Ive been plastering and stucco since 1964 n still goin at age 69 ...started young ..good videos ...but still i believe in the 4 coat system ...scratch...brown ..float ...hydrate for 21 days ...then finish coat is conventional or acrylic ...if conventional then finish coat is 2 coats 1 trowel ...1 texture ...or brush dash ....if i ts acrylic ..you must rinse brown coat 1st befor primer ..then apply primer on damp walls nice n thick ..let soak in...then when dry ..apply acrylic coat in trowel coat then texture ..so you see its a 4 or 5 coat system .. my family has been doing stucco and plastering in North America since the late 1800s like 1895 and we kind of wrote the book on stucco. We are the Boux"s from liege belgium ....like the old slogan was written ..If its plastering or stucco ..."call the Boux"s... Manitoba..alberta..florida..california .. Missouri..vanc island...quebec..waremme Belgium...

Best video on color coating and stucco in general. Mr. Daher explains the how and why. He is a natural instructor.

Hi Ed, I watched your 3-video series on scratch, brown and color coating stucco, and I want to say thank you for a great educational series. I'm older and am really only doing smaller "handyman" jobs, but this series is excellent, and I'll feel more confident taking on a little larger jobs now. Of particular benefit, was your precise instructions on applying texture. I've managed to get by with texture, and kind of fumbled my way through, but after watching your skilled demonstration, along with the precise information of how, and why, to apply the texture, I feel much better armed to tackle textures. I take pride in my work, and now I feel that the knowledge you've passed on will make me a better craftsman. Thanks Ed.

Thank you for the video? How often do you hydrate the brown coat? Do you spray it once a day for the first seven days? Thank you and keep on the good work!!.
@eddaher568211 ай бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. The need to keep the brown coat hydrated for the 7-14 days would depend on the weather. Cool or cold overcast days may require very little need to hydrate; on the other hand, hot summer days may require saturating of the walls more frequently. A non hydrated brown coat will make for a weak wall and more prone to developing cracks.

@@eddaher5682 Thank you for your response. Therefore, for Ventura County, CA, twice a day should be sufficient during the months of November and December. Thanks again!

I enjoyed very much your instructions and details. thank you much. Im building an ADU here in San Diego. my primary home is Cat Face stucco. if you have any tips for Cat face please let me know. Thanks
@eddaher56825 ай бұрын
Since trying to explain the complete process of a Cat Face finish, I will do my best to give you the basics. A Cat Face stucco finish is done in a two layer process as is the smooth Santa Barbara style of finish. The first layer is the base coat, the second layer is applied in the same manner as when doing a smooth finish with the exception of allowing some of the base coat to be exposed in various areas, which is called “Cat Face.

I had a new window installed (6x4) and need stucco back around it. I got something called stucco base and put some on. I got an 8 lb box of El Rey colored that has sand and and stuff. So, do I just put that El Rey on top of that base coat and that's it?
@eddaher5682 Жыл бұрын
Assuming that all the prep work (Lath, Scratch and Brown coats) were installed to industry standards, I would say yes to your question assuming you have experience installing the final El Rey colored material. If you don’t have the skill level in the application of the El Rey product and think it may end up looking like a patch job I would recommend having a professional stucco contractor, in your area, apply that final coat.

Does the 3rd coat (white coat) also need hydrating?

No, if you try and hydrate the color coat it could alter the color.

In Florida everyone paints their Stucco. Does the new stucco materials doesn’t need to be”breath”?
@eddaher56824 ай бұрын
My video is based on the 3-coat stucco system in California which needs to breathe and should not be painted. I cannot speak for the stucco systems used in Florida.

This is the way a right handed plasterer goes. It is up to the individual which direction they choose.

@ernieforrest7218Ай бұрын
@@eddaher5682 Correct, its a mind over matter thing, if you dont mind it dosent matter. Just get the mud on the wall is what matters. Unless of coarse there are two people working, and especially if one is right handed and the other a lefty. Being a lefty i was always being criticized about it. Mostly because my half was always finished before theirs. lol

I've been a plaster for 46 years and I'm still posturing. We don't do it that way in California. We spread the color with a red float and then texture with the trough never spread the color code with the trout. I guess people do it differently california was the number one place where's the duckle started
