From the executive producers of Band of Brothers and The Pacific comes Masters of the Air, now streaming on Apple TV+ apple.co/_Mast...
Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.
The series features a stellar cast led by Academy Award nominee Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann, who are joined by Raff Law, Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.
Hailing from Apple Studios, "Masters of the Air" is executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Television, and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman for Playtone. Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey co-executive produce alongside Playtone’s Steven Shareshian. In addition to writing, Orloff co-executive produces. Graham Yost also serves as co-executive producer. Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Dee Rees and Tim Van Patten serve as directors.

This trailer is very polished looking. I hope they haven't abandoned the gritty realism and harsh tone that in my book is what made Band of Brothers and the Pacific the timeless classics that they are. There is a reason those two series are timeless while WWII films like Unbroken and Red Tails or the recent Greyhound with Tom Hanks on Apple TV aren't - it's the manufactured smaltz factor that the latter have. I think Butler is a fine actor, but I hope he's not over-emoting this entire series like it comes across in the trailer

Every single person who calls themselves an American should have to watch this. The tragic hardships, struggles, sacrifices, and great losses faced by pilots, who were literally boys, of US 8th Air Force, left me in tears and on the edge of my seat…sometimes cheering them on and others grieving with them. More than that I was left with an exceptional appreciation for my freedom and the cost, in blood, that it took to achieve it. All of this was just a tiny fraction of the unsung hero’s of WWII. Definitely a MUST see..

I teared up watching this trailer, I've been waiting for this to come out ever since it was announced as a thing. My grandfather served as a bombardier in the 8th Air Force--the very group this is about, although not in the units portrayed as far as I can tell--in the war, and was shot down on his 30th and last mission just days before D-Day. He spent much of the rest of the war imprisoned in Stalug Luft III--escaping twice, staying free the second time--before being liberated by troops under the command of General Patton himself. Seeing something like this brought to the screen, with this much amazing work put into it, is something I've wanted to see in some way for the longest time, having only read his story in his unpublished memoir. He died seven years before I was born after a life that could only be described as epic. Now, his story, or what will likely be as close as it'll get to one portrayed onscreen, is finally coming, and from no less than the people who made Band of Brothers and The Pacific. To say I'm stoked is an understatement.

Steward of the Tuskegee Airmen before his passing, as well as Jim Kunkle, my old boss' grandfather before I signed. They both told me to start shooting clay pigeons if I were to be an aerial gunner, as it was a part of their training then and is no longer a part of the current syllabus. Doing so helped me when I became qualified in Aerial gunnery, as it teaches you how to lead and lag moving targets on both sides of the aircraft. Been waiting quite sometime for this series.

My grandfather was a lieutenant in South Pacific during WWII. He flew reconnaissance in the Jolly Rogers B-24 Liberator "One Time". He won the silver star for bravery for going off mission to shoot down a kamikaze before it hit a ship full of American troops. According to his war journal, when stationed in Australia and not out on missions, he and his crew drank, smoked, and played cards.

I live in Norfolk right near Hethel where the 389th BG Liberators flew from, I also visit the 100th BG at Thorpe Abbotts where they have preserved the control tower and built a superb museum there. They have many photos of Majors John “Bucky” Egan and Gale “Buck” Cleven. There is an excellent museum in Horham too where the 95th BG were based, with the Red Feather Club and a beautiful preserved wall art of a Knight on a horse. I've been fortunate to meet many of the old Bomber boys and went to a 95th BG reunion in Dayton Ohio. I went to Westminster, Washington and flew on Nine O Nine of the Collings Foundation that sadly crashed a few years back. Wonderful men who were mere teenagers or in their early 20s when we asked so much from them in wartime. I hope this is an accurate portrayal of what they went through without glamorising it disproportionately in "Hollywood style".

This is so clearly missing the HBO touch. Nobody over there would let this amount of CGI replace things that could be done practically. I'm sure the story will be compelling, but from this trailer alone (which is a massive caveat) the visual signature that was created with Saving Private Ryan, perfected with Band of Brothers and then carried through in the Pacific. I know the nature of the show is different, and that the intricacies of dogfights would be near impossible to create without GCI, but some ground-based sets here are clearly computers, and the grading is all over the place. The sunset/sunrise scene looks like something from a Baz Luhrmann film. Like when Easy Company were in the sunshine in Berchtesgaden, you could still feel the same grit that was there during Bastogne.

