expensive, my contract end 26 June 2023, we very rarely use Sky Q now, I’ve subscribed to itvx & All 4, £80 a year, which is cheaper than Sky, trying to persuade the wife to ditch it them but she likes the way Q works, ie channels load instantly, but we don’t watch live tv just recordings ATV is very quick though, I’ve a few months to try & change her mind, ha ha

Winner, upon selecting ITV channels via TV Launcher they now open direct to the channel in ITVX rather than just stopping at the Live Channel selection area. 🥳

What’s the monthly subscription fee for the Apple TV for watching live tv? I am with virgin media and I own the 360 and I hate it plus virgins customers service is horrendous. I am thinking of going back to Sky but the Sky Q is quite expensive but Sky stream is kinda reasonable.

There isn’t one it’s a one off fee in the App Store it’s just a tv guide
