Your comment about the solenoid coils failing slowly while allowing initial burn was right on the money. Odd symptom, spot-on diagnosis. Dryer fixed in two hours, including trip for parts. Thanks a million.

Excellent video. Even technicians experienced in other types of controls may not be familiar with the logic used on a gas dryer. Approaching the problem in a step by step manner most problems reveal themselves. Don’t get discouraged if your issue falls under the “advanced” category. It’s called that for a reason. Make a copy of the diagram you can write on to keep track of what’s happening in the circuit. Watch the video again. Ask-What points do I want to check next? If you stick with it you will figure out what’s wrong, you’ll fix it, and that’s something to be proud of.

Absolutely one of the best instructional videos I've seen for the DIY'er! No nonsense, straight to the point, sequential investigating and top-notch editing and production. This is a 10 in my book. Hope to find more like it for other appliances. Thank you!

Best video I found on this topic, thanks! On replacing solenoid coils, two extra details would help -- the three-prong one in front should have the wires low, the two-prong in back should have them high; and there's a protrusion on the top of each coil that goes in a hole in the cover, easiest to line up if the cover goes on the coils first, then the whole thing back in position.

This is the best video on fixing your gas dryer. I have never worked on a dryer before. I barely know how to use a multi meter. Followed the instructions in this video right down to pausing it to see the settings on the multi meter shown. Fuse ...ok. Igniter...ok. Flame switch...open circuit! $15.00 later, dryer is fixed! Awesome! Thank you very much.

Great Job with this. Tested the coil valve one was bad replaced them myself and works like a charm. No huge bills, just new coils. Bonus was able to clean out the inside of the dryer, found 20 bucks worth of change a few earrings, 2 broaches, a 10 dollar bill, and assorted other treasures.

I agree with the prior complements. It is so refreshing to see a clear and complete tutorial that provides exactly the information that the title claims, without the usual sales or personal publicity motives. Also, the explanation as to why there is an internal heating element inside the four-wire cycling thermostat is the first of all the many KZbins that explained this and got it right. Thanks!

This is a great video. Was doing research on why my Whirlpool Duet gas dryer wasn't drying my clothes. Was difficult to determine the defective part without an ohm meter. The burner pilot would turn on and the flame would ignite but on the second cycle when the pilot turned one flame would not ignite. This video helped me identify the coil solenoid. Replaced them for $10 and good as new.

Also wanted to tell you how wonderful it is to have someone who knows how to read the voltmeter to troubleshoot. This is a great learning video for those of us who don't know how to read the multi-tester or schematic drawings. My brother became an engineer in electronics, and when he was first studying, I never paid attention to everything he'd say he was learning, and I now wish I had.

Great video, saved me the cost of a repair man! I had a big ball of lint stuck in the duct and it popped the thermal cutoff. Lesson learned I need to clean my duct more often. Anyone reading this, don’t be afraid of the “advanced troubleshooting”. In conjunction with the video, I went to there website to do a little reading and it was all very clear what worked and did not work using a multimeter.

I have a Whirlpool gas dryer that no longer heats but still cycles. It's unusable without any heat. I've ck'd the outdoor vent and only looked at the back which is completely encased. I think gas dryers of the past had an accessible entry to relight pilot. I get that those times are past. The video is very informative and have given me a few other ck's before calling it quits. Great vid, I'd like to add to the discussion for those watching. If your dryer's ignitor is lighting up but it fails to trigger the valve it the ignitor could be weak and need to be replaced. You should of course check the other possibilities mentioned in this video but keep the ignitor in mind. Cheers.

There is only one orifice needed but they give you two, one for LP and one for butane. If you are running it with the drum out or the door open it will do that because the blower is not able to draw the heat back off the hi- limit thermostat. try putting it back together with the door closed and it should work. Good luck! Thanks for the question!

Thanks! My Kenmore Elite gas dryer wasn't heating. After looking at various online videos (not this one) and repair guides and suggestions online, I replaced the fuse, the igniter, and the high limit thermostat, and none of those solved the problem. The igniter still didn't light up. I checked the flame sensor for continuity and that was fine. Finally, after watching this video, I saw in the repair manual that came with the dryer that there was also a heater relay in the circuit. Once I found that part on the dryer, I realized there was also a motor relay, and they were the exact same model. I swapped the two and the igniter worked (I had to hold down the start button because now the motor didn't stay running). I installed a new relay and now I have a working dryer again. I wish I had started with this part, but at least the dryer is fixed!

