Introducing the 2024-25 Education Research Grant winners
Congratulations to Louise David (FHML), Stefan Jongen (FSE), Dietbert Neumann (FHML), Felicitas Biwer (FHML), and Anique de Bruin (FHML) for winning an EDLAB Education Research Grant for their research proposal "Feasibility of applying Generative AI to improve students’ self-study in a Problem-Based Learning environment"!
What is the issue?
During self-study, many students struggle to adopt active learning strategies that promote long-term learning, such as self-testing. One reason for this is the limited availability of practice questions, leading students to focus on less effective strategies.
What will the project do?
This project will explore the feasibility of using generative AI to enable students to create, evaluate, and use AI-generated practice questions effectively during self-study. By reinforcing a student-centred learning approach, it aims to empower students while reducing the workload for educators.
Why is this important?
The project has the potential to significantly enhance long-term learning for UM students through a low-resource strategy that can be easily implemented across courses.
