It feels very biased to say this as a fan and perhaps it’s a little silly to say because it’s subjective but St Vincent is definitely in the conversation of best artist of the last 20 years and I think she belongs in the conversation with all of the greats in history like Prince , Bowie, Bjork, Kate Bush etc Every album has been great , memorable and distinct from her previous work. Very excited to listen to the full album tonight, Daddy’s Home I think was her best album and the best of 2021 probably so expectations are high af.

SV is an underrated artist but imo not in the same category as the greats. I only have really liked Masseduction since it went in a much more experimental direction. Loved her album w/David Byrne too. I listened to the new album & while good it doesn't live up to my favorite song on it 'Broken Man'. Hoping the rest of the album grows on me.
@juju-vl7oj6 ай бұрын
@@augusts1 idk it’s subjective so it’s hard for me to come with arguments if you simply aren’t into her music that much but all I can say is if you haven’t yet try giving her albums more time. I think a lot of her music benefits from repeat listens. Honestly it took me until her self titled album to fully get into her music before that I liked a handful of full of songs. I think she’s every bit as creative and talented as anyone else of the last 50 years of music her style just may not be for everybody.

This was SUCH a great interview! It helps that Zane is very good at this _and_ Annie is talented _as an interview subject._ She's such a smart creative interesting person...I could listen to her talk about art and creativity forever. My favorite thing about her is how deeply obsessed with MUSIC she is. That's not super common, oddly enough. How many popular artists will talk for 5 minutes about the yearning emotional timbre of a major 7th chord? Not many. I like both Annie and Matty Healy, in part, because they actually love music...making art with sound. All the other stuff...the thematic elements, the aesthetics, the lyrics, etc...is super interesting too, and she can speak to that very well. But I just love how _fluent_ she is when talking about actual music...chords, notes, melodies, rhythms, timbres, cadences, motifs, etc. I also love how she hasn't lost her edge, her passion, her curiosity...and is still making relevant music that matters in the culture. She's 41. Most 41 year olds lose touch with the ineffable joy of creating art. I'm 41 myself....and it's refreshing to have someone like Annie as an example for how it can be done. It's not inevitable that you get old and resign yourself to some legacy tour and endless greatest hits albums. You can still make important art....but ONLY if you refuse to extinguish your inner light.

I've been a fan of St Vincent since ~2011 or so. Got very into her first 3 albums and then the collab with David Byrne when that came out. I've always appreciated that each of her albums has a unique identity. There are some common elements and through lines but they all feel different in some way and you can tell that she's always growing as an artist, which is awesome. Sometimes this meant that my taste didn't exactly align with her but that's ok. All of that said, this album is the first one in a while where I feel totally in sync again. This album is flawless, I loved every single track. Can't wait to listen more.

I love how you talk about “code switch.” I had never heard this term before but I have described my experiences of growing up gay as being myself one minute and then realizing I needed to pretend to be someone else, like walking out on the stage. My life felt like a performance I hadn’t prepared for. 😂 It was awful, but you helped me see it in a different way, as a survival mechanism. Thank you so much for that. ❤❤❤