Just a big Thank You. Mine was wire which came loose off the flame sensor and sat under the flower tube, so I couldn't see it. But as I tested the various components according to your instructions, I found one of the terminals to the flame sensor unconnector, and dug underneath a blind spot to find the matching wire. Thanks for the posting the video and providing all this feedback support to people asking questions. I will order any appliance parts I might need in the future from your company.

FANtastic video! I had a multimeter, no idea how to use it. But with your instruction I was able to establish that the fuse was bad (lucky me, first thing I checked!). Bypassed it just to double check. I cleaned the entire machine, including removing the lint catch tunnel thing. GOod thing! THe very bottom had thick, caked on lint that was severely narrowing the passage of air. Need a screw driver to chip it away! I think that's what caused the overheating that blew the thermal fuse. Got a new belt, and the rear seal was hurting so ordered new one of those. Not bad for a 20+ year old machine! The timer is limping along, but at $140 I'll cross that bridge later. They should have appliance salvage yards. THanks again!

Excellent video! Reading the comments I learned to check continuity of each component before disassembly and replacement. Opened up the dryer and tested the main components which were all good. In the end, some critter had crawled up the exhaust pipe and created a nest causing air flow resistance. Outdoor washer/dryer. Cleared and cleaned the exhaust pipe and it ran like new!! No replacements needed. Start with the simple things first!!

That's true! In some states it's required the installer replace it... Replacing the plastic flexible duct is highly recommended! The stuff in the video isn't the best but it's generally okay, you just need to avoid dips and bends in the duct. Definitely much more prone to clogging than the rigid duct though. Thanks for the comment!

Thank you for making that point! The drum does need to be in place for the blower to properly draw the heat away from the hi-limit thermostat which will kick the burner off after about 10-15 seconds if the duct is clogged or the appliance is open not allowing the blower to pull heat. Sorry I didn't make that more clear! Congratulations! Thanks for the comment!

Your video's helped me immensely diagnosing problem with my older Whirlpool dryer. Since I'd ck'd the vent to outside previously, I started with pulling off the little front end clip to view the gas ignition. On high heat, it started up orange, then ignited the gas, I think indicating no need to ck. if it was getting gas. It heated up. I then pulled off the venting to dryer and to outside vent and cleaned out. Now running a test load without vent but have ck'd the front-end view to gas ignition and am only seeing the orange that should ignite the heating element, but it's not coming on. Ugh. I'm a stubborn grandma and insist on fixing stuff myself if possible. Already have a volt meter so guess I need to dig further and locate fuses, etc. Regardless, thanks for your informative video. Whether or not I'm able fix, I've been able eliminate several issues.

My dryer has intermittent heat. Reading on ignitor and Flame sensor are fine. No excessive junk in the outlet . I hooked a volt meter up to the lead at the gas valve. I could see the 125V when the flame started and then ~1V when the hi temp switch opened. Then the gas shut off, as it should. Problem is the flame starts if it feels like it. I think the gas valve is old and tired. Probably too expensive a fix for an 8 year old dryer. Thanks for posting all this information.

I've fixed a number of dryers. Often there is something stupid that makes troubleshooting take longer (much longer) than it should So, hang in there DIYers - this is doable. My last event, I had unplugged the thermal fuse as suggested in a trouble shooting step. Later I determined the flame sensor was broken and actually was able to fix it without buying a new one! HOWEVER, it took a few more hours of head scratching since I hadn't plugged the lead back on the thermal fuse. This is a great video. I especially like the run down on the schematic and operation beginning at 7:08. Regarding the flame sensor, when I disconncted the lead, the terminal snapped off b/c the rivet that holds it in place had corroded. I just drilled (dremel is broken) it out and put a small nut and bolt through. Don't know how long it will last but it has held up for about a month now.

Great comprehensive video for virtually ANY OLDER gas dryer heating problem. Great JOB. NOT COVERED was rare circumstance where gad valve itself is bad. Test gas valve solenoid coils for resistance. Two terminal coul should test at 1k to 2K ohms at room temperature. The LEFT terminal big three wire booster is the common terminal. Resistance across each coil should read 300-2k ohms. If Open (OL) or very high resistance, replace BOTH SOLENOIDS. If they are good, igniter glows bright orange, but turns off without igniting burner, then the grass valve itself is bad. ALL MODERN DRYERS now use a relay start switch witch MUST be tested live with current running through primary wires. When pushes the relay will close the circuit between the terminals of the secondary if working properly. I know if no MODERN DRYERS that still have an electro-mechanical timer. They all use electronic printed circuit boards (PCB). a few (low priced AMANA) may still have a motor to move the selector knob in timed dry. GE was the last to go to a PCB control. Now owned by Korean giant, HAIER, the new control boards have been problematic - especially in washers and STACKER, all-in-one units. You can save time by checking the continuity between the red wire (might be different color vin non Whirlpool made products (and the DISCONNECTED light blue wire on the thermal fuse with DOOR CLOSED. If continuity is present, all the thermostats and door switch are good. Check burner operation. If that same test on an electric heated dryer shows continuity, the heating element is also likely good. If not and dryer will not start, check door switch and thermal fuse first. Keep in mind that if thermal fuse or thermal cut-0ff Thermostat blew, something got too hot. The fuse also will blow if the motor draws too many amps. The thermal cut-off will blow (some are resettable now) the heater got too hot, indicating high limit thermostat is malfunctioning. In Electric model, a heating coil (many have two now) may be shorted to ground. This condition should blow the circuit breaker.

