Yes, this technique works in any embroidery machine of any brand. The trick is finding the embroidery designs that are created for Applique in the specifically. OEsd has a ton of choices: embroideryonline.com/shop?search_query=Applique#/sort:ga_unique_purchases:desc

Can you not take the hoop out to trim the fabric appliques, before moving on?

Yes, please remove the hoop from the machine to trim, but do not take the work out of the hoop until the design is complete.
