Things purchased to build the Chatelaine:
Chatelaine chain- Signofthegreyhorse on Etsy etsy.me/1QWiU2M
Apple Watch- Apple Watch 3 (GPS/38mm), black, second hand
(Do not get the newer version because most of the new bells and whistles only work on the wrist, so if you will only be using it as a pocket watch or chatelaine it would be a waste of money.)

The chatelaines made me remember an odd item in my granny's purse. She has this key chain with several small chains that holds (besides her keys): a small scissors, a denin envelope with a couple of needles, black and white thread and a couple of buttons, a pocketknife, a small fork and a small spoon. She calls it her "low cost swiss army knife" and she always hangs this key chain on her purse. As a joke I asked her for one of those to have in in my backpack in college, she gave me one, you don't have idea how usefull was back then! Many emergencies where solved thanks to my grandma's key chain XD

So cool! These remind me of the chains of little personal tools viking women attached to the broaches that pinned to the sides of the fronts of their dresses (about at the place where overalls buttons would be). They served a similar purpose of being both ornamental (some were highly decorated with beads, precious stones or metalwork), and useful in keeping small and often-accessed tools at hand. It hadn't occurred to me that there was a more recent equivalent, and attached to the belt is arguably more wearable in modern attire. I might need to design a modern version for myself to keep ready those little things that I need all the time but constantly sink to the bottom of my purse.

Exactly what I was reminded of as well! I read about them briefly once and they sounded really fun and useful! Would you perhaps remember if they have a specific name or term that would make it easy to look up? I’d like to do some research and maybe recreate a chatelaine for myself in a more norse style 😁 Edit: I’ve found some good reference photos myself! ^^ I looked up “Viking chatelaine” and that worked well enough lol

My "Key chain" which actually hangs off my belt loop, is a large Carabiner, with smaller carabiners hanging off it that carry various things that are useful in my weekly life. I have my keys, house and car on separate, a bottle opener, a mini multi-tool, eyeglass screwdriver, hair ties, and a couple of thumb drivers. It's not fancy, nor even vaguely historical, but I think it's a modern equivalent. After watching this, I may have to add my Pokemon Go watch! And it certainly announces my presence!

Love it! I have something similar. I'm an eyeglass wearer. Before eyeglasses with arms to go over the ears became common men would have retractable chain brooches that their glasses or magnifiers would hang from. I got so excited when I read about that. I have this weird thing going on where I don't need glasses anymore for reading or close up work but I do for things that are a few feet away. Now I have my glasses dangling from a modern retractable lanyard when I read or handsew. It makes me feel so old-fashioned.

This is crazy! I'm in the ADHD community. As ADHD'ers, many of us are known for losing everything that's not physically attached to our bodies. I have ADHD friends who've come up with exactly this solution to solve that problem! They'll wear keys and similar on chains on their trousers, and you can always hear when they're approaching from the cling clang of the items I can't believe that it's not just something we've come up with to manage our ADHD, but something that actually has a name and has existed for centuries! That's wiiiild! I can confirm that it's extremely practical and functional Thank you so much for sharing!

The mention of how the jingle of a chatelaine announces a woman's presence to the room makes me think of Victorian novels where a character's entrances and exits from scenes get announced by the smell of her perfume, the rustle of silk, etc. It's funny how you don't really see consciously taking up space as a prominent element of feminine dress anymore. The only modern equivalent of that "hello, I am a woman in this space, you WILL notice me" vibe I can think of is heels, and even then the sensible (and quieter) flat has taken over in a lot of places where heels used to be de rigueur. Also, unrelated, that blouse is INCREDIBLE, oh my gosh.

This is so cool! It was really interesting to watch. Something I thought of during the video is the punk waist chain, that people who wear alternative, punk and goth fashions often wear. Often in these chains there's a big circle ring near the clasp that's bigger the rest of the chain. That would be a neat place to hang a chatelaine from, and maybe another way to merge it with more modern outfits.