They can make the argument that a lot of it is based on books but a lot is also based on history and is hardly fiction so why not give us an epic 10-parter on tankers? Read the book for the second time this summer. It is a masterpiece. While the trailer looks nice and flashy, there is here a sort of veil of romance and bravado that is not felt in the book. The book is blood and guts and 'normal' (If you can can people that crawl into a ball turret normal) people doing incredible things. As others have mentioned, I hope they are not losing the grip on what made The Pacific, Private Ryan and especially Band of Brothers great; the grounded, uncensored, grim and realistic look, feel and sound. I think I heard something the Hanks even commented that he wanted a grimmer tone for Masters of the Air, more on par with 'Das Boot' for this one- and I am not quite feeling it from this trailer. This feels VERY Hollywood in all aspects.. 'Pretty girl back home', Slow motion explosions, sunsets everywhere...Rest assured- I will still watch it do death- I just hope they do the source material justice in all it's brutality and grit. Edit: Have now seen the first two episodes and I am sad to say the trailer is exactly what the show is; polished, romantic and with mediocre writing at best. More Pearl Harbour style than anyhing else. Sunsets, posing, stereotypes galore, apple pie, lens flares and effects defying the laws of physics. Watchable: Oh yes! Masterpiece: No. You are better served not comparing to BoB and see it very much as its own thing and enjoy the views and period detail. Despite not being up there with the best- it still has things to enjoy. Time to re-read the book.

Back in the 80’s I crawled into the static B-17 at Chino airport and as I worked my way to the nose I heard a man talking to himself in German. When I reached the nose he turned, looked, and said; in accented English, “I cannot believe that I am sitting in a place where these great men once were.” I asked him if he was German and he said yes and that he was a young teen in the suburbs of, I want to say Marienburg but it has been a while, and he remembered that the B-17’s flew into more heavily flak defended airspace than flying over his small complex and he knew it was that they wanted to avoid any harm to he and his neighbors. I did not have to ask him why he thought that as he knew it as he listened to Luftwaffe fighter pilots. He also said that the Luftwaffe pilots, that frequented a gasthaus in his small town, would talk about how brave the Americans were, saying that they never turned back, and that they were amazed at their tenacity. As a teen he said he would never forget the admiration that the German pilots had for the men who flew the Boeings. I will never forget meeting this man as I remember holding back tears as he spoke. My dad was part of the P-51 program at North American’s Mines Field during the war, flying from airfield to airfield in “Dutch” Kindelberger’s B-25 NA 40-2165 with Tex LaGrone. He always talked about the laminar air flow wings of the P-51, that helped give it long-legs with less drag, a tighter turning radius and prevented compressibility. They could fly to Berlin.

Without a doubt the "Greatest Generation". Dad was a crew chief in a P-51 squadron in the Pacific. He always referred to the aircraft as "his aircraft" and always referred to them as "ships". He lost two pilots to enemy action and this weighed heavily on him for the rest of his life. On one mission "his" pilot inadvertently fired a burst of .50 cal over my Dad's head before taxi. Set his hat on fire, knocked him unconscious and gave him a concussion. The pilot shut it down right then and there and there would be no mission that day for him as the pilot was so shook up. A few nights later the pilot, hammered off his ass, came into my Dad's quarters while he was asleep all apologetic and what-not. My Dad was like, "Goddammit!!! Band of Brothers was probably the best series ever released. The Pacific was good, but not near the caliber of BOB. This looks very promising.

The pacific is just as good. Nothing will ever top BOB, it's the holy grail of WWII cinema. It's not a feel-good (at times) watch like BOB, which means it did its job of accurately depicting the pacific theater.

The pacific blew band of brothers out of the water with combat, emotion, and atmosphere. The pacific theatre is just different. To me, the Japanese empire was more intense than the Germans ever thought of being and the pacific caught that warrior mentality the Japanese had.

No disrespect intended, but I believe the Tuskegee airmen were based in Italy not out of England. Not sure why they were included in this clip.

Because they flew missions over southern, central, and northern Europe, including Berlin. They shared the same skies and some the same POW camps. Included as being a part of the larger air war where their paths did cross. It's that simple.

I hope they mention the other nations in this war this time. The same skies were full of British, Canadian and Australian airmen and they were up fighting to the death for 3 years before the USA showed up.

Looks good but one of the tragedies of bomber piloting is when cities like London were bombed or cities like Cologne. Cologne was incidenary bombed that created a firestorm. 20k civilians died. It was the RAF, not US but you get the point. Reconciling those contradictions in all wars is heartbreaking

Dee Rees directed 2 episodes. She had air combat scenes in Mudbound too.

Looks like it might be too much sub par cgi and over dramatic acting. Not to mention all the stereotypes and tropes we've gotten accustomed to with these types of films. Band of Brothers was so good because it didn't feel like it was made by Hollywood. It felt real.

Ever since Elvis, I’ve become a big fan of Austin Butler and from what I’ve seen in these trailers it looks like he’s gonna do a great job in this show so I can’t wait to watch. I’m still praying that one day he does a project with Harris Dickinson because I’m dying to see them play brothers (they look so much alike)! Speaking of look alikes, am I the only one who finds that Callum Turner looks like William Moseley from the Narnia movies?

Yes, you are the only one who thinks that. Callum Turner is known for looking like Eddie Redmayne.

This is so authentic that they even used CGI from the 1940s.

Please, be so kind to find them even 10 B-17s to rent so that the CGI isn't needed anymore. To say nothing of dozens of them, if not a hundred

@@MDzmitry there is such a thing as good CGI. I just don't think this is it.
