Apple Watch Series 4 Hermès Review: From a Marketing Pro's Perspective

I bought this a few days ago at a Hermes store in Paris and it's quite different there because you are actually able to just buy the Apple Watch Hermes with just the sport band. They have there own price for it (stating it at around € 950,- on the invoice and around € 400,- for the band in my case) and then you can buy bands for it additionally. So from a packaging perspective it's quite logical to have the bands always in extra boxes. One detail you may have missed is that the back of the Watch case actually states that it's the Hermes Edition which is a nice touch (so the difference between the normal stainless steel model and the Hermes is more than just software). It would have been nice though if they changed the color of the red ring around the crown to Hermes orange instead of leaving it red.

I bought the 40mm double tour strap model this week as a birthday present to myself. The quality of the strap is excellent, so soft and supple, although the strap itself is quite small. I have small wrists and I have it fastened on the very last hole, which still makes it a snug fit. (I’d recommend trying one on before purchasing the double tour strap) I upgraded from the 3 series gold aluminium model, and the difference in quality of the SS finish of the watch itself is very noticeable. Super happy with my watch!

People, male and female, gain confidence from the material. We do not walk around naked and we do not ride horses for primary transport. That said, people (you, me and everyone reading this) will look at you differently based on your clothes, the car you drive and the neighborhood you live in. These are just facts of life. You can then say, well I surround myself with people that don't do that. You would be a liar to yourself and/or your friends would be liars to you. You are being judged, good or bad. If I bought this watch, which I'm actually in the market for, it would be a status buy. If someone notices, great. If not, also great. It would be a personal status buy. I don't much care how people feel about me. I care how I feel about myself.

Lawrence Brown I know that people will look at you differently based on your clothes. The trick is not to give a damn. I use public transportation and avoid expensive fashion brands despite the fact that I can very well afford them. I enjoy technology so I have indeed ordered an Apple Watch Series 4 and an Iphone XS but not because they ”give me confidence”. My confidence come from being good at what I do.

I have just upgraded from series 2 to series 4. My series 2 was less than 2 years old and the difference in speed is unreal. In a year and a half this Hermes watch will feel old and slow compared to the latest release. So is it worth dropping so much on this? It's not THAT different to any other apple watch offering.

I bought standard one and love it, i will get the Hermes Apple Watch 6 next time with same strap, his followup 19 months later helped me choose, I have tag link now for over 15 years and can relate to the strap. also when I was younger I had basic wrangler jeans but with a bally belt made it feel so much better. pity he didn't talk about the watch 5 as always on now and shows off the watch face

The separate boxes and watch face are all about inventory and distribution. They can more easily match bands to watches and also save on the effort of assembly. When a new watch comes out the following year, they can just pack the straps with the new watch.

Hi. I thought I would update you on my purchase. After much deliberation I did buy the 44mm Hermes with a Fauve Barenia leather strap. Being honest, for the first 14 days it remained pretty much in its box as I was in two minds on keeping, or returning it due to the high cost of this watch in the UK. But the thing that swung it was the fact it looks as close to a watch with the Hermes watch face as you can get. I am a traditional watch person (Rolex , IWC and a very old Omega). But having the Hermes face makes me want to wear the watch, as a watch. I also love the understated self knowledge that I am wearing something slightly different, and that is worth the extra cost for me. If I told my friends they would think I was crazy, but I guess I like that as well. Thanks once again for your review. It was the one that made me make the leap of faith into buying this watch and I am not disappointed.

Nice review. imo the Hermes version isn’t worth the price since the body is the same as a stainless steel version. The scratch resistant materials gave the edition more value imo. I think apple should offer a better trade in program for those buying into the high end. Once you pay $1299 for the highest quality, you should receive Apple Care and be able to trade in and upgrade to the next Apple Watch for slightly less. Half off upgrades and AC would really entice would be Edition/Hermès buyers to enter the club.

I returned it for another which is on its way... and I can only hope it doesn't have the same issue.

Hi Chris, I enjoy watching this video and I think your analysis is spot on for me, I m not into fashion and brands but this watch catches my attention, unfortunately the multi-color band I want is unavailable in my town at the moment, so I can have a moment to re-think if I should really pursue this one, may I know how’s your experience after 1 month? Is it still the right time to get it now? (Apparently the product life cycle is 12 months and now 1/8 has already been passed lol) The local stores here say if I want to have the multi-color 44mm band I would have to wait 7-8 weeks, I would think when I get it at that time the product is much closer to its end of PLC...so I am looking at the single color band right now if I want to get one this month. It does bring more people to the Hermès website. I bought a couple of their men's polo shirts online, and liked the quality and color selection so much, I retuned to buy four more. A little expensive, but not outrageous. Their leather goods are very expensive, but the quality is superb.

