Apple Vision Pro has an identity problem

Apple has now released Vision Pro details including the release date and included accessories! But with this launch, there are some confounding details- Apple hasn't released much new information or any new footage/photos. This leads me to wonder if Vision Pro is having an identity crisis; what is it for? Who is it for? What can we do with it? These are all questions I thought we would have answers to by launch, but it seems a lot of learning will have to be done on the fly.

it doesn't matter AT ALL how much storage the Vision Pro uses. 256 is just a joke. There is no discussion. Its not like 512gb would cost them more than 10 bucks or something.

First gen is mostly for developers, when they come up with the first killer apps, and when the non-pro Apple Vision drops, I think sales will take off. I am convinced Apple is playing the long game here. They're expecting to take losses for at least the next couple years on this, but they think it's going to mature and there will be a market for it eventually. That being said, I really want one of these things. I want to experience the hype lol

I see a lot of similarities to the first iPhone: relatively limited quantities, only available in the US to begin with, everyone's saying how "ridiculously expensive" it is. I suspect the price will come down quite quickly as they manage to scale production. I wouldn't be surprised to see up to a $500 reduction on the first model within a year, and I think the next pro model, up to two years from now, will stay at that price, but be way better, and I think there will be a lower model that is quite similar to the original but a lot cheaper, maybe $2,000-2500.

@thebuddercweeper
@thebuddercweeper 4 ай бұрын
If you bought the original 64GB SSD MacBook Air, accounting for inflation, even after the price was reduced the first time, it would have cost more than Vision Pro. First generation devices are expensive - the first iPhone cost over $1,000 of 2007 money if you include the (mandatory) contract and not just the upfront cost, which is even more in 2024 money. I'm pretty sure 99.9% of users didn't buy an original iPhone either. Apple will continue to scale the production of the Vision line, the micro OLED displays will get cheaper, new models will come out, old models will be reduced in price, and inflation will continue to be a thing. Eventually, in 3-5 years, we'll probably end up with something that solves most of the first generation problems and costs around $1,500 or so of today's money, which is still quite a bit but not unreasonable for what it is.

As a devoted fan of Apple for 45 years and counting, the VP is probably the first product from the company that I consider ”a-solution-looking-for-a-problem”… As far as I can remember, every new product Apple had introduced over the years addressed a certain need that wasn’t readily available by other venues (even one that promised a simple concept like the AirPods ditching wires). I’m not a gamer, and I’m totally satisfied with my Mac workstations and my existing home theater setups. My previous experiences with VR/AR glasses had been mostly a familiar one of excitement over novelty items that rapidly wore off, and so far I’m not convinced the VP will address an issue that makes me go “WoW, I really need that!”… For the time being I’ll wait for a meaningful application for VPs to emerge?

If any of you remember, when the original iPhone came out in 2007 Apple ditched the 4GB model within a few months and discounted $200 off the only available other model which was 8GB. Everyone who initially bought the 8GB model for $600 dollars got a $200 dollar apple gift card. I still have that original 2007 iPhone 8GB model that I used without any type of case and the original box. I don't think it turns on anymore because the battery is so old. I plan on buying the VisionPro 512GB or 1TB when it goes for preorder. It really isn't that expensive, the last MacBook Pro 16" M1 I bought was over $3K. I can see using the VisionPro at home for work, having numerous "screens" open in it and still using my Apple Touch ID with Keypad keyboard and mouse. I won't have all the clutter of multiple monitors, and when I am done I can just put it away and no hardware to look at. I also will pair a PS5 controller for light game use. I also am intrigued by the full immersion of watching a movie with an enormous screen and using AirPods Pro2 with it.

@BrinkWeb
@BrinkWeb 4 ай бұрын
I've never had corrective glasses, but I was thinking the same thing. The OS could have a setup wizard similar to eye doctors to find the right config and act as a filter. I bet there are legal issues and would need to certify it as a medical device preventing this feature. Next gen will have it.

@jpanet
@jpanet 4 ай бұрын
I know this is a late reply but the reason why the VP and no other VR headset have variable built-in corrective lenses is that unlike a camera viewfinder where you are looking through it for short periods of time, a VR headset will be looked at for extended periods of time. VBC lenses are very inexact, and very difficult to calibrate fully. This will lead to a consistent inconsistency in corrective abilities, which will essentially be like looking through incorrect prescription lenses for hours at a time. This is very bad for your eyes, can worsen vision, and will never be as good as regular corrective lenses. It also adds a lot of weight, cost, and unnecessary complexity to a headset which is already well pushing it on all of those factors. These reasons are why no other VR headset (despite years of research into its application) no matter how fancy and expensive have these. Fixed corrective lenses will always be safer, more precice, provide better clarity, reduced weight, and lower costs. Cheers!

