Hello Mr. David, what is the final polish recipe for polishing the varnish? Please advise me. I am a novice maker and I follow your kind and generous instructions. Thank you very much.
@DavideSora
@DavideSora 5 ай бұрын
For the final coat, I use the same varnish I use for varnishing applied with a pad. Containing shellac, it can also work with a pad. Alternatively, you can use shellac alone, dissolved in alcohol and filtered with a not-too-fine filter to keep the wax in the solution. Some add a small percentage of benzoin, I don't add it because it makes things too shiny for my tastes.

Sempre arrasando , e isto e muito satisfatório de ver, me ajuda a entender esse processo e feito depois da aplicação da albumina e antes do verniz e isso?
@DavideSora

Yes, first I apply the protein size (casein) and then this reflective/mineral ground with mastic and turpentine. Then I proceed with the actual varnish.

@@DavideSoraSo, no kind of stain/dye between the two?
@DavideSora
@DavideSora 11 ай бұрын
@@gil_evans I tan the wood for about a week in the UV box to get some color, before applying the casein. Casein itself also adds some color, due to the presence of ammonia and calcium hydroxide. Sometimes I applied an organic oxidant after the casein and before the mastic and turpentine, something similar to saltpetre, which works well but is very long and complicated to make (it is not available on the market). Many luthiers use sodium or potassium nitrite as an oxidizer before applying the refractive ground, it is easily available (it is an industrial chemical product) but I don't like the color, and I remain of the opinion that the best color is the one obtained with oxidation of wood just via UV rays.

Do you know if Dammar gum would work with the turps and pumice, in place of Mastic? I have a lot of it, and have no use for it. Thanks as always for the great video.
@DavideSora
@DavideSora 11 ай бұрын
I think so, as it should be soluble in turpentine essence and as hardness, it should be pretty similar. But I've never used it so don't take what I say for granted. Above all, I don't know its drying times and cooking temperatures, which could be different. As usual, the only way is to try and do tests on wood scraps and even glass plates for transparency and hardness. What I know is that some luthiers use Dammar, so there must be a way to use it properly on violins...🙂

@@DavideSora Thank you for your comments. I know from direct experience that it is very soluble in both turps and alcohol and is much easier to use (melting point) than the Congo Copals I have used. I am not sure whether its light refraction is comparable to mastic, but it is certainly less expensive to use {:-)) I will try both the Mastic and the Dammar in separate trials using your directions, and see what the results are. Thanks again for sharing both your experience and your knowledge with such clarity and generosity.

Excuse my confusion Davide, after the application of the mastic and pumice mix do you then start the varnishing process? I couldn’t decide if a second coat of mastic and turpentine WITHOUT pumice was applied. Then begin the varnishing.
@bluehoo0

Definitely confusion on my part. Just read the last chapter of the English translation, begin varnishing when mastic/pumice is completely dry. Just spent the day looking after the granddaughter she’s got me run ragged 😅 I’ll be fine after a good nights sleep.

@@bluehoo0 Yes, after the mastic with the pumice and after removing the excess with the alcohol and the rag (very important) I start with the varnish

24 ore nella lampada UV, oppure circa una settimana circa con il clima che c'è qui a Cremona. Se fa caldo e se c'è poco umido anche solo qualche giorno, l'importante è che sia perfettamente asciutto.

@DavideSora do you use coarse, fine or extra fine pumice I am worry if I use exata fine it can stick with marine and leave whites cloudy spots
@DavideSora
@DavideSora 3 ай бұрын
@@100sanset I use this one (fine): www.kremer-pigmente.com/en/shop/fillers-building-materials/polishing-powders/599900-pumice-powder-fine.html The white spots are caused by the presence of air in the pumice, i.e. by insufficient absorption of liquids and resins in the micro-porosities of the pumice. Waiting some time after adding it to the Mastic and turpentine (or to whatever else) and using a sufficiently diluted solution allows you to ensure complete absorption, avoiding the presence of trapped air and the consequent white spots
