Interesting opinion piece, Appleby is divisive it always will be. Thirty thousand people descend on a tiny market town with a population of 3000 people is always going to create problems. Someone in the comments mentioned. Bristol.....imagine if 4.5 million descend on the city for a week X10 the population it's going to cause problems with infrastructure etc. Id disagree with comments suggesting people don't spend money. Obviously they do, and plenty of it, but not all filters into the local community. The cost of the fair is born by Eden borough, with a total population of just over 50k spread across 820 miles, so the financial burden of policing cleaning up the area outside of Appleby, collection of black bags etc is a significant amount from a small budget. For each business that does well out of the fair you'll find another that doesn't. That's the reality of the fair, there's plenty of support locally but a significant opposition too, both in the town and the area that surrounds it out to Kirkby Stephen. In your first video you said unbiased, but the depiction of town , and I quote, as a "ghost town" prior to the fair is somewhat unfair. It's a quiet little market town, what would you expect it to look like lol. You are definitely inside with the visitors and that's fine, as an opinion piece but to suggest it's unbiased...... There's good and bad at the fair,we all know that but so far your unbiased piece is falling a little bit short of the neutrality meter. The fairs a damn site better than Kendal Calling which caused chaos when 50k descend on Lowther. Enjoy your time at the fair, but don't judge people who live locally trying to get on with their everyday lives too harshly. After all not everybody wants thousands of tourists (I don't include travellers in that) turning up on there doorsteps.

Yes, I do agree with you, for someone who have moved to appleby for a quiet life the weeks of the fair will be a nightmare. I come from London, lived a stones throw from westham football ground. I hate football, hated the traffic the trouble and everything that goes with it. But my family still had to pay the council tax for that area. So yes, I do have sympathy for those, and I'm pleased you yourself see you can't blame all for the mess or trouble. Most of the locals so far won't be filmed, I've even offered not to show faces as I've done with some of the travelers. Getting a non basis account is very difficult and I think your comments are fair. Thank you. 😊

@Roadshome you claim to be unbiased but looking at your content i would say its anything but that. As for appleby being a ghost town then sadly i disagree,yes it can have its quiet days like all towns do. Im actually curious how long you stood for the perfect shot because i pick up my elderly father's prescription from the pharmacy every week including his shopping on other days also and i must be just plain unlucky as i always have to park halfway up towards the castle due to that many vehicles in town parked up. Maybe next time actually pop into the center of town itself rather than just a brief shot from the sands.

No surprise . I’ve been watching various videos of the fair . Horses are subject to abuse , whipping , yanking on the bits , kicking in the ribs , overloading with two riders . Bareback riding is uncomfortable for horses, putting pressure directly on the spine . Forcing horses into water when they obviously don’t want to go . These people are probably not aware of their lack of knowledge,but it’s no excuse . It’s not something to be proud of .

2 years ago I cycled to Appleby Fair. Due to meeting an old bod in Kirby Stephen who wanted to 'help', I ended up on the A66. I got a load of grief from gypsies in 3 vans, even though they got straight past and did not have to wait 1 second.. it s a wide road. Yet they expect traffic to wait behind their Mam's bowtop. I like the gypsies.. particularly the way they're obsessed with Rolex but never have any idea what time it is .. but they are rough and don't believe in do-as-you-would-be-done-by.

The Appleby horse fair isn't the 'right' of travellers. Most of these people claim benefits and pay no taxes whilst laughing at the rest of us. Appleby should have been stopped long ago. It is left in a disgusting state after the fair has gone, and locals are shown largely no respect by these people. If travellers are such lovely people, why do they cause so much trouble?

Sorry but I myself have to laught at you, appleby has been a travelers horse fair since th 1600's. Over 300 years. It's part of British history and tradition. They have every right. We have people burning the British flag and our police stand by and watch, while they turn up in car loads because someone parks on a bit of grass. We fought 2 world wars for our freedom. Our grandparents who fought those wars give us a right.
@HeartofEdenCrafts5 ай бұрын
We are local, you might want to reconsider your views after 5 arrested on gbh on 16 year old, 1 traveller found d3ad on field following machete attack and 1 horse worked to death and dumped by river. It's OK you visiting and saying this and yes shops get busy but also get lots of thefts, shoplifting and trouble hence why lots of our businesses close and saying they clean up the council, yes they clean main street but all villages where stop offs are left with rubbish by a minority who leave human mess in kids parks, fields etc and mi ority don't bag their rubbish up. Some travellers are great and respectful but minority ruin it for all the others
@Roadshome5 ай бұрын
That's what we have said, there is a small number which ruin it for the larger amount. Not all men are rapists, but women still fear walking alone in the streets. Not sure if anyone has died but maybe we missed that on the news as we don't have a TV.
