Summary for everyone's reference: Early Decision at Northwestern University Northwestern University's Early Decision (ED) program requires a binding commitment from applicants, meaning they must attend if admitted. The ED application deadline is November 1st, and decisions are released around mid-December. Early Action Programs Early Action (EA) programs, offered at other institutions, also have earlier application deadlines but are non-binding. Applicants can apply to multiple EA programs and are not obligated to attend if admitted. Restrictive Early Action Programs Restrictive Early Action (REA) programs, like Single Choice Early Action, limit applicants to applying early to only one institution. However, REA programs are non-binding, giving students more flexibility in their college decision process. Early Decision Application Process Early Decision applications mean that if admitted, the applicant will no longer apply to other schools for the Regular Decision round. Students should apply for Early Decision to a school if they are sure that they will be happy to attend that school and no longer go through the application process. Early Decision Outcomes There are three possible decisions for Early Decision applicants: admitted, denied, or deferred to the Regular Decision round. Financial Considerations for Early Decision Students should discuss their financial situation with their family to ensure they can afford four years of college before committing to early decision. Northwestern University receives a high volume of early decision applications, over 5,000 last year, and admits around half of its incoming class through early decision. Early Decision vs. Regular Decision While the early decision pool is highly competitive, the regular decision pool is even larger, leading to more rejections despite similar academic profiles. Students who apply through early decision are typically strong candidates who would also be competitive during the regular decision round. Northwestern's Advice on Early Decision Northwestern University encourages students to take their time deciding and not feel pressured to apply early. Financial Aid for Early Decision Applicants The financial aid package is the same for both early decision and regular decision applicants at Northwestern. Students and their families should discuss finances and create a budget before applying to college. Northwestern's Financial Aid Resources Northwestern University has two tools to help families estimate college costs: the EFC calculator and the My Intuition tuition estimator. Northwestern University is committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need for admitted students. Financial Aid Adjustments Students who are admitted to Northwestern but discover the financial aid package does not meet their expectations are encouraged to contact the financial aid office to determine if adjustments can be made. Early Decision Release Policy Northwestern permits a limited number of students to be released from the binding Early Decision commitment if, after consulting with financial aid, they determine their family cannot afford the cost of attendance. Northwestern's Early Decision agreement, along with most other institutions, includes language that allows for the removal of a student from the Early Decision process if financial circumstances are not suitable. Northwestern's Resources for Prospective Students Northwestern University offers both in-person and virtual programs, such as Purple Preview, to help prospective students experience the campus and interact with current students. The university provides various digital resources, including live tours, panel discussions, and conversations with campus partners, to assist students in making informed decisions about Early Decision applications. QuestBridge National Match Program Northwestern University participates in the QuestBridge National Match program, offering financial aid and scholarship opportunities for low-income students, with matched students being admitted through the Early Decision cohort.
