My old 2012 MacBook Air I got for uni is still kicking around as a backup device, works for Chromebook like tasks absolutely fine, although it is an i7 with 8gb which probably helps. When windows 10 support ends for boot camp it’ll probably become a Linux machine to see how many more years it can have

I have an early 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with the 10th-gen i7 quad-core processor and 16GB of RAM, which I got for free. It runs great and performs smoothly, but my main critique is its battery life. It doesn’t compare to the efficiency of the M1 or newer chips, and it tends to get quite warm even during relatively simple tasks. That said, I love using Bootcamp to run Windows 10 on it for some light gaming, as well as running CAD software and legacy music notation software that are only available on Windows. While I still need the MacBook, I find myself primarily using my 11-inch M1 iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard as my main “computer” in class. The M1 iPad is quieter, more efficient, and much better suited to my realistic daily needs. The Apple Pencil is also incredibly useful for writing, annotating PDFs, and having professors or others sign documents directly on the iPad. I personally recommend finding the best deal you can on a used Apple Silicon machine with at least 16GB of RAM to future-proof for Apple’s growing focus on AI and machine learning. For my desktop setup, I use an M1 Mac Mini with 16GB of RAM, and I feel it will stay relevant for quite a while. I do not feel the same about 8GB machines.

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro Retina running the latest Mac OS. I have been converting all my DVDs to MP$ using WinX DVD Ripper for Mac and adding them to my Plex server with great success. Can you tell me how I can do this with my Blu Ray DVDs? I know I need a Blu Ray drive and maybe some new software, but have read many mixed reviews if this is possible on a Mac.

Yep, I am a die hard Mid 2012 2.7Ghz wth 1TB SSD and max'd RAM user!! Apart from the one vertical line on the high resolution screen showing up, the WiFi being temperamental and the SD card reader not working I am still running Catalina as well as it has ever done. The DVD drive still works too. I still run Mavericks on a partition as well. Just love that OSX. This was Apples best for sure. Mybe one day I might upgrade to the mid 2012 Retina model.

I love my 2015 15". It's still going strong to this day on Monterey, I got it to replace my 2013 13" that I bought new. It is definitely getting long in the tooth at this point though, I think within this year it'll have to get replaced. The fact the design is as old as it is and still looks like it could have came out yesterday is insane to me. Think of what a laptop that came out 13 years before this body style launched looked like, it would be from 1999! Thinking of using a computer from 1999 in 2012 was insane as well, yet here we are 13 years later and the machine is still more than capable of meeting most peoples needs.

I still use my late 2012 macbook pro that I bought new back then. Upgraded the Ram to 16 GB and switched the hdd to an ssd and it‘s running pretty well with oclp. Last year I bought a 2013 imac 21,5“ for less than 100€, also upgraded the Ram to 16 GB and the hdd to ssd and use it as desktop pc. And couple months ago while on the hunt for a 11“ macbook air I accidentally bought a 2011 13“ macbook air. I use that too as my backpack laptop with oclp and mac os 14 it‘s running surprisingly smooth even with just 4 GB of ram. Was shocked last week at the electronics store to see that not even new macbooks come with 16 GB of ram stock so 🤷🏽‍♂️

Say what you want about the Windows Co-Pilot key on the keyboards, but it is useful. I always press that whenever I have a question or need help with writing something instead of googling it.And it's powered by Chat-GPT. Aside from that, I hated Windows OS, so I am sending this laptop back and getting an M3. But I think Apple should implement just a simple chat-get powered app like that.

I have a feeling they killed off the 27" iMacs because of cost. Those 5K panels aren't cheap and given how few exist on the market even now despite a small batch of new ones coming to the market, they're still not exactly cheap. There are kits out there to convert them into dedicated monitors if you want to go that route, but they're only a finite supply. I'd really love to see them release an iMac Pro which is basically the Mac Studio inside the Studio Display lol. I think that might be more likely than just a "regular" 27" iMac with the Pro chips like many wanted and expected. Myself included. I just replaced my old 2013 27" iMac with a Studio Display hooked up to my M3 MacBook Pro, it was supposed to be a stop gap while I can then save up for a Mini M4 Pro but it's performed admirably so maybe I can just save the pennies lol.

So what about Apple desktop computers? What are the cheap or inexpensive options for that? Maybe someone like your grandmother that always is using the laptop at one place could also use an inexpensive Mac Mini or something like that.

It is pretty unfortunate that you need to go this old for a good experience on a decently cheap MacBook. A MacBook from the butterfly times is probably better than the Retina MacBooks in most ways as long as you don't do to intensive work and don't choose the highest processor like the Intel i9. But that keyboard is just a so bad and unreliable that it's just unfortunately a bad option when everything else is probably really nice for a simple user. If I could find that generation for cheap I might bought it if the keyboard was not that bad. Even when I don't use Apple products at all

I'm a diehard, I've been using my tricked-out 2012 MBP for live music performance nearly seven years now. It's currently running Sonoma (by choice, not all of my music stuff runs on Sequoia yet) and I use Ableton, Logic Pro, MainStage and a host of heavy-duty music plugins with no issues...except it has slowed down noticeably after the Sonoma upgrade. I absolutely love my old rig (and my CheeseGrater Mac Pro, too!) - but it feels like I'll have to replace them both with Silicon soon. I'll miss them both terribly...

I refuse to buy expensive electronics on eBay. I had a very bad experience with some electric scooters that were advertised in the listing as new and they sent me a used “refurbished” scooter that had all kinds of issues, I returned it and they promised to send a new one and I had gotten a refurbished by mistake and guess what they sent me again? Another used refurbished scooter. I returned it and made a claim with eBay about their listing and eBay refunded me and next I checked the listing it was gone, eBay had taken it down. And then the issue with scalpers, and other scams such as this videos content. It all just proves that eBay is not a trustworthy source for electronics at all.

I use a 2011 17” for iTunes specifically, upgraded to 16gb ram and a 512gb ssd. It’s very usable still and likely overkill for iTunes. My main is a 2019 15” i7 I got in a trade. And I have Windows 10 on it too. It runs some games pretty well too.

11" inch MacBook Air is imo the absolutely as down the bottom as you could go now, while still more or less usable) Back in a day those used to have, like, unrivaled perfomance/portability, and even today it still could pass as a no weight/no sweat daily driver MS Office machine👍 And the replacement battery with good reviews is like 25 bucks on Ali✨ Oh well, now it's like I want one..) ANd the Retina 13, too😄 Play around a bit, just to remember those 'good ol days' I was daily driving MacOS on my "cheesegrater" Pro =) And then it all went to crap, stuck without upgrades for like a decade, all those "darkest days" until M-chips emerged, and voila you could finally do video on a Mac again, without selling your kidney to get a capable machine, but I'm deep into Windows workflow now, no switching anymore🤷‍♂ Such a nostalgia moment tho, thanks for the video!

With the transistion to Apple sillicon the life span change drastically like the m1, typical a 4/5 year macbook air would be obvious with an intel chip. this is also prove with the weird intel chip macbook air of the same year, with its bluetooth air cooling but because Apple Silicon is much more capable the life span is longer than typical

The screen on my 2014 MacBook Pro cracked, and the battery was dead, but everything else was in good condition. However, it wasn’t worth replacing the screen and battery, so I repurposed it as a headless file server, running directly on power.
