Gel coat can be tricky. You can thin gel coat and you can also spray it. Also if you want to thicken the gel coat mix a little calc powder in. It is easily sandable and if it polyester gel coat mix it a little hot and it will cure faster. Looking good man.

you need to clean the hull with lacer thinner first and after acetone before you apply

Why not two coats of grey primer followed by two top coats of eggshell using a mini roller to avoid streaking and allowing each coat to dry fully before the next. Cheaper than gel coat and gives a fine finish.

I had the gel coat in my inventory so, why not use it? It doesn't matter anyway, this boat sank. I went out with a fisherman with sonar bow and Stern and we saw it three times, but due to the current, we lost it. No worries though, through eBay I have found the bigger brother to this boat. I am currently working on a video which I will make a mold from the hull so that if I ever sink this boat, I can make more.

@@crispyspa Fair enough, that's a good reason - and sorry you lost your boat :/ I used gel coat once and had similar issues; first it bubbled, then after solving that issue by applying a hair dryer it felt tacky and soft, not the hard finish I expected, so have used ordinary paint ever since.

@@andrewjenery1783 you might have been using "no wax" gelcoat. Without the wax making the surface anaerobic, it won't fully cure.

@@crispyspa To be honest I can't remember if it had wax in it or not, I was simply saying that I had similar issues to yourself; hideous finish, bubbling, etc.

@Martin Glad you said this as a GRP v-hull I bought recently is gel coated on the outside, which although not a bad finish isn't ideal. I may use flowcoat this time ;)

Those Bubbles will pop instantly if you just wave a butane lighter across it quickly.. A Plumbers Torch is a little too strong.. A disposable cigarette lighter works like a charm.. A long Butane Gas Grill lighter is even easier..
