I got my first 'this address is unlicensed' letter about 4 months ago. I got a slightly nastier one about 6 weeks ago. Both in brown envelopes. Just before the weekend I got a letter in a white envelope - lots of red writing inside! - telling me that an enforcement visit has been authorised to this address. I can quite see how people could be scared by such a letter, if they are unaware of the behaviour of C(r)apita, aka TV licensing, and the actual law on TV licences. Well, I'll expect the goons (not!) when I see them. Many delivery drivers can't work out how our video intercom operates, I expect even less capability on behalf of the goons! I have to admit I was surprised at the speed of escalation from 'this address is unlicensed' to the red 'visit authorised' one. I refuse to tell them I don't need a licence - there is no need to do so in law, and they may well 'sell on' my information (or have it stolen). As I don't need to tell relevant authorities that I don't need a licence for any other licensable activities that I don't do, I fail to see why TV licencing considers itself different.

The other TV companies don't kick up a fuss about this because the BBC has OFCOM under its control. Any company challenging the bbc for a share of the licence fee or to be excluded runs the risk of losing their own Broadcasting Licence. To give you an example of the bbc's control of OFCOM, the Chairman: Michael Grade, is a former controller of BBC1 and was chairman of the board of governors of the BBC. Vested interest in keeping his bbc pension growing.

I must admit that IF they do ever knock on my door, I shall invite them in for tea & ginger nuts. I lived in a fairly remote Highland cottage for fourteen years & when things went digital, my 'feek & weeble' TV signal disappeared altogether - so I stopped buying their license. Cue the fan mail. First it was their Dundee office through my letterbox, so I phoned them & suggested they come out & find me a signal to pay for . . . it then went very quiet for about three months. The fan mail of course, resumed . . . but no one ever, ever came. During this time I totally lost the telly 'habit' ('Nae choice Jimmy!') & it's stayed with me ever since. Only downside is being carp at pub quizzes -'Who played 'so & so' in 'such & such'? - Aye, right . . . After ten years feeding the recycling bin with their bleating plea's, I moved back to England-land. Within the week 'Hello from the Darlington office'! So far, eight years of fan mail & STILL no visit : )

Maybe many weren’t aware they had to receive pension credit. Those on benefits get help left right and centre . My father’s pension is £50 above the threshold and gets nothing not even free dental cover. Plus he’s on the old state pension which is about £40 per week lower than new pension.

I cancelled my TV tax many years ago. However, I am eligible for a free TV licence, as I am over 75 and claim pension credit. Out of principle, I won't apply for my free TV licence as I still get enormous satisfaction and pleasure from receiving TV licencing threatening letters which go straight into the recycling bin. The BBC have no input to the program but they still expect you to pay. There is no rhyme or reason to it, but all governments allow this extortion even as the programs they broadcast are 98% crap.

Just cancelled my TV licence. Interesting as they are no longer taking online cancellations. You put your TV licence in the box click cancel a pop up box gets you to ring a 0300 number. Loads of questions that are off a script. Do you watch x y z. Do you have player do you have a BT/Sky/VM subscription? Do you watch Netflix. Do you realise Netflix is offering a live service. Boxing match in July. Do you watch Prime Anyway. Cancelled. But doing it online isn’t an option.

They have changed how you check for a licence online now as well...I got a letter in the post saying I might need a licence etc etc, check online now, so I did. Went to the website it gave me, had like 4 questions or something, stuff like "do you watch tv channels as they are broadcast", "do you watch BBC iPlayer" stuff like that, I put no for them all then it said "You Need A TV Licence". I was like "how?? I said no to all their questions?" so I rang them and I was correct I dont need a licence I pretty much watch apps like disney+, youtube, amazon prime and then when I rang I was on hold for almost 40 minutes! But yea their website is either rigged to say you need one no matter what you put in the questions, so you pay online and dont ring them, or its bugged.

If I remember correctly the blind persons' licence discount was even less generous in the past, about a quid off or thereabouts. I have even seen a device for listening to tv sound only, effectively a radio for tv programmes. Not sure if that needed a licence, probably not.

Then your reading. It wrong it doesn't say that it says live TV broadcast, ie any tv channels as broadcast that includes plus one, however streamed is legal, so watching britbox, on itvx or other streaming on there or similar is fine, but watching a regular tv channel and events u need a licence

I have an idea. All of us that know we don't need a licence because we either do not watch TV of any kind but if you do you never watch Live TV or the BBC iPlayer App..... Phone the BBC "I don't require a TV Licence hot line" and tell them. I am not renewing my Vodafone contract and am going with Tesco's Mobile. Or. Considering BBC, sky etc are broadcasters with their own channels and web services, which you normally have to pay for, I'd argue that when they show live broadcasts on yt it is advertising and therefore doesn't require a license

I also noticed that 'news reporter' doesn't double check on news or proof read the article before posting it on the website, after we (members the public) comment on the errors ie spelling mistakes or what they are saying what is happening, then they take it down and Re posted it when they corrected the errors on it. Also I noticed that also (I am not sure this applies to any other local newspapers website), I read The Argus (news for East Sussex/Brighton and Hove*/West Sussex) they posted news about things happening in Manchester for example and not telling people where it was and people are commenting where is this in Sussex *Brighton and Hove is in East Sussex area but they want to difficult for the public making them think it is different county, for example if you travelling east out Brighton and Hove there is sign saying East Sussex (or maybe Welcome to East Sussex)

So you've then declared you never watch tv when you do, making you look like a liar. Very sneaky and underhanded.

I'm confused. First, this article is very clickbaity. Secondly, I thought they abolished free TV licences for the over 75's? And lastly, the article should say, "If you're over 75 and not in receipt of Pension Credit, you are required a TV licence.. IF you want to watch or record live TV and/or use BBC iPlayer. The TV licence as it currently stands is optional, albeit the shitty letters and harassment at the door. But, I've been licence-free for nearly three years and no visits.
