I've been a Logger/Faller most of my adult life. Worked from the Coastal waters of British Columbia to all over the Western US and I have seen burls on Trees that woodworkers would spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for....cut off the trunk of a Tree and let it go to rot sitting high on some slope miles from anyplace....if A guy was smart he would get himself a Sikorsky Heavy lifting Chopper and go searching for these discarded burls, salvage them and sell them on the open market to the highest bidder....you could honestly make millions a year if you knew where to look ! Our Dining Room Table in our Log Home here in the Mountains is made from just such a burl from the side of a giant coastal yellow cedar ...My Son and I did it all by ourselves and it's the most beautiful thing outside our children that I have ever made and gave my wife for our 30th anniversary. It seats 12 adults very comfortable and is the center piece of our formal dining room. It's a live edge creation of my own and there is not one metal fastener in it any place. The top alone is 4" thick and actually two pieces cut one after another at the local saw mill for me then laid end to end so it's almost a mirror image of itself. We only had one shot to get it right and it took our Son and I about 4 months to get it completely finished but boy was the work and sweat equity we put in it ever worth it.

And now in BC there almost no old growth stands left. If I wanted to see this area how it had been for 1000s of years I would have to pay a fair amount of money travelling to some distant small locations. All for short term greed and profit and often destroying husge ancient trees to use for things like cedar shakes. Easily 100s of years of growth and the entire habitat around it(Not just the trees, but thousands of plants and small animals) destroyed by typically unrestrained human greed. Belting it up without protection to be lifted and flung around, letting those cables cut into the wood, planing and sanding it without any dimensioning and ultimately coating it with a thick layer of sticky paint. In the end you have felled a several hundred year old tree for cutting a hugh block out of the best part that has no other use than to be a hugh block. I'm glad nobody commented: "Uh, great craftsmanship!", because it isn't. This log has three hearts, the first cut from the side was indicative to what was a head but they made a second cut from the face to see what was inside this was the first big wide board but the next thicker board was stained across the grain partially. The side cut had the best flame in my view. This was a veneer log I reckon that is where the value was. Extraordinary timber log.

why do you say that
@robertevans6481Ай бұрын
@@WoodworkingProjectsideas1994 most likely they cut it for slabs. But they could cut it thicker slabs,but those size will be more profitable,boards would be good to cut from them trash pieces,but you would want to have little waste. So that could still sell the scraps as you want to get the most amount of income,vs how much you paid for it, And the color of the wood was very nice. We can just imagine that tree....and how old it is.

I really dont understand all you people crying about how terrible it is to fell such a large tree that has been growing for hundreds of years just to make a table 😂 Like, were you all born yesterday? You know nothing about this tree or anything. Maybe it was felled 50 years ago because it was leaning and was a hazard to everyone around it. It could literally be million reasons why it was good to fell it, but you know nothing of the context or what was actually the case in reality. But important thing is that you whine about something you know nothing about😂