For a lot of us, this will be, for the next couple of years at least, something we'll only experience in the confines of the Apple Store (assuming their sanitation is up to snuff, which I sincerely hope is the case). It’s interesting that you need more storage on your computer vs. phone. For me I use my computers exclusively in WiFi range at home or office and use iCloud and really don’t need a lot of internal storage. On my phone it’s a portable device always on the move and I want my photos and videos with me at all times

I'm excited to use the VP for school. I get that it's total overkill but I can run everything I need for my classes on it, and I'll have total immersion into my work to keep my ADHD-prone mind focused. Also, content consumption as a whole seems like a huge area of strength for the VP. I can see social media and gaming being areas of development with large interest in the near future. This purchase will be my first step into AR/VR, but tbh I've been waiting for Apple to give their take on it before I invested anyway.

People literally said the same thing about the iMac (fruity), iPod (expensive and over engineered), iTunes (no one's going to pay for digital music), iPhone (3x as expensive as Blackberry with no keyboard?!), iPad (feminine hygiene name, just a giant iPhone), and Apple Watch (people already have FitBits, it's something only nerds would wear). It's the 1st generation, there is plenty of time for people to wrap their heads around this. It's a computer. That's what it is, a computer with a revolutionary display and input method. Other headsets like Quest are more like gaming consoles, with gaming-centric UIs, input methods, and social interactions. Yes, apps will take time to be optimized. Early on, many will be giant iPad apps, just like early iPhone apps looked like web apps and early iPad apps looked like blown up iPhone apps. Even Apple's own software will take time to take advantage of these new paradigms. But personally, that's exciting to see it all unfold. People will use Apple Vision Pro for computer things: productivity, communication, entertainment, and general life stuff like photos, messages, and spatial home videos. It's super clear to me! :)

So...if I get one, and my wife gets one, then that's $10,000 Canadian. Ouch. Difficult to justify this expenditure!! There are definitely some applications where virtual environments are going to shine - AR for interior design and architecture, for example, and 3D prototype modelling just to name a couple. Looking forward to the Really Big Things.

Compaired to the other headsets out there it's pretty sleek, has extra features, the screen quality and resolution seems a lot better. But it seems to me like Apple showing off tech and what they can do at this moment. Tech that hasn't evolved enough to be truly revolutionary (you're still basically wearing a heavier version of a ski mask on your face). Plus it costs a fortune - but it's a step forward and Apple are the one's doing that. It's more of a PR statement than a viable product in it's current form/price.

Apple will probably do what Meta and Sony have done and make the box as the storage case as most VR Headsets do both my Quest 3 and my Playstation VR2 both have their boxes both double as storage cases and I would like your thoughts on how it can stack up to Meta's Quest 3 as the Quest 3 can also be used with the Mac as I use it nearly everyday with my MacBook Pro and it can also be used either PC or Mac and Apple's Headset can't so spending that type of money on a Apple only device is a bit crazy as most of its 3rd party apps will be Quest 3 Mixed Reality app ports

First and foremost, the Vision Pro is not intended for the average user, so saying that it is too expensive for the average user is not relevant. Back in 2007 when Jobs demoed the first iPhone, people were wowed by the technology but at $499 and $599 and with a two year AT&T contract, it was way too expensive the average user considering that most other cell phones at the time were well below $200. Even the lates Blackberry was $199 on contract. However the 2007 iPhone wasn't just a phone, it was a gateway technology. I don't think many predicted how the mobile phone would have evolved over the last 17 years. I have no idea if the Vision Pro will be the same kind of gateway but I am looking forward to see what it can do and will do in the future. Just like the iPhone in 2007 wasn't just a phone, the Vision Pro isn't just a VR headset.

@@DickDawsonTheShills I don't think there's much they could remove from the main unit. All the sensors, the body, the display all need to be there by definition. The M2 and R1 chips need to be there because putting them further away would introduce latency, which you can't really afford a device meant to be so *immediate*. About the only thing they could store separately would be the SSD, but that weighs next to nothing and would mean you couldn't just swap batteries without swapping the storage.