It's the original package of the bands, you can buy seperately. So the Nr. 1 reason, they deliver watch and band seperated, is, it's easier to get the various combinations ready..

It comes in two boxes as a supply chain thing. At the apple store and hermes they will always have the bands you want on hand instead of having watches with bands people don't want so they have difficulty selling them. They only need one model and then a bunch of bands in stock. Instead of having like 6 different models at once.

Bought the Apple Hermes series 2 and this latest series. The first was a mistake as they came out with cellular on series 3. My wife loves this one. Both our Rolexes have been in the drawer since we got the very first gen Apple Watch. My wife has no interest in jewelry other than her Hermes Apple Watch. Both the watches and IPhones are now so good, there is no longer any need to get new ones. We consider her Hermes a piece of jewelry. In three years, she will wear it every single day, or about 1100 days. An expensive piece of jewelry, is worn occasionally, and will never come close to being worn 1100 times. On a cost per time worn, the Hermes is a bargain piece of jewelry. The funny thing is, my wife is very frugal, always buying everything on sale. Her two exceptions, Hermes watches and Louis Vuitton handbags. We can’t afford Hermes handbags. To those that argue, the piece of gold jewelry will have a good resale value, good luck with that.

Best review on this, I think the new packaging out-of-the-gate reinforces the idea that this is a modular product opposed to a fixed model. From the included sport band (even though not new) to the other awesome Hermes bands, it sort of reminded me to go ahead and get two other Hermes straps as well lol. From a marketing stand point I could use more lush packaging but from an environmental one I appreciate the new modesty. Now to my real question, where did you get your messenger bag/brief, I had a two-tone messenger bag like that lost it and can't find another.

Great analysis. I bought the Hermes 40 mm double tour and I am so pleased with the quality of the leather and the general feel of the watch. I have since "retired" my Rolexs for now...I do agree though- that the packaging is disappointing but the product itself exceeds expectations. I do think that Hermes should have had a few more add-ons vis a vis the watch face itself so as to customize it further given the price point.

I don't have an Apple Watch yet because it looks cheap. I have a collection of watches and putting that electronic device among them is just unfair. But I need the features of an activity watch, my iPhone X has a folio from LV, very discreet with no big logos on it. I will bite the cheaper version and I am going to look for a leather strap separately. From the marketing point of view you might be right. I just do not want to throw 1,500 dollars into obsolescence a year from now.

Nice analysis. I had just about the same thoughts. Apple pushed hard for the fashion aspect with the original watch and it gained them a lot of free marketing in markets Apple products wouldn’t normally be in. I would add one thing, it gets Hermes customers in apple stores also. Just like people feared buying a Mac, something new to learn other then windows computers. Then the phone was released and people realized it was easy to use. That changed peoples thought and fears of buying a Mac realizing they are not that hard to use also. I thought about the Hermes, I wish they released it with Black SS. My originally (series 0) is a steel and I can see the scratches, it still works today. The series 3 was a black SS and hides the scratches a lot better. So I bought the series 4 black SS Cell sport and paired it with the black leather loop. As for the packaging, every Steel Watch has been in a bigger case it could be stored in when your not wearing it. I was sort of disappointed in the box for every watch this year. It still comes with the steel/chrome back to the charger but that’s the only difference in the packaging. I guess I should be glad I still have two storage boxes from the other steel watches I have for storage. I do wonder when the battery will give out, that’s the big difference from my other watches. Or if Apple will change the band attachment one year just to sell more watch bands again? I am glad they didn’t change it this year.

The Tag Heuer is a quality deployant clasp? I think your exposure to high-end watches is limited. If you really want to see a nice one, look at Vacheron, or even JLC or IWC. Tags are cheap stamped metal.

I think the series 4 will be fine in a couple years. Espeically since it a big leap design and spec wise from the series 3. If you haven't noticed, it's the first 1 to 3 versions of an apple product that end up aging the worst with the least support in the long run. For reference, see how long they supported the original iphone compared to how long they have been supporting the iphone 5s.

I think you're right. I bought the series 2 Hermes when it was released. The new color block faces aren't available for series 2 even after the watchOS 5 update, which annoyed me since the watch was nearly $2K and is only 2 iterations old. More importantly, the watch didn't retain much value. I opted for the gold aluminum series 4 this time instead.

Hahahaha My question to you all that are high end watch aficionados like myself is if this is very stylish and essentially nice looking?If it is, then I will purchase it but if not then I’ll spend my money on a high traditional high end time piece like a movado or another TAG HAUER. Edit: I buy high end luxury traditional watches and I really like the luxury aspect of this. The bands are nice but what I really am drawn to the exclusive watch faces since they are minimalistic.