installing a new fuse will probably fix the heat problem but the timer must also have a problem part 8299764 that timer can be opened and reassembled fairly easily... however, before you open it you should be willing to replace it... and when you are putting it back together don't force anything. usually shifting the timer knob back ad forth will get the inner timer cam to seat back into place. When it's open you may see why it's sticking. Good luck! and congratulations!! : )

Sorry it took so long to get back with you! A dryer coil replacement is usually about 130-150! Kudos to you my friend!

That sounds about right... Drum temperature fluctuations depend on the moisture content of the clothing, burner size, and temperature settings. Thanks for the comment!

After viewing 6 or more other videos, I found this is the first one that is clear, easy, and most importantly THOROUGH ! Other videos would have had me replacing the wrong parts. EXCELLENT !

No problem, ApplianceAssistant. I came across with an intermittent solenoid issue where the coils would pass the continuity test. It almost has the same resistance value as the new part. It seems to me that when the coils are energized, they dynamically fail rather than a static failure where the part fails under no load. Replaced the coils and my friend told me that she hasn't had any failure since.

Thank you thank you thank you !!! I bought new parts for my dryer (Flame sensor, igniter, coil kit) I am sure that all parts were installed correctly, but I forgot to pay attention to which color wire went where !! The dryer shorted out when I started it so I know some wire is in the wrong spot. I bought new spades for the connections and I am praying that I can figure this out !! Your video helped me understand tremendously.

This video was a great in helping me diagnose my issue (my thermofuse had blown out). I gave the dryer a much needed cleaning and replaced the thermofuse.

Thanks for the great video. My problem turned out to be the thermal fuse. With your help I was able to find it, test it and replace it! Cleaned out my dryer vent hose while I was at it....the fact that it was full of lint probably caused the fuse to fail. Thanks for taking the time to post this video. You saved me lots of time and money.

Thanks for the great info. My igniter burned bright no flame so I checked the 'dryer radiant sensor' per your instructions read '0'. Also, there were web/lint around the 'dryer radiant sensor', therefore, I used my shop vac and carefully vacuumed around the sensor and wahlah, flame came ON. Thanks again!

The gas values coils were the problem with our Maytag, shutting off heat after about 10 min. My sister and I changed the cycling thermostat first, did not work. The timer did not work also previously. Then we ordered and changed a thermal fuse. That did not work. Finally we ordered the gas valve coils from Amazon and found the correct # of the coils on line. It works great now and the timer works again now PTL Ultra Durable 279834 Dryer Gas Valve Ignition Solenoid Coil Kit Replacement Part by Blue Stars - Exact Fit for Whirlpool Kenmore Maytag Dryers - Replaces AP3094251 PS334310 12001349 for model MDG308DAWW.

Very helpful video. Appreciate the step by step detail. I didn't observe a flame, and the thermal fuse registered 0 on the multimeter allowing for continuity. Next was the ignitor test which registered non zero values and is good from the video explanation. The fault appears to be the flame sensor which registered non 0 values for continuity failure. Ordered a $14 replacement part off eBay and patiently waiting and hoping that is the root cause.

Great video and information for us fellow KZbinrs and technician's. Only critique i have is the dryer vent should not exceed 35 ft.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank You! Using your video I was able to diagnose the problem with my Maytag gas dryer. The wife-of course-just wanted to run out and spend money I don't have on a brand new dryer. Her complaint-the color does not match the rest of the house, and it's "icky". Well, it might be "icky" but it still dries clothes. She's unhappy, but my dryer works! Thank you again. Turns out my ignitor was bad. I tested the thermal fuse first, then the thermostat, and then the ignitor, and BINGO! Bad ignitor! Local appliance repair shop a new one in stock for $47. In total, it took about an hour & a half, and $47. Sure beats buying a new dryer!
