My secret move to prove that online moderation in a competitive space is never needed and always Bad Oppression is to go onto academic/professional videos about online moderation in competitive spaces and act like a dingus in the comments section, thereby proving that The Gamers are superior beings who must not be moderated. I am convinced that this will work and that making this my entire personality makes me very smart and cool.

13:46 this is exactly the moment where you can't take statistics literally and apply your own context. For example here they try to claim that FF increases if a team is on the losing side, implying as if it's intentional "toxic" behaviour etc. But it could very well be that the team is #1; Not good and the FF is accidental, which results in them being on the losing side because they suck. #2; They're premades and are just having a laugh. This makes me concerned about automated "toxic" behaviour systems, because they are binary in their judgement. This isn't the same as hacking, where someone either hacks or doesn't hack. I think a system implemented to detect and punish players, will be the downfall of a game. And besides that, people can be muted and consequences for intentional TKs can easily be implemented that are both automated and team based. For example in CSGO if you TK at the beginning of a round you get auto kicked, deal too much FF damage and you get auto kicked, get too many TKs and you get auto kicked + a team can vote to kick a player. I know this is a presentation about detecting toxic behaviours and not about fixing them, but the point still stands. Also using reddit as a method for an indicator for a game's health..... bro come on.....

Thank you for this thought-provoking talk. Toxicity is a tough problem to solve, especially by automating the process, since context plays such a huge part and varies from game to game. Glad to see that the statistics of play retention show it is worth the effort. Keep up the good work! :)

They took away custom servers with their respective decorums and now with that newly produced problem it's seen as acceptable to use big brother practices to profile me in... a damn video game

lol, you can still chose to not play these games (and plenty of games kept the old format of decentralized servers just the BIG ones that centralize), and this data is insightful and always has been colected by plenty of servers of even older games - it's just being used this time around for an impactful study :)

this is why competitive games are just cancer, the companies want to be in total control and remove all fun from the game....

For some reason this reminds me of the system they have in China where you get a score based on your behaviour. Given some score, it restricts what you can do in society. It would be a shame if there was a universal score to prevent what games you could or could not play.

Great Presentation! However, one thing that I find hard to evaluate is what 'being toxic' really is. Being toxic is different for everyone. Some people might get offended over a ggwp, others might not even bat an eye if their mother gets insulted. So having no real definition of whats toxic has me concerned about how companies censor this type of freedom of speech to their liking.

Riot has their own measuring of toxicity where they use NLP methods to measure the toxicity levels of a phrase, and if it’s above a threshold, it gets marked as toxic
