This is a great advice video, not only for post doc applications, but also good as a general job application advice. The main difference is that post doc (in the UK) are made strong if you already got a research fellow grant and so on. A general job interview mostly likely testing out your productivity under pressure and technical skills such as advanced software handling (although science and engineering post doc need to highlight technology skills, too). Make sure the cover letter is thoughtfully written 👌 😀, good luck to all applicants.

The information is very clear - thanks a lot! Tell me something about the process to recruit a postdoc in the US? Interview > then > then.
@gradschooladvice95373 жыл бұрын
In the US it is pretty straightforward. After interviewing a few candidates, the PI will offer the position to their favorite and then that’s it. They will work together to pick a date to start, tropically short after the defense.

This is very similar to applying to a Phd in europe since the Doctorate is usually after the masters and not through a grad school (though that is changing slowly)

Thank you!!! It helped me a lot! I have a question about the English proficiency... Do you know if professors often reject candidates who do not speak English very well?
@gradschooladvice95373 жыл бұрын
I am glad it helped. I do not believe that professors will necessarily reject a candidate that isn’t strong in English. Science is a world-wide study, and the vast majority have English as a second language. I do recommend having your CV and cover letters proofread, especially if English is not your first language.

Justin, thank you very much for sharing your experience and for all the advice. About the three references to be provided while applying via e-mail, is it necessary to include recommendation letters or just their contact info in my CV? I am a foreign researcher (Synthetic Chemistry) who is about to start writing a Ph.D. thesis. I have already decided that I want to switch my research field for a postdoc, and I am currently searching for opportunities in the US and Germany. I do agree it is very important to check how the people get along in the laboratory, expected routine (work hours including weekends), funding time, and how much attention and support you may get from the PI in detrimental to the number of postdocs. One thing that is still unclear for me refers to whether we should consider university ranking as a major criterion or not when being interested in working in laboratories located in different countries. Cheers from Brazil!
@gradschooladvice95373 жыл бұрын
I would say including it in the CV is fine. For a postdoc I would say university status is important. Doing a postdoc at a tier 1 university will help set you up when you want to get your own lab. I would put it fairly high on my list of considerations.

Hi, Justin. Thanks a bunch for this video! Here is one quick question. About the three professional references, should I attach them when inquiring about the postdoc? Or I can send it later when asked? Thank you :)

Thanks for the helpful videos . I have a question: say you’ve accepted a postdoc offer from a tier 3 school, just started your job there but just got another postdoc offer from a tier 1 school which you know will be a more thriving environment for you. What would you do in this situation? Thanks for the advice .
@gradschooladvice95373 жыл бұрын
Sometimes you need to follow your heart. If I truly believed I would succeed at another spot I would go. Your current lab should understand and be happy you have such an opportunity. If not, maybe they weren’t the best environment and it’s good you’re leaving.
