I was married to someone who couldn't hold a job because, like Lucas, his ego and attitude wasn't supported by his abilities. Luckily, he liked that I made good money and had a work ethic. He decided he could be a "house husband"... only he didn't cook, do laundry, clean or take care of the baby. At some point I realized he had no redeeming qualities. Not a one... and lots of unredeeming ones. Ladies, never quit your job. Make sure you can at least support yourself... maybe not fabulously but enough.

Suddenly, I am being reminded of the time I overheard a conversation between my sister and one of her ex's. He hated that she went & got a job at his old workplace, and he wasn't able to keep a job. (They were together for 3 years, and he had about 6 jobs in that time + he was apparently doing a college course... all he did was play my nephews PS2, and complain about everything. I was so glad when my sister saw what a manipulative, gaslighting a*sehole he was!) Oh, and I should mention that my sister has worked there for over 15 years now. And her partner is happy to let her work, even though they have more than enough coming in for her to quit if she wants.

I actually know someone like Lucas. She has always thought she was the smartest person in the room, even when she was a six year old. She thought no one had the right to tell her what to do and that she knew more about everything than anyone else, even her teachers. In actuality she was book smart, she had a good memory, but could not apply the knowledge and things that were common sense were completely unknown to her. She quit high school because, ‘they have nothing to teach me’ , as she kept declaring. She has worked cleaning and waitress jobs since then. She never keeps a job for long because she always ends up fighting with her co-workers and bosses because, as she says, they were really stupid. She is fifty years old and nothing has changed. She also thinks she is the cutest and sexiest woman in the room which is a complete delusion.

I've seen this before. In cases like this, "you're not listening to me!" and/or "you just don't understand me!" can be translated to "you don't just agree with me like I want!" I've personally been accused of this myself. People will give advice, and I'll say I appreciate it, but it doesn't work for me, for logical reasons. Then they'll say "you never listen to me!" No, I listened. I just disagreed with you. Also, it's completely immature to want your wife to quit her job so she can take care of you. MAYBE if you didn't financially need two incomes, it'd not be as bad, but that should be a mutual decision, not him trying to force her. Like others have said, if a man wants a woman to quit her job, it's quite suspicious. It's almost always an isolation tactic and/or for selfish reasons like in this story. It's not something I'd ever do, personally.