However my summer canvass gardening skirt which is 20 years old and has deep pockets in which a pair of scissors live is my daily garb in the woods ideal for cutting briars that threaten to entangle. So glad someone is telling people to stop spending on tatt. The planet can't afford it.

My modern adaptation of this is putting things on carabiners that I either clip to my belt loop or my belt pouch's belt, if I'm not wearing something with a belt loop. And yes, with keys for 7 buildings hanging from my belt on one side and my car key and fob hanging on the other side, everyone hears me coming!! The rest of the stuff I use for work is crammed in the pockets of my cargo pants into specific pockets so I always kno where to look: mini flashlight, drywall knife and folding knife in one hip pocket, vinyl gloves in the other hip pocket, my smartphone, a notebook, pen, sharpie and any receipts I accumulate go in one thigh pocket and the multi-screwdriver, extra driver bit set, and mini first-aid kit go on the other. Occasioanlly I'll add something like a measuring tape or stud finder or granola bars (gotta have snacks!), but that makes extra bulk so I only grab those if I think I or my partner who doesn't wear pockets are going to need them. When I have to take off my wristwatch and rings for safety reasons, they go on one of the extra carabiners on my beltpouch.

I actually have a necklace version of a Chatelaine for when I'm fishing with my Granddad's gear. It carries everything I need to fish while standing in the middle of a living river - line clippers, plyers, Granddads' pocketknife, a pinable foam sheet that carries the hand-tied flies, and a whistle (sound travels better than yelling if I get into a spot of trouble). Really simple construction - leather strip with a sheet of foam wrapped around one end to be easy on your neck. The slide clips (I don't know their proper name, but you use them to link your lure to your line; it's kind of a quick release thing...) - they're suspended on the leather, spaced apart by large purple beads. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

What a wonderful idea. These are so useful. They remind me of when I worked as a veterinary nurse and we used a carabiner to hold bandage scissors, stitch cutters, nail trimmers, and then had necklaces with clocks for heart rates. I had forgotten about these until I saw your video. I would recommend these to nurses anywhere, but now you have opened my eyes to putting something together for my everyday life. Thank you for doing this series.

Chatelaines always remind me of nuns. The head nun at my school wore on filled with keys and a note book and pen attached. We didn't know what it was called but we could hear her coming!

I'm obsessed by chatelaines. When I became a housekeeper and manager for airbnbs I had so many keys! I made a modern chatelaine of a bunch of tiny carabiners on a chain but I want scissors and some more aesthetic look to my chatelaine.

I adore this, it is something I have been kicking around for a couple of years. Remixing it is really appropriate since the late 19th century revival of the medieval chatelaine was a fashion fad, and there was an arms race on how much stuff folks could put on one! A Victorian charm bracelet.

Ancient scandinavian women (the head of the household) wore their keys/small tools on thier belts as well! Crazy how things like this travel across cultures and time. 🖤

This looks so much more elegant than my clip-on-belt tool bag 🤩 I'm also very impressed that You found a key extender with strong enough wire to entrust your keys to it (after a few snapped on me with just the weight of ID card I gave up on them).

Two of my favorite KZbin historians in one video?? About one of my favorite historical fashion items??? Hell yeah!!!! Edit: I just finished the video! Your chatelaine turned out beautifully, and I really admire your philosophy and approach to collecting, trading, and refurbishing items for your projects! Absolutely amazing 💙

I adore this. They definitely need to make a comeback. I have a necklace from my grandmother that almost exactly matches the pattern on the top of the chatelaine, except silver.

OMG! I need a chatelaine in my life! ASAP! This is the best idea I have seen in a long time! It will definitely make up for the tinny pockets or the lack of those in our today clothes. A must for me will have to be a lip balm, sanitizer and maybe cuticle oil. I just love this idea! I can't get over it! 😍😍😍 I need to figure out a way to diy it. I have soo many things in my house that could work, definitely going to be looking how it's made so I can work around it and make one.
