Apple Watches have consistently been amongst the best watches when it comes to accurately tracking your health and sports. But, how does the Apple Watch Series 8 stack up against the competition after 5 months of testing? In this video I’ll be sharing a scientific review of the Apple Watch 8 based on a lot of data. Over these past few months, I’ve thoroughly tested the Apple Watch Series 8, collecting data from 139 workouts, 60 nights of sleep, 84 GPS tests, and 2 tests of low oxygen saturation, to give you a comprehensive look at the sports and health tracking capabilities of the Apple Watch Series 8. On this channel I do not focus on features and looks, instead, we'll be focusing on what really matters to many of you - the accuracy and reliability of the measurements that the Apple Watch 8 takes. I’ll systematically analyze all the data I collected. We will compare 60 nights of sleep data from the Apple Watch 8 to that of an EEG device which can actually measure brainwaves, and we’ll compare the heart rate measurements of the Apple Watch to an ECG device. Next, we will be checking if the GPS signals are consistent and we will also test the Apple Watch in a low oxygen environment. This information should help you determine whether the health tracking features of the Apple Watch Series 8 are suitable for your personal needs. It is worth mentioning that while the Apple Watch 8 lived up to my expectations in many ways, there are a few crucial aspects where it actually showed some problems that I have not covered in my earlier videos. I was able to unravel these issues because I updated the computer code I use in my analysis, allowing me to better judge the performance of the Apple Watch Series 8. So sit back, relax, and let's dive into this scientific review of the Apple Watch.

Series 8 also has the problem of delayed heart rate shown on the screen. I’ve compared it with my chest strap during cycling, but it is still extremely accurate! Though having “short” battery life, but it only takes about 20min to charge from 20% to 80%🎉 Worth the price.

Hi Rob, Thank you for posting all these video’s about fitness trackers, very useful info! However I have a bit of a strange use-case. See I’m a pilot currently flying unpressurized aircraft sometimes with supplemental oxygen. I currently use a finger-type-pulseoxi-metre. However I find this quite cumbersome, sometimes annoying and unreliable. Hence I’ve been looking at smarts-bands (because I already wear a mechanical watch that because of sentimental reasons is quite near and dear to me) as convenient alternatives to work at a glance. I’d love continuous monitoring and an alert if levels reach dangerously low levels. However I have trouble finding such a product. They all seem to monitor at intervals or during sleep. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks in advance and please keep up the great work! -Chris

This channel is amazing for benchmarking and I fully intend to buy the top performing tracker based on your independent benchmarking: on gps tracking I'm interested if you've considered comparing pace shown on a watch v true pace? It would make your gps tracking section more applicable as it is a key performance metric for runners/cyclists who may not be only interested in the primary gps accuracy. Just a thought! Love the channel

Thanks again for the new review Rob. Very nice. It seems that the occasional overestimation of HR by the Apple Watch relative to the chest strap are errors biased toward consistency in patterns of variation. Maybe inaccuracy in general is nonrandom to the extent that it is biased toward consistency of such patterns. I suppose that could be due to Apple's algorithms that seem to aggregate data over many data points to get more accurate estimates. What do you think? That would be important to know if one is interested in variation itself in the underlying physiological/behavioral phenomena.

great review as always! regarding 08:31, my theory is that the apple watch can't read the heart rate when performing internal processing tasks, like updating the vo2 max or awarding fitness badges. during a recent run, when I hit a new calorie record, i noticed the heart rate signal was missing. similarly, when running downhill, the heart rate becomes unavailable for a brief period. might be purely coincidental though.

This question is based on your recent video about the AW Ultra Heart Rate Issue: I am curious to know, does the fact that the lag is corrected in the Apple Health App affect your rankings for heart rate accuracy compared to other brands? Is the reason Apple watches are so superior to all other brands in HR accuracy in your tests due to the fact that this lag is fixed after upload, as you discovered? I suppose you could test this by seeing whether Garmin does not correct any lag. Then, if this lag is corrected, perhaps it would much more closely match the Polar H10 graph, and have similar results to the Apple watch? What are your thoughts on testing this potential theory?

Great Channel. I spent a lot of time on here trying to decide between a Garmin and an Apple Watch. Got the Apple Watch and I'm happy, but not thrilled. I don't like the way it takes over my phone alerts to include ring tones for various people. Here's a challenge... Can the Apple Watch work just as accurately when worn on the inside of the wrist? I wear all my watches on the inside of my wrist to help keep them looking good with all the work I do. I have not found any "gaps" in the sensor's data collection, but you are the scientist who can tell us if it is just as accurate on the inside of the wrist as on top.

@@TheQuantifiedScientist The Garmin wearers talk about it improving the accuracy of their watches. Apple’ Marketing Department is terrified that someone wouldn’t see the watch being worn. They’ve convinced everyone that it is designed for the outside of the wrist and therefore won’t be as reliable/accurate. Quite entertaining.

Just know that the watches rely on a fair amount of machine learning to display heart rate. The models get updated quite frequently to improve etc. This is obviously a good thing. But is case of your tests, means that the results and findings will quickly become outdated.

Any reasons why apple watch sleep tracking seems always to underestimate deep sleep? If Im not mistaken, values of around 30-40min per night of deep sleep should induce serious health issues. And that are the values that the apple watch usually gives. Depp sleep should be around 20/30% of total night sleep. So for 8 hours of sleep = 1.3h/2.3h

hmm its interesting as im most interested in tracking REM sleep - due to a thing that it can be linked with ptsd issue and too much noradrenaline at sleeping stage. As i understand from your videos, overall apple watch SE 2022 (2gen) is better in general sleep tracking, but apple watch series 8, looks like have little better REM sleep tracking because its around 80% accuracy, and not 70% accuracy as in watch SE. Or maybe it could be an issue with new algorithm and older video of testing Apple watch SE 2022 that was done before this new algorithm get out?
